Waxy.org has a link to a February 27, 1995 Newsweek article stating that this whole Internet thing is a bunch of hype. Author Clifford Stoll proclaims, "no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works." We're promised instant catalog shopping--just point and click for great deals. We'll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet--which there isn't--the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople.

Diabetic girl dies as parents pray instead of calling for medical aid

An 11-year-old girl died from diabetes after her parents prayed for her recovery rather than calling for medical assistance.

Madeline Neumann died on Sunday in Wisconsin, from an undiagnosed but treatable ailment.

Dan Vergin, the local police chief, said she had been ill for a month, suffering symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

"She just got sicker and sicker until she was dead," he said.

Police are now preparing a report for prosecutors. However, legal action against the parents may be prevented by a Wisconsin state statute against failing to act to protect children from bodily harm.

The statute contains an exemption for what it refers to as "treatment through prayer". Mrs Neumann, whose husband is a former policeman, said they had never expected her daughter to die. She suffered from diabetic ketoacidosis, which left her with too little insulin.

Julio Diaz, a social worker, was robbed at knifepoint by a teenaged mugger in the Bronx. Instead of getting angry or scared, he offered the kid his coat, and struck up a friendship:

As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm."
The would-be robber looked at his would-be victim, "like what's going on here?" Diaz says. "He asked me, 'Why are you doing this?'"
Diaz replied: "If you're willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money. I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me ... hey, you're more than welcome.

Armenia is one of the oldest countries on Earth, its rich history apparent at every turn, from the capital city of Yerevan to the outskirts of the nation. It survived the Roman Empire, Alexander the Great, the Armenian Genocide in 1915 and dozens of other attempts at conquest - remaining largely independent throughout its history.

Armenia was also among the first post-Soviet countries to readily embrace capitalism, which served to improve somewhat the standard of living, but brought with it a score of other problems. However, regardless of (presently improving) economic situation, the point of this article is to remind the reader (and maybe the future visitor) about the incredible natural and cultural wonders of this country.

British youth are violent, drunken and out of control, a leading American magazine concludes today.

The front cover of renowned publication Time Magazine depicts a young man in a "hoodie" with mugshots of others across a Union Jack.

Its headline reads: "Unhappy, Unloved and Out of Control - An epidemic of violence, crime and drunkenness has made Britain scared of its young."

It also pours scorn upon the parenting abilities of the British, claiming they do not spend enough time with their children and cannot cope.

The magazine criticises our class-riven society, education system and binge-drinking culture.

"The boys and girls who casually pick fights, have sex and keep the emergency services fully occupied are often fuelled by cheap booze."

The article expresses particular concern at Britain's binge-drinking culture.

"Alcohol Concern noted that one in three British men and one in five women drink double the amount considered safe at least once a week," it says,

Cat Flight A Possibility?

clipper's remarks: A study at Bristol’s rest of England University has taken the possibility of cat flying from the realms of Galileo’s used tissue to a real possibility and the clearly excited research team at URE have been running up and down the corridors, stamping, shouting and pointing up at the clear blue sky. “It’s a real breakthrough.” said professor Glynn Martin who has been leading the team since May 2007.

Professor Martin went on to show slides(see diagram above) demonstrating velocity, arc, wind speed and the now much talked about ‘rolling patterns’ which appear to be part of the new science which has helped this project leap so gracefully forward. It seems that if a feline subject is ‘rolled’ soon after launching it can achieve a trajectory far in excess of that previously obtained when no rolling has been used.

Cat Flight A Possibility

After years of hard work British Scientists have finally found a workable solution to the problem of cat flight.

Since just before Roman times people have been trying to find ways of launching cats high into the air and often allowed themselves to dream of the day when an unmanned cat may even land on the moon.

"Galileo had plans to mount a telescope near the back of a cat so that he could prove his ideas about the shape of the world."

Surprisingly Leonardo da Vinci was not at all interested in cat flight and did not sketch a number of ‘cat flying vessels’ in his journals and numerous notebooks. In one sepia-toned page a detailed diagram of a ‘floating cat harness’ and propeller attachment with dimensions and copious notes is noticeably absent.

In 1852 The Royal Society proclaimed that Feline Flight was impossible and

‘an [unmanned] cat would never get higher than a tall building or longish pole’.

THE runner’s high: Every athlete has heard of it, most seem to believe in it and many say they have experienced it. But for years scientists have reserved judgment because no rigorous test confirmed its existence.

Yes, some people reported that they felt so good when they exercised that it was as if they had taken mood-altering drugs. But was that feeling real or just a delusion? And even if it was real, what was the feeling supposed to be, and what caused it?

But now medical technology has caught up with exercise lore. Researchers in Germany, using advances in neuroscience, report in the current issue of the journal Cerebral Cortex that the folk belief is true: Running does elicit a flood of endorphins in the brain. The endorphins are associated with mood changes, and the more endorphins a runner’s body pumps out, the greater the effect.

Prudhomme was setting up his cooking tent on the golf range at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans yesterday, where the PGA tour begins tomorrow, when he felt a sting in his right arm, just above his elbow

The cook shook his shirt sleeve and a .22 calibre bullet fell to the ground

probably shot from somewhere within a mile-and-a-half radius of the golf course

The chef rose to prominence after being named the first American-born executive chef of noted New Orleans restaurant Commander's Palace in 1975

He was at the course to cook for players, their caddies and guests at the annual US golf professionals tournament

the bullet cut Prudhomme's skin on his arm and put a hole in his white chef's coat. But he continued with his cooking
