As the wingnut chorus predictably disses Obama's eloquent speech, it's important to remember how completely ridiculous and manufactured this whole Wright "controversy" is:

Neither Jerry Falwell nor Pat Robertson ever retracted or denounced their view that America provoked the 9/11 attacks by doing things to anger God.

Well, yeah. Duh.

The Republican Party has tied itself at the hip to a whole slew of "anti-American extremists" -- people who believe that the U.S. provoked the 9/11 attacks because God wants to punish us for the evil, wicked nation we've become -- and yet there is virtual silence about these associations.

Once again, it's important to keep making the point that when you've built an entire political movement on the backs of a crazy mob of Dixiecrat Savonarolas who make outrageous hateful comments pretty much every day, you've sort of opted-out of your ability to throw stones.

Screaming sports coaches and cutthroat tycoons have it wrong: Nice guys do finish first, a new study suggests.

The Harvard University study involved 100 Boston-area college students playing the same game over and over — a punishment-heavy version of the classic one-on-one brinksmanship game of prisoner's dilemma. The research appears in Thursday's edition of the journal Nature.

Common game theory has held that punishment makes two equals cooperate. But when people compete in repeated games, punishment fails to deliver, said study author Martin Nowak. He is director of the evolutionary dynamics lab at Harvard where the study was conducted.

"On the individual level, we find that those who use punishments are the losers," Nowak said his experiments found.

Those who escalate the conflict very often wound up doomed.

"It's a very positive message," said study

"In general, the thing that is most, sort of, rational and best for your own self-interest is to be nice."

I’m sitting across the table from death. Once again he and I are staring into each others eyes over cups of coffee. Decaf for him he had a good nights sleep.

He brought up my own mortality this time and that was where the conversation ended and now we are at an impasse. It is in my measured breathing where the conversation is taking place. He watches looking for any sign of weakness. He’s seen me break before and he knows that I’m one memory away.

I look around and I don’t think that anyone else sees him here with me. He’s my invisible date and he likes it that way.

His appearance at my mother’s bedside was a blessing that I had prayed for. He took too long that time and the suffering seemed endless. Last night he showed up where he wasn’t invited.

He mocks me with his smile.

The gold standard for limb regeneration is the salamander, which can grow perfect replacements for lost body parts throughout its lifetime. Understanding how can provide a road map for human limb regeneration.

The early responses of tissues at an amputation site are not that different in salamanders and in humans, but eventually human tissues form a scar, whereas the salamander’s reactivate an embryonic development program to build a new limb.

Learning to control the human wound environment to trigger salamanderlike healing could make it possible to regenerate large body parts.

His far-sightedness led him to write dozens of science fiction novels, of which perhaps the most famous is 2001: A Space Odyssey — made into a spectacular film by the late director Stanley Kubrick.

Clarke and Kubrick created a vision of outer space that was more than just technology but had a mythic quality that probed the philosophy of the universe.

The original story was a short novella dealing with the idea of Man’s evolution being inspired by the intervention of a distant god-like extra-terrestrial civilisation.

To the end of his life he never lost his sense of wonder, his sense of humour or his strong Somerset accent. While sorely disappointed with the failure of Man’s space flight to achieve the lofty goals that he had foreseen, he always retained an optimism about the Universe and Man’s place in it.

And three days earlier, Vice President Cheney, speaking of Saddam, said, "He had long established ties with al Qaeda."

Last week, the Pentagon completed a study that found that there was no cooperation between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda.

For those who, like Bill O'Reilly, who ask for proof that the President had lied, now have it. From his own mouth.

For the first four years, he was LYING.

If the President is not lying now and my math is right, that means he lied for 80% of the war.

But even if he is telling the truth now, it's a truth that is nauseatingly offensive.

Mr. President...Are you saying your wholesale mismanagement of this war makes all the lives and treasures lost still "necessary"?

Alpha Centauri may have 'Earth-like' worlds

Simulations of the Alpha Centauri system pointed to planets existing, and they may be more earth-like if they are in a zone around the stars where liquid water can exist. The idea is to compare around 90,000 observations over the next five years, enough so that the 'wobble of a smaller planet can be detected.

Whatever the initial conditions, the simulations all led to the formation of different planetary systems.
