clipper's remarks: Ever wonder what "cephalophory" is? In a nutshell, it's the iconographic tradition whereby saints martyred by decapitation are traditionally depicted carrying or otherwise prominently displaying their severed heads.

Cephalophore

A cephalophore (from the Greek for "head-carrier") is a saint who is generally depicted carrying his head in his hands; in art, this was usually meant to signify that the subject in question had been martyred by beheading. Handling the halo in this circumstance offers a unique challenge for the artist. Some put the halo where the head used to be; others have the saint carrying the halo along with the head. Perhaps the most famous cephalophore is Denis, patron saint of Paris, which according to the Golden Legend miraculously preached with his head on his hands the seven miles from Montmartre to his burying place.

Who Will Cry For Innocent Iraqis?

Who can know of Iraq's suffering and still proudly wave the flag, droning off hollow words of security, democracy and freedom? How can anyone, anyone keep supporting this terrible murderous war? Half of Iraq's population of 27 million are children. UNICEF data show that nearly one-fifth of Iraqis are children under the age of five. These children are the most vulnerable members of Iraqi society. Twenty five percent of Iraqi children are malnourished and one in ten is acutely malnourished.

A USA Today report indicates that 70 percent of Iraqi children suffer from symptoms of traumatic stress syndrome manifested in psychiatric and psychological symptoms. These children daily witness death and destruction in their neighborhood.

Caught in the middle of a multi-sided war, these children are being killed daily as collateral damage

children -- not soldiers, not terrorists, and not insurgents.

Iraqi children scrounging in the garbage for food or going into prostitution to survive.

It's time for that to stop.

start seeing the war through Iraqi eyes as well.

start shedding tears for Iraqis and work together to protect the children and put an end to this senseless war.

The emporium of G Saville & Son Funeral Directors sells its services in the sober and dignified tradition of its trade.

There is nothing to indicate that behind this respectable facade lies a troubling and, to many, macabre tale of filial devotion.

For ten years Saville & Son, in a busy shopping street in North-West London, has been receiving weekly visits from two middle-aged sisters.

Valmai and Josephine Lamas visit separately but their purpose is the same. They come to see their mother, Annie, who died a decade ago aged 84.

The body of the widow has been kept refrigerated on the premises on the instructions of her two daughters and is brought into the funeral parlour's chapel of rest each weekend for the visits.

This bizarre, but entirely legal, arrangement has cost the sisters an estimated £13,600 in fees, replacement coffins - there have been five so far - and "make-up", including lipsticks and foundation, for their mother.

Twenty-nine Southern Californians are believed to have died as a result of the recent heat wave, officials said, with most of the victims fitting within the familiar patterns of heat-wave deaths.

Many, but not all, were elderly. Many lived on the margins, unable or unwilling to spend the money to cool their homes. Some were isolated or fiercely independent, refusing or unable to leave their homes.

Some victims had contact with concerned family members and neighbors during the long, hot holiday weekend. But in the end, they decided to stick it out.

Most died alone.

State health officials and advocates for the elderly have called heat waves "silent natural disasters" that reach into the homes of the vulnerable and strike them down outside of public view.

As a child I learned to Worship that piece of colored cloth.

My family, my school, the movies, TV taught me to believe that fragment of fabric stood for good things.

I watched my father, a World War II Army veteran, give homage to that wad of material.

As an airman I saluted that banner for the four years I served in the Air Force where I stood ready to help launch Titan Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles on command.

Then I became aware that the wonderful things for which that clump of colors is suppose to represent, have not been achieved.

I came to know that awful, unlawful, unwise and immoral acts have occurred under the stars and stripes.

But I still clung onto the belief and hope that someday, somehow conditions would change and the good things for which that rag is still supposed to stand would yet be realized.

St. Louis- His government broke his heart but it could not break Air Force veteran Charles Powell's spirit. Fighting back tears, the 64 year-old vet stood tall and resolute in front of 400 of his comrades, describing in verse the final steps of a painful disillusionment.

After four and a half years of war in Iraq, Veterans For Peace convened again this summer and Charles Powell was there as always. As his turn came at the Speakout microphone he struggled a few seconds to compose himself. Then, in a clear voice growing more determined as he spoke, Powell mirrored the pain, regret and anger in the hearts of so many who listened.

The cliché that people and nations learn from history is not only overused, but also overestimated; often we fail to learn from history, or draw the wrong conclusions.

1. Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism.

2. Disdain for the importance of human rights.

3. Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause.

4. The supremacy of the military/avid militarism.

5. Rampant sexism.

6. A controlled mass media.

8. Religion and ruling elite tied together.

9. Power of corporations protected.

Does any of this ring alarm bells? Of course not. After all, this is America, officially a democracy with the rule of law, a constitution, a free press, honest elections, and a well-informed public constantly being put on guard against evils.
