It's a bucolic scene that could have happened any time in the past century. But what makes it notable in 2008 is that the guests who have been helping Mr Koarik pick the olives are Israeli Jews: a rabbi, an anthropologist and a youth worker, Hellela Siew.

Asked why he and his volunteers make this often risky mission each year, the US-born rabbi says "if we really believe" the Biblical text that all human beings are made in God's image, "we have got to put our money where our mouth is and be here in an active way to defend human rights". And he also cites the "dialogue of the olive groves" in which Israelis and Palestinians who "have to live and die here together" have "no choice but to communicate"

Tags: palestine-israel

<clipSource>http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/jews-protect-palestinians-in-harvest-of-hate-956706.html</clipSource>

One in Four Children Believes it is Against the Law for Women, to be President

clipped by: Mohir
clipper's remarks:

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

One in Four Children Believes it is Against the Law for Women, African Americans, or Latinos to be President of the United States

A new study in the journal Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy explored elementary-school-age children’s views about the role of race and gender in the U.S. presidency. Results indicated that most children are aware that women and people of color have been excluded from the presidency. Surprisingly, one in four children in the study stated that it was currently against the law for women, African Americans, or Latinos to be President. Many children also blamed those who have been excluded, arguing that they lack the necessary attributes to hold the position, including the fact women aren’t as smart as men.

Tags: usa, president, elections

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/10/one-in-four-chi.html</clipSource>

Stop sending mail you later regret

clipped by: Mohir
clipper's remarks:

Clip Source: gmailblog.blogspot.com

Sometimes I send messages I shouldn't send. Gmail can't always prevent you from sending messages you might later regret, but today we're launching a new Labs feature I wrote called Mail Goggles which may help.

When you enable Mail Goggles, it will check that you're really sure you want to send that late night Friday email. "How many of you are in need of some hope here tonight?” A murmur passes
through the dark auditorium, pleasing the man with the microphone. Heads
nod. “How many of you are at the end of your rope?” he continues. “How many
are ready for an encounter with the Lord?” The man on stage, dressed in
chinos and a crisp white shirt, is Alan Chambers. The clean-cut, married
father of two is the leader of Exodus International, an organisation that
believes it can help people to “find freedom from homosexuality through the
love of Jesus Christ”.

“Am I in denial?” he asks. “Absolutely. I live a life of denial and I love it.
I didn't choose my same-sex feelings but I do choose how I'm going to
steward them. Freedom is possible.” At Exodus people are not gay; they
“struggle with same-sex attraction” (SSA).

“It's holiness.”

Tags: heathens

<clipSource>http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/article4893735.ece?token=null&offset=0&page=1</clipSource>

World Timelines

clipped by: JohnWaterman

Clip Source: www.worldtimelines.org.uk

Spies don't put info on the Internet and sell imagery. We're an Earth-imaging satellite, and we can sell our imagery to customers around the world who have a need to map and measure and monitor things on the ground. We're commercializing a technology that was once only in the hands of the governments. Just like the internet, just like GPS, just like telecom – all invented by the government. And now we are on the front end of the spear that is commercializing this technology.”

Clip Source: news.softpedia.com

The picture shows a high resolution view of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania

Clip Source: news.softpedia.com

Clip Source: news.softpedia.com

Since its launch, on September 6th this year, Google's top-notch satellite has constantly been fine-tuned in order to get even more accurate results. The ultra-high definition images that it is able to provide make GeoEye-1 the world's best commercial satellite.

The state-of-the-art device's first public attempt consisted of a top-down accurate view of Pennsylvania's Kutztown University

Google's next satellite, GeoEye-2, will be able to provide 25-centimeter resolution images, but Google will still be restricted to their 50-centimeter limitations. The launch of GeoEye-2 is set for sometime in 2011 or 2012.

<clipSource>http://news.softpedia.com/news/GeoEye-1-Google-039-s-Satellite-Sends-First-Image-95313.shtml</clipSource>

Sexiest Electric Cars from the Paris Auto Show

clipped by: Mohir

Clip Source: earth2tech.com

This year’s Paris Auto Show is turning out to be the most electrifying one yet, with car makers from all over the world debuting their electric vehicles. The offerings range from far-flung concept cars to very real production models. Solar roofs are a popular theme and lithium-ion battery packs abound. While it will take years to get the world’s cars off petroleum, electric transportation is imminent and the showing in Paris offers a glimpse of what that will look like.

Venturi - Volage

Renault - Z.E. Good!

Clip Source: www.atimes.com

Making a mockery of jihad

Recent terror attacks in India and abroad have created an impression that jihad
 is central to Koranic teaching

jihad does not mean war in the Koran as there are other words for it like qital
and harb. Jihad has been used in the Koran in its root meaning: to
strive for betterment of society, to spread goodness

and contain
 evil

But supposing jihad means war, as some Muslims believe, even then it still
isn't central to Koranic teachings. The word "jihad" occurs in the Koran 41
times though not a single verse uses it in

the sense of war.

The four most fundamental values in the Koran are justice

 benevolence

compassion

and wisdom

One who fails to practice these values can hardly claim to be a true Muslim

It can be said
that compassion is most central to Koranic teachings. The words "compassion"
and "mercy" in their various forms occur in the Koran 335 times

To seek revenge is human
 weakness, not strength

jihad can be declared only by the state

Tags: islam, koran, jihad

<clipSource>http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/JJ10Df01.html</clipSource>

Scientists Explore New Source of Stem Cells

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken

Clip Source: www.latimes.com

Scientists explore new source of stem cells

Scientists have converted cells from human testes into stem cells that grew into muscle, nerve cells and other kinds of tissue, according to a study published Wednesday in the online edition of Nature.

The stem cells offer another potential alternative to embryonic stem cells for researchers who aim to treat diseases such as diabetes and Parkinson's by replacing damaged or malfunctioning cells with custom-grown replacements.

Scientists have also derived flexible adult stem cells from skin, amniotic fluid and menstrual blood.

They are theoretically superior to traditional embryonic stem cells because they can be obtained directly from male patients and used to grow replacement tissue that their bodies won't reject

The cells also have an ethical advantage in that they do not require the destruction of human embryos.

it remains to be seen whether the germline stem cells are able to form as many kinds of functional cells as embryonic stem cells.

<clipSource>http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-stemcell9-2008oct09,0,2313416.story</clipSource>
