Police: 14-Year-Old Raped On School Bus

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Murfreesboro police said a high school senior raped a younger student on a school bus.

Police said the 14-year-old girl, a Riverdale High School freshman, was assaulted as she rode home last Wednesday.

Detectives said 18-year-old Brandon Stover sat next to the girl, forced her up against the window before he fondled and raped her.

Bond said there were about 60 students on board at the time and he didn't notice an assault happening.

Police said the incident was recorded on the bus surveillance camera.

The video, which was not released to the media, shows the girl fighting back and screaming for help.

He was charged with sexual battery and rape. He is free on $19,000 bond. He was expelled.

"I'm trying to drive this bus, to get the kids home safe and the traffic in Rutherford County," said Joe Bond, who drives school bus No. 187. "And I glance back to make sure nobody's standing up, jumping around or having a fight."

THE chief torturer under the Khmer Rouge "Killing Fields" regime wept and prayed today as he led the judges who will try him for crimes against humanity around the mass graves for some of its victims.

Duch, also known as Kaing Guek Eav, accompanied 80 judges, lawyers and other officials of a UN-backed tribunal to the 129 graves, uncovered after a Vietnamese invasion sent the Khmer Rouge back to the jungles in 1979.

"I saw Duch kneel in front of the trees where Khmer Rouge soldiers smashed children to death," a policeman said after the four-hour tour.

"He cried and apologised to the victims" in the former ricefields outside Phnom Penh, he said.

Stacks of excavated skulls mark the area.

Detained in 1999 and now a Christian, Duch is expected to be a key witness in the trials of "Brother Number Two" Nuon Chea, Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot's right hand man, Khieu Samphan, president under the regime, Ieng Sary, its foreign minister, and his wife.

The defendants face a maximum of life in prison.

South Africa to Start Killing Elephants Again

PRETORIA, South Africa — South Africa announced Monday that it was reversing a 1995 ban on killing elephants to help control their booming population, drawing instant outrage from animal-rights activists.

Environment Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk did not say how many elephants could be killed, saying only that some animal-rights groups' estimates of 2,000 to 10,000 were "hugely inflated."

The Johannesburg-based group Animal Rights Africa threatened to call for international tourist boycotts and protests and to take legal action.

South Africa's elephant population has ballooned to more than 20,000 from 8,000 in 1995, when international pressure led to a ban on killing them.

Van Schalkwyk also announced that the government is prohibiting the capture of wild elephants for commercial purposes — a move likely to draw fire from a fast-growing industry in elephant-back safaris.

"I cannot believe what is happening on the plane," he said, sobbing. "She cannot get up, and nothing on the plane works."

American Airlines passenger dies in flight

An American Airlines passenger died after a flight attendant told her he couldn't give her any oxygen and then tried to help her with faulty equipment, including an empty oxygen tank, a relative said.

The airline confirmed the flight death and said medical professionals had tried to save the passenger, Carine Desir, who was returning home to New York from Haiti.

Desir had complained of not feeling well and being very thirsty
