ANKARA, Turkey - Lawmakers voted early Thursday to approve a constitutional amendment allowing female students to enter universities wearing Islamic head scarves — a move some Turks see as a threat to the traditional separation of church and state.

The head scarf issue is a source of tension in Turkey and has divided the population among those who consider the ban an affront to the religious freedoms of pious Muslims and those who fear removing the ban would erode Turkey's secular education system.

Secularists regard the head covering as a political statement and argue it has no place in schools. They also fear that lifting the ban at universities would pressure all female students to cover themselves up.

On Wednesday, about 200 people gathered near the parliament building to protest the government's proposal as lawmakers convened. The will of God prevails. In great contests each party claims to act in accordance with
the will of God. Both may be, and one must be, wrong. God cannot be
for and against the same thing at the same time. In the present civil war it is
quite possible that God's purpose is something different from the purpose of either party -- and
yet the human instrumentalities, working just as they do, are of the best adaptation to effect His
purpose. I am almost ready to say that this is probably true -- that God wills this contest,
and wills that it shall not end yet. By his mere great power, on the minds of the now
contestants, He could have either saved or destroyed the Union without a human
contest. Yet the contest began. And, having begun He could give the final victory
to either side any day. Yet the contest proceeds.

Tags: religion, christianity, history, america, primary_source, post:facebook(clip)

<clipSource>http://showcase.netins.net/web/creative/lincoln/speeches/handbill.htm</clipSource>

Embryos created with DNA from 3 people

clipped by: invictus
clipper's remarks: Babies with 3 parents...

Clip Source: news.yahoo.com

LONDON - British scientists say they have created human embryos containing DNA from two women and a man in a procedure that researchers hope might be used one day to produce embryos free of inherited diseases.

You can find out more about Halsman here : www.temple.edu/photo/photographers/halsman/phbio.html and i fully reccomend looking at some more of his work - his collaborations with Salvador Dali were some of the most innovative work around.

And something to note - you could do this in photoshop now easily but Halsman did not - this was shot live. It took 26 tries to get it over five hours - Halsman counted to four, Dali leapt, 3 assistants threw the cats, one threw the water from a bucket and Halsman's wife held the chair. Its all done in the camera.

Tags: salvador, dali, philippe, halsman, photography, art, photograph

<clipSource>http://www.flickr.com/photos/monkeyc/95165918/</clipSource>

LIFE: A GENE-CENTRIC VIEW

clipped by: wildcat

Clip Source: www.edge.org

Craig Venter & Richard
