Be willing to publicly acknowledge and question one’s own assumptions and biases.

Be willing to publicly acknowledge where your argument is weak.

Be willing to publicly acknowledge when you are wrong.

Demonstrate consistency.

Address the argument instead of attacking the person making the argument.

When addressing an argument, do not misrepresent it.

Show a commitment to critical thinking.

Be willing to publicly acknowledge when a point or criticism is good.

There is a lot of commercial emphasis on the safety of vehicle designs, but did you know that 25% of auto accidents involve pedestrians? While the purpose of these crossings is to assist people (or in some cases animals) wishing to cross a road, their utilitarianism hasn’t not stopped people from creative experimentation in the form of quite literal pedestrian street art.

The most famous of these works come, unsurprisingly, from Peter Gibson, often referred to as Canada’s answer to Britain’s Banksy. Gibson’s stencils are a direct response to the proliferation of ‘car culture‘ and though have gotten him into trouble with the law (he was arrested and charged with 53 counts of mischief) have gotten almost universal praise from the public for questioning the impact of our dependency on automobiles on society. Ironically enough, all charges were dropped against Gibson, instead he was asked to participate in 40 hours of community service focusing on street art.

Unloved as they are, cockroaches do a lot of scurrying around in response to threats, human or otherwise.

While these movements aren’t random, they aren’t entirely predictable either, researchers say in a study in Current Biology.

Cockroaches choose from one of several preferred trajectories when running from a predator, and that variability is enough to confound their attackers most of the time.

Paolo Domenici of the Methodological Chemistry Institute of the National Research Council of Italy and colleagues measured how the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) responded to a threat stimulus.

The researchers say they have no idea what goes on in the roach nervous system to produce these preferred routes.

through further experimentation it might be possible to develop a general theory of how animals maintain a certain level of unpredictability.

And by the way, you might want to keep the 90-120-150-180 finding in mind the next time you go after a cockroach in the kitchen.
