Why kissing means more to women

If a picture is worth a 1,000 words, so may be a kiss - or certainly to a woman anyway, researchers say.

They use kissing as a way of assessing the recipient as a potential partner, and later to maintain intimacy and to check the status of a relationship.

But men placed less importance on it, using it to increase the likelihood of sex, Evolutionary Psychology reported.

Transplant girl comes face-to-face with own heart

Arriving at an art gallery, Jennifer Sutton was faced with the organ removed from her body in a transplant operation just three months ago.

With the scar from the surgery still clearly visible on her chest, the 23-year-old science graduate posed for photographs beside her old, diseased heart, which has been preserved in a jar.

"My first reaction when I saw it was, 'yuk!'," she said.

"But I was really curious and excited to see it.

"It was slightly surreal but amazing at the same time to see the object that has caused me such pain and anguish."

Miss Sutton was 19 when she was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy, a genetic condition which killed her mother, Sally, when her daughter was 13.

The condition causes the heart muscle to stiffen so that it cannot relax properly between beats.

In April this year she was told she needed a transplant and fortunately a donor was found quickly. The operation took place at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge in June.

Astronomers Get First Look at Protoplanetary "Rainfall"

Think your town is rainy? Try living on a planet still in the process of formation, where five whole oceans of water might come raining out of space at supersonic speed.

Astronomers at the University of Rochester said Wednesday that they've observed this short-lived process of pre-planetary rainfall for what seems to be the first time in astronomical history (or, to be fair, at least the first time by Earth-based astronomers).

The most likely explanation for the observations, they say, is that icy material is falling or has fallen from the envelope that birthed the star onto a dense, surrounding disc. It is precisely within this kind of disc formation that planets are believed to develop.

"Icy material from the envelope is in free-fall, reaching supersonic speeds and crashing into the protoplanetary disk,

The ice vaporizes on impact, and the warm water vapor emits a distinctive spectrum of infrared light.

A rise in oxygen levels around 2.5 billion years ago may have occurred after a massive tectonic shift forced many submerged volcanoes above water, a new study says.

These above-ground volcanoes, such as the Piton de La Fournaise volcano on the island of La Réunion (above, erupting in April 2007) stopped spewing oxygen-destroying chemicals into the air—allowing vital ingredients for complex life to build up.

At that time, Earth's early atmosphere wasn't fit to breathe. Filled with nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and sulfurous fumes, the air would have left humans gasping.

These noxious fumes held a clamp on evolution: Complex life didn't really get going until the planet's skies began to fill with oxygen, allowing more efficient methods of extracting energy from nutrients.

Submerged volcanoes spew a different set of gases than those that erupt into the air.

AMERICA’S spies, like America’s teenagers, are secretive, talk in code and get in trouble if they’re not watched closely.

In December, officials say, the agencies will introduce A-Space, a top-secret variant of the social networking Web sites MySpace and Facebook. The “A” stands for “analyst,” and where Facebook users swap snapshots, homework tips and gossip, intelligence analysts will be able to compare notes on satellite photos of North Korean nuclear sites, Iraqi insurgents and Chinese missiles.

A-Space will join Intellipedia, the spooks’ Wikipedia, where intelligence officers from all 16 American spy agencies pool their knowledge. Sixteen months after its creation, officials say, the top-secret version of Intellipedia has 29,255 articles, with an average of 114 new articles and more than 4,800 edits to articles added each workday.

KATHMANDU - Officials at Nepal's state-run airline have sacrificed two goats to appease Akash Bhairab, the Hindu sky god, following technical problems with one of its Boeing 757 aircraft, the carrier said Tuesday.

The goats were sacrificed in front of the troublesome aircraft Sunday at Nepal's only international airport in Kathmandu in accordance with Hindu traditions, an official said.

It is common in Nepal to sacrifice animals like goats and buffaloes to appease different Hindu deities.

DANOGRAM, India (AFP) - An Indian woman whose claimed miracle cure from cancer led to Mother Teresa being thrust toward sainthood has accused Catholic nuns of abandoning her to a life of misery.

"I will not go to any church," 40-year-old Manica Besra told AFP, squatting on the floor of her thatched and mud house in Danogram village, 500 kilometres (310 miles) from the eastern city of Kolkata, where Mother Teresa worked.

It was Besra's alleged miracle cure from a "lumpy" tumour on September 6, 1998 -- a year after the nun's death -- that led to the Vatican clearing the way for Mother Teresa's beatification in October 2003.

"They made of lot of promises to me and assured me of financial help for my livelihood and my children's education," she claimed, adding that she was also escorted to the Vatican for the beatification ceremony.

"After that, they forgot me," said Besra, tears welling up in her eyes.
