I think they appear to be formed by nature, but the location is odd.

In the Komi-Permyak Autonomous Area you can visit the summit of Spasskaya Mountain, where you can get a good view of a group of columnar rocks separated from the cliffs. Not far from this colonnade, at the very base of the mountain, is a small cave in the form of an oven. Inside is a lake with a constant water level. Ice formations remain intact in the cave even on the hottest summer days.

The area is sparsely populated and has a poorly developed transport network. In the northern Urals there are a few reserves - Denezhkin Kamen, Pechoro-Ilychskii and Visherskii.

"I want legs so I can walk to school," she told him. One day she planned to be a doctor. School was important to her.

It was a daunting request. The family was too poor to pay for expensive prostheses. The travel alone to an equipped clinic would be too expensive. Her father is unemployed and ill.

So Falcon, who admits he wasn't sure about the Iraq war, wasn't sure he was making a difference, decided he'd get Shahad her legs.

He went to his commander, to his chaplain, to anyone who would listen. The quest was frustrating and took months of pleas. He threatened to walk away from the Army if he couldn't give Shahad legs.

BAGHDAD — Staff Sgt. Luis Falcon , 38, was patrolling the streets of Baqouba , north of Baghdad , when he saw Shahad Abbas . The 11-year-old girl was in a large decrepit wheelchair, and the stumps of her legs where her calves should have been were crusted with dried blood.

Falcon couldn't just walk on, so he stopped to talk. He came back the next day and the day after that, then every day for six months, bringing her toys, gauze for her legs, a new wheelchair. Anything she asked for he would bring.

In a war that Falcon no longer really understood, Shahad became his mission. So when she asked for legs, that became his mission, too.

On Friday his dream and hers came true, just three weeks before he's scheduled to leave Iraq . Shahad was fitted with prosthetic limbs in a U.S. military-funded clinic in Baghdad that normally provides artificial limbs for wounded members of the Iraqi security forces.

"We created a bond, and I didn't need a translator to interpret the bond we had," Falcon said.

Baby car logos advertising campaign for Minichamps

We’ve seen some great advertising campaigns in the auto industry and we’ve presented you, in the past, some of those. Now here’s another one, from Brazil, which is really awesome and I bet your first reaction will be “Awww, that’s so cute!”.

The prints, which show “baby versions” of some popular brand logos, like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati or Jaguar were created by Brazilian ad agency Dentsu for Minichamps, a die-cast miniature model producer. And we must say they’re pretty funny, especially the Jaguar kitten, the Ferrari horsey or the Lamborghini calf.

Endangered parrots born in captivity reproduce in wild

Endangered scarlet macaws born in captivity are reproducing in the wild for the first time on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast.

The ZooAve Center for the Rescue of Endangered Species has released 100 of the birds into the wild in the past decade. But biologists didn't spot offspring until last year,

Since then, they have recorded 22 chicks born in the wild, and four more scarlet macaw couples have laid eggs

The parrots once occupied all of Costa Rica. But hunting and poaching dramatically cut their population, and they are now found only in two national parks along the coast.

The parrots, which live up to 80 years, can start reproducing at age 7.

Many parrots in the breeding program were confiscated by environmental authorities or turned in by their former owners. Some can't leave the sanctuary because they don't know how to survive in the wild.

"Many don't even know how to feed themselves," Fournier said.

We're familiar with the close-up images of Earth captured by orbital satellites and astronauts on the International Space Station. But here are a few pictures of the Earth and Moon captured at a distance, while passing around the Moon, or orbiting distant Saturn. In the words of Carl Sagan, "Look again at that dot. That's here. Holocaust Memorial Train Ends Journey at Auschwitz

A memorial train featuring an exhibition on the thousands of children deported and murdered by the Nazis during World War II completed its journey near the former Auschwitz death camp in southern Poland.

Some 200 people marched on Thursday from the railway station in Oswiecim, where the train arrived, to a platform at the nearby Auschwitz camp, where more than 1.1 million people, including one million European Jews, were killed there between 1941-45.

The train's arrival at Auschwitz coincided with the 63rd anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe on May 8, 1945.

Symbolic journey

Organizers said that more than 225,000 people viewed the exhibition during its six-month voyage.

Three small-town eighth-graders in Minnesota were suspended by their principal for not standing Thursday morning for the Pledge of Allegiance, violating a district policy that the principal now says may soon be reworded to protect free speech rights.

"My son wasn't being defiant against America," said Kim Dahl, mother of one of the students, Brandt, who attends Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Junior High School in northwestern Minnesota.

Brandt told the Forum newspaper in Fargo that Thursday's one-day in-school suspension, "was kind of dumb because I didn't do anything wrong. It should be the people's choice."

Kim Dahl said the "punishment didn't fit the crime. If they wanted to know why he didn't stand, they should've made him write a paper." She said her son has been declining to stand all school year, offered no reason for sitting and was not obligated to explain his actions.

The school's handbook says all students are required to stand but are not required to recite the pledge.

Court backs artist over naked goddess

Criminal charges levelled against India's leading living artist for an allegedly obscene depiction of a Hindu goddess have been quashed in a ruling that says religious extremism risks pushing the country into a "pre-Renaissance era".

Maqbool Fida Husain, 92, a Muslim who has been dubbed "the Picasso of India", was served with seven private criminal complaints by Hindu groups for the painting Bharat Mata (Mother India), a work representing the nation as a nude woman. The Delhi High Court judged that the picture, for which Mr Husain has apologised, carried no religious content and could not be construed as offensive.

Akhil Sibal, Mr Husain's lawyer, told The Times that the ruling was an important step, "ensuring artistic freedoms are not made victims at the hands of extremists".

Once shunned by academics, Wikipedia now a teaching tool

Wikipedia, the upstart Internet encyclopedia that most universities forbid students to use, has suddenly become a teaching tool for professors.

Recently, university teachers have swapped student term papers for assignments to write entries for the free online encyclopedia.

"The vast majority of Wikipedia entries aren't very good," said Beasley-Murray, but said the site aims to be academically sound.

To reach its goal of academic standards, said Wikipedia's web site, it set up an assessment scale on its English-language site. The best encyclopedia entries are ranked as "Featured Articles," and run each day on the home page at http://www.wikipedia.com.

Of more than 10 million articles in 253 languages, only about 2,000 have reached "Featured Article" status, it said.

In May, three entries created by nine students in the course became the first student works to reach Wikipedia's top rank.

Research on the internet showed that the temple not only takes in orphaned cubs found by villagers or rescued from poachers at border control, it has now become a conservation project with a breeding programme. Several cubs have been born at the temple and there are plans for future generations to be returned to the wild - although donations are needed to fund this project.

However, the research also revealed allegations that the tigers are drugged, have teeth and claws removed, are vegetarian and spend all of their time in cages that are too small. (Before you continue reading, you should know that all of these allegations proved to be completely unfounded and are obviously uninformed. Teeth and claws not removed and firmly in evidence, not vegetarian, caged some of the time in large spotless cages and absolutely NOT drugged.)
