Tonight is the full moon, and according to several scientific studies that means you're far more likely to be the victim of a crime or creamed in an accident. I'd always assumed it was an urban legend that the full moon coincided with a rise in human weirdness. But some scientists believe there is factual evidence (see chart) that human behavior takes a swerve for the worse during these werewolfish days

Celeb psychiatrist Glenn Wilson suggested people's behavior might change at the full moon, but not due to any sort of "human tidal wave" shenanigans:

There is good reason to believe that people's personalities do change around the time of the full moon, not because of any astronomical force, but because it creates the optimum lighting conditions for feeling carefree and mischievous

But psychologist Ivan Kelly

says the whole idea is bunk

nothing but shoddy research as well as a tendency to confuse correlation and causation

Election spurs 'hundreds' of race threats, crimes

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

Grant Griffin, a 46-year-old white Georgia native, expressed similar sentiments: "I believe our nation is ruined and has been for several decades and the election of Obama is merely the culmination of the change.

In a time when the nation calls out for cool leadership and rational discussion, Limbaugh stirs the caldron, a tendency he proved in a particularly grotesque way last week when he accused Obama’s party of plotting a government takeover of 401(k) retirement plans.

“They’re going to take your 401(k), put it in the Social Security trust fund, whatever the hell that is,” Limbaugh woofed. “Trust fund, my rear end.”

A slight problem with Limbaugh’s report: Obama and the Democrats have proposed no such thing.

The proposal, in fact, emanated from a single economist, one of many experts testifying to a congressional committee.

Rainey concludes, “To broadcast such a report — so drained of context as to constitute a lie — would be a shameless act at any time. But Limbaugh needlessly stirred the fears of the millions he holds in his thrall — making the 401(k) thievery sound like nearly a done deal. Shameless.”

The faces were either happy or sad, male or female, and described as being in either a high- or low-paying job.

Mr. Wilson found men who scored high on a psychopathic personality questionnaire (a series of 187 questions probing emotional reactions and impulsivity) possessed the unusual ability to recall sad females in low-paying jobs. At the same time, they also had an unusual inability to recall females who were happy or in high-paying jobs, nor were they good at putting names to faces.

“What we concluded is that psychopathy is associated with a kind of ‘predatory memory,’” says Mr. Wilson, 22, from Moncton, N.B. “They may use this to actively select their victims.”

He’s interested in doing further research with diagnosed offenders in the criminal population.

“It’s like what you’d see on Animal Planet—the lion goes after the most vulnerable, the one they have the best chance of getting,” says Kevin Wilson, a fourth-year science student who was the lead researcher on the paper, “A pawn by any other name? Social information processing as a function of psychopathic traits,” published in the Journal of Research in Personality.

“This type of aggression is referred to as predatory … it’s a perceptual system geared to getting the easiest prey.”
