Cunning squirrels make bogus burials of 'nuts and seeds' to fool onlookers

Their quick intelligence, razor-sharp memory and ruthless cunning have made them a foe of gardeners everywhere.

Now it turns out that grey squirrels are even more devious than anyone realised.

To protect their winter food stocks from potential thieves, they put on an elaborate show of burying non-existent nuts and seeds, a study has shown.

Scientists say the fake burials are designed to confuse any rival squirrels, birds or humans who might be watching.

The level of deception has astonished animal experts who say it shows a rare form of animal cunning and intelligence.

He found that a fifth of all so-called food burials are fake - and the proportion goes up if they think they are being watched.

"To our knowledge, this is the first study to show evidence of behavioural deception by a rodent, and the first to use an experimental approach to studying deceptive behaviour in in the wild," he says.

The squirrels go to elaborate lengths to keep up the pretence of hiding food.

Amazing Memory Man Brain Being Tested By Scientists

His extensive memory allows him to recall almost any news event and anything he has experienced, including specific dates and even the weather

Williams' type of detailed, exhaustive memory is called hyperthymesia and few known cases exist

Eric Williams' is intrigued about the inner workings of his brother's mind. Eric Williams is in the process of making a documentary about Brad, appropriately titled "Unforgettable."

In the film, which hasn't been completed yet, Williams takes on a person who is Googling answers to 20 questions.

He answered 18 of them correctly and was 11 minutes faster than the searcher.

"All of us have the ability to store all this information and the difference with Brad is he can retrieve it," Eric Williams said.

Identical twins lead to leukaemia breakthrough

clipper's remarks: The twins have been crucial to the new research, as they are genetically identical but one has developed cancer whereas the other has not. The scientists found that the girls’ blood contains genetically abnormal cells known as pre-leukaemic cells. These were formed by a mutation known as translocation, in which two genes fuse to create an abnormal new one. This random event happened in a single cell in one of the twins while they were still in the womb. As the twins shared a placenta, the original mutant’s daughter cells populated the blood of both sisters.
The discovery will help doctors to monitor Isabella, and children like her, so that further genetic damage in her pre-leukaemic stem cells is caught early. By the time she is 14, her pre-leukaemic stem cells should have died naturally.
“Pre-leukaemic cells are still evident, so the sword of Damocles is still hanging there,” Dr Ancliff said. “Hopefully, we will see them disappear.” (Times)

Legless Chihuahua Puppies Get Wheels

Three Chihuahua puppies born without front legs are learning to roll with it -- on wheeled devices specially built for the diminutive dogs.

Pablo, Carmen and Venus were outfitted with the cart-like contraptions Thursday at the North Shore Animal League's Port Washington shelter. Donors gave $1,000 for the lightweight, aluminum-frame rigs, which are strapped on across the canines' backs and have two wheels to replace their missing paws.

Shelter veterinary technician Donna Imhof adopted the three after they were rescued from a Virginia puppy mill in July. She taught them to hop and strut around on their hind legs, but the wheels promise to prevent long-term back and leg problems and potential injuries from accidents.

North Shore Animal League spokeswoman Joanne Yohannon expects it will take the dogs a month or two to master their wheels completely.
