They then demonstrated that blocking the same molecular mechanism that controls synaptic plasticity also prevented visual recognition memory in rats. This shows that such memory relies on specific molecular processes in the brain.

Tags: brain, memory, learning, neurology

<clipSource>http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/04/080423121427.htm</clipSource>

Is Mathematics Discovered or Invented?

clipped by: wildcat

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

For centuries people have debated whether – like scientific truths – mathematics is discoverable, or if it is simply invented by the minds of our great mathematicians. But two questions are raised, one for each side of the coin. For those who believe these mathematical truths are purely discoverable, where, exactly, are you looking? And for those on the other side of the court, why cannot a mathematician simply announce to the world that he has invented 2 + 2 to equal 5.

your cup of tea. The Classical Greek philosopher Plato was of the view
that math was discoverable, and that it is what underlies the very
structure of our universe.

“The abstract realm in which a mathematician works is by dint of

Some of the most sensational cases ever to be tried in Britain are detailed, including that of Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen, who killed his wife and set up with his lover before fleeing to Canada.

Also detailed is Oscar Wilde's conviction for indecency, which saw the writer jailed

Tags: old bailey trials, history

<clipSource>http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7365879.stm</clipSource>

Pyramids packed with fossil shells.

clipped by: pokkets
clipper's remarks: They say that seashells prove that the rock was quarried, instead of cast in moulds. I can't imagine how making their own 10 tonne bricks in moulds would have made things any easier. Maybe just adding another stage to a process that was already a huge undertaking.
I also heard once that after something is build it hasto 'settle' into into it's foundations, Very few builders or architects have been able to find a way to overcome this, but with their weight, and perfect seams with no mortar, the pyramids have only settled a fraction - perhaps a few inches, over thousands of years.
Something that seems much more likely with solid rock than bricks.
If only the library in Alexandria hadn't burned down with all of the blueprints.

Clip Source: www.abc.net.au

Jennifer Viegas

Many of Egypt's most famous monuments, such as the Sphinx and Cheops pyramid at Giza, contain hundreds of thousands of marine fossils, according to a new study.

Were Egypt's great ancient monuments carved from stone or cast like concrete? That crispy, chewy, salty and sinful cut of pork we all love.

Bacon has disciples far and wide, some of whom devote entire blogs to it.

For those who’ve spent more time eating it than studying it, bacon is cut
from the sides, belly, or back of a pig, near the ribs. It’s the fattiness of
the meat that makes it so yummy. After the skin is cut away, the meat is cured,
smoked, and sliced. It can be cooked in a pan on the stovetop, in the oven, or in
the microwave, until it’s perfectly crisp.

1. Make a good old BLT sandwich, of
     course.

     2. Bacon cheeseburgers will make anyone’s mouth water. Meat topped with
     more meat? Perfection!

     3. Bacon-wrapped tater tots would go perfectly with that
     bacon cheeseburger!

     4. Roast a bacon-wrapped
     turkey for Sunday dinner.

     5. Make delicious bacon pastry slices.

     12. It’s not real, southern cornbread unless there’s bacon grease
     in it.

     15. The beautiful city of Charleston,
South Carolina gives us bacon-flavored cotton candy.

Tags: bacon

<clipSource>http://startcooking.com/blog/395/50-Ways-to-Use-Bacon</clipSource>

Small city vacation destinations

clipped by: Aribeth

Clip Source: blog.ratestogo.com

Explanation: The Tarantula Nebula is more than 1,000 light-years in diameter -- a giant star forming region within our neighboring galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). That cosmic arachnid lies at the upper left of this expansive mosiac covering a part of the LMC over 6,000 light-years across. Within the Tarantula (NGC 2070), intense radiation, stellar winds and supernova shocks from the central young cluster of massive stars, cataloged as R136, energize the nebular glow and shape the spidery filaments. Around the Tarantula are other violent star-forming regions with young star clusters, filaments and bubble-shaped clouds. The small but expanding remnant of supernova 1987a, the closest supernova in modern history, is located near the center of the view. The rich field is about as wide as four full moons on the sky, located in the southern constellation Dorado.

Tags: space, the tarantula nebula, picture, hd, wallpaper

<clipSource>http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0804/Tarantulamosaic_gendler.jpg</clipSource>

Brain patterns predict mistakes

clipped by: wildcat

Clip Source: www.cosmosmagazine.com

CHICAGO: It turns out that dull tasks really do numb the brain. Researchers have discovered that as people perform monotonous tasks, their brain shifts towards an at-rest mode whether they like it or not.

And by monitoring that area of the brain, they were able to predict when someone was about to make a mistake before they made it, a study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found.

"There's this thing that's probably intrinsic where your brain says I do need to take a little break here and there's nothing you can do about it," said study author Tom Eichele of Norway's University of Bergen.

"Probably everyone knows that feeling that sometimes your brain is not as receptive or as well performing and you didn't do anything to actually induce that," he said.

Tags: brain, patterns, mistakes, monotony

<clipSource>http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/node/1950</clipSource>

Epigenetic research uncovers new targets for modification enzymes

clipped by: Silkweaver

Clip Source: www.physorg.com

Enzymes regulating genetic expression can be just as important as the genome itself, increasing evidence shows. The expanding field of epigenetics focuses on the multiple influences on DNA and surrounding molecules that determine whether genes are turned on or off during development and disease processes.

"This discovery broadens our view of methyltransferases and tells us that epigenetic regulation in cells is even more complicated than we thought," says principal investigator Xiaodong Cheng, PhD, professor of biochemistry at Emory University School of Medicine and a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar.

We have known for some time that we had a great deal more to discover about methyltransferases. This is an important piece of the puzzle, and additional research will continue to help us unwind the multiple mechanisms involved in epigenetic gene regulation."

When are you allowed to feel that you are enough?

Self improvement can be a similar striving trap: "I just need to read one more book, attend one more seminar, learn one more technique and then I'll be ... enough? For what?"

I found this feeling of striving manifested in my body with shin splints. That painful feeling in the front of your shins that makes it very painful to run and even walk. My brain wanted to go faster, to be somewhere ahead of me now, but my body wouldn't cooperate.

Here's how to apply EFT to the causes of striving.

Tags: striving, want more, be more, self improvement, eft, tap4health

<clipSource>http://www.tap4health.com/news-archive/2008/striving-eft.html</clipSource>

Erotic Nature

clipped by: dakotayii
clipper's remarks: OK, here's help: look at the space between her right arm and her head, the tail is on her neck, follow it up. Look at her left hip, follow the shaded part down, it's another one, and on his shoulder..

Clip Source: www.123opticalillusions.com

You saw a couple in an intimate love position, right?

Interestingly, research has shown that young children cannot identify the intimate couple because they do not have prior memory associated with such a scenario.

What they will see, however, is nine (small & black) dolphins in the picture!

So, I guess we've already proven you're not a young innocent child. Now, if it's hard for you to find the dolphins within 6 seconds, your mind is SO corrupted that you probably need help!

Tags: fun

<clipSource>http://www.123opticalillusions.com/pages/double-image-illusion.php</clipSource>
