The Pakistan Senate has reportedly condemned the alleged ’honour killing’ of a girl in Sindh by her father-in-law, who charged that the child was illegitimate.

In the horrifying incident, the 17-year-old Taslim Solangi, who was eight-months pregnant was thrown to dogs by her father-in-law and gave birth to her baby prematurely.

Condemning incident, Senator Semeen Siddiqui demanded an inquiry into the incident.

The baby born prematurely was thrown into the nearby Ubhal Wah canal by the killer father-in-law.

Meanwhile, reports also suggest hit men had been dispatched to Karachi to kill the absconding mother of Taslim who had fled the village.

In Islamabad, President Asif Ali Zardari reacted sharply to the report of killing of the girl and asked lady MNA Nafeesa Shah to investigate the shocking event and submit him a report.

Though the ability to make fires is considered one of the great breakthroughs in human civilization, it may have been a more primitive activity than we thought.

A new archaeological study has revealed that homo sapiens' ancestors were regularly making fires about 790 thousand years ago. Even by the most conservative estimates, that's least 590 thousand years before our species developed language.

An ancient lakeside community by the river Jordan in Israel revealed that proto-humans passed along the secret of creating fire from generation to generation.

Israeli archaeologist Nira Alperson-Afil and her team investigated an area where the lake had risen and fallen back a number of times, preserving the ancient hominid camp areas in layers of sediment.

After digging down through twelve different layers, they found that camp after camp contained discarded flints that were charred by fire.

This strongly suggests that they were using the flints to build fires

Waste is unavoidable—a sad fact of life quantified by the famous second law of thermodynamics. But if the world is steadily becoming more disordered, how do you explain the self-organization that often occurs in nature? At root, the trouble is that classical thermodynamics assumes systems are in equilibrium, a placid condition seldom truly achieved in the real world.

A new approach closes this loophole and finds that the second law holds far from equilibrium. But the evolution from order to disorder can be unsteady, allowing for pockets of self-organization.

Thermodynamics is one of the most widely misunderstood branches of physics.

The Achilles’ heel of thermodynamics is that, strictly speaking, it applies only when the system under study is in a quiescent state called equilibrium. In this state the system’s parameters, such as mass, energy and shape, have ceased to change.

This, from an insect! Yet humans still treat animals as second-class citizens of this planet. Let's hope we still have bees around in the future. The bee die-off, or "colony collapse disorder" has still not been resolved. We need them, more than they need us, that's for sure.

Australia scientists say bees can count to four

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Researchers have discovered that honey bees can count to four, a report said here on Sunday.

A researcher from the University of Queensland put five markers inside a tunnel and placed nectar in one of them, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio reported.

Honey bees placed in the tunnel flew to the marker with the food, and would still fly to the same marker stripe when the food was removed.

"We find that if you train them to the third stripe, they will look subsequently in the third stripe," researcher Mandyam Srinivasan said.

"If you train them to the fourth stripe, they will look the fourth stripe and so on. But their ability to count seems to go only up to four. They can't count beyond four.

"The more we look at these creatures that have a brain the size of a sesame seed, the more astonished we are. They really have a lot of the capacities that we so-called higher human beings possess."
