clipper's remarks: The beauty of running are the things you pass by as you run along. You get to see things that you don’t notice as you drive by in a car. You may have run the same route 50 times but you find yourself seeing something different each time. I ran by a tree than had grown over a fence and it got me to thinking, there are probably some cool picture of things “swallowed” by trees.

Most policeman keep track of how long you’ve been parked in a spot by marking the tires with white chalk.

This may be the only instance ever where they can measure the time by counting rings in a tree.

This must be what people are looking for when they are looking for a money tree.

Instead of the normal throwing a penny into a fountain and making a wish, people hammer a penny into this log.

This proves that anything against a tree for a long period of time will be eaten by it.

This wash basin was merely leaning against the tree and with time, the tree has grabbed it and lifted it up.

Intelligent People Are Prone to Alcoholism

The higher your IQ coefficient is, the more drinks you take daily. These are the results of a research made by the Medical Research Council and published in the "American Journal of Public Health," which points that women are particularly prone to drink heavily in their thirties, if they have an over-the-average intelligence.

It seems that being smart enough to know the bad effects

of alcohol is not enough and the stressful jobs of high-skilled professionals push them to the alcohol relief. This is especially true if women attempt to ascend in male-dominated professions.

It appeared that the men and women who scored higher for childhood mental ability tests displayed higher rates of problem drinking in adulthood, and the likelihood of drink issue was increased for intelligent women compared to men.

Overall 47% of men and 22% of women had drinking issues, consuming over the recommended upper limits of 21 units weekly for men and 14 units weekly for women,

clipper's remarks: Mary Jane Grant was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1805. Her father was a Scottish soldier, and her mother a Jamaican. Mary learned her nursing skills from her mother, who kept a boarding house for invalid soldiers. Although technically 'free', being of mixed race, Mary and her family had few civil rights - they could not vote, hold public office or enter the professions. In 1836, Mary married Edwin Seacole but the marriage was short-lived as he died in 1844.

Seacole was taught herbal remedies and folk medicine by her mother

of a nomadic disposition, on hearing of the terrible conditions of the Crimean War and certain that her knowledge of tropical medicine would be of use, she travelled to London and volunteered as a nurse

Although an expert at dealing with cholera, her application to join Florence Nightingale's team was rejected

She then borrowed money to make the 4,000 mile journey alone

she distinguished herself, treating the wounded on the battlefield, on many occasions treating wounded soldiers from both sides while under fire

Following the cessation of hostilities in 1856 she found herself stranded and almost destitute, and was saved from penury by the Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces

Today she is noted not only for her bravery and medical skills but as "a woman who succeeded despite the racial prejudice of influential sections of Victorian society"

Men and women are different in every system of the body, and nowhere is this more true than in the brain

Because of a higher rate of blood flow to certain parts of the brain (including those that control language) as well as higher concentrations of estrogen, women's memories have been shown to be superior to men's in a couple of key areas:

The spoken word.

This includes stories read aloud from books, as well as verbal arguments

These things become more firmly fixed in women's memories, are better "packaged" and can be recalled more easily later, again thanks to enhanced blood flow to the brain.

Unpleasant, frightening or stressful experiences.

Estrogen activates a larger field of neurons in women's brains during an upsetting experience

so they experience the stress in greater and more precise detail.

Exotic sex lives of oysters revealed

In keeping with their supposed aphrodisiac properties, a study has revealed that oysters have exotic sex lives, with females and males producing thousands of types of eggs and sperm.

Each oyster spends the start of its life as a male, when it releases vast numbers of sperm that compete to fertilise the 100 million eggs that each of the older, female oysters produce annually.

They are different from many species that have diverse ornamentations and behaviours that help males show off and females choose a suitable mate. This diversity results from an evolutionary 'battle of the sexes'

Pacific oysters have an extraordinarily diverse range of proteins on the surfaces of their sperm and eggs and "these proteins take the place of the behavioural mechanisms that act in other organisms

Instead of simply accepting the first sperm to arrive, oyster eggs constantly evolve to all be slightly different, which cuts the proportion of sperm that are compatible with a given egg
