Asian "Atlantis" Shows Strange Structure

Not far from Taiwan, Pacific waters engulf stone structures just off the coast of the tiny Japanese island of Yonaguni Jima, part of the Ryukyu archipelago in this undated photo.

The structures maybe the ruins of a 5,000-year-old city that featured a castle, several temples, and a stadium, according to a Japanese researcher who has been diving at the site for past 15 years. (Read full Story.)

"The largest structure looks like a complicated, monolithic, stepped pyramid that rises from a depth of 25 meters [82 feet]," said the scientist, Masaaki Kimura of the University of the Ryukyus. Kimura recently suggested that the site might have been sunk by a massive tsunami similar to the one that hit the island in 1771.

Wheelchair-Bound Woman Dies After Being Shocked With Taser 10 Times

A Clay County woman's family said it's seeking justice after their loved one died shortly after being shocked 10 times with Taser guns during a confrontation with police.

The family of 56-year-old Emily Delafield said it would take the Green Cove Springs Police Department to court.

Within an hour of her call to 911, Delafield, a wheelchair-bound woman documented to have mental illness, was dead.

"One, she's in a wheelchair. Two, she's schizophrenic. Three, they're using a Taser on a person that's in a wheelchair, and then four is that they tasered her 10 times for a period of like two minutes," Alexander said.

According to a police report, one of the officers used her Taser gun nine times for a total of 160 seconds and the other officer discharged his Taser gun once for a total of no more than five seconds.

On her death certificate, the medical examiner ruled Delafield's death a homicide.

Indeed, it is a sad day for humanity, and a bitter personal defeat for me, being as I had long argued that Chocolate and Beer were in fact enough to keep a nation of feuding and indistinguishable ethnic groups together. Guess I can't be right all the time!

BRUSSELS: Belgium has given the world Audrey Hepburn, René Magritte, the saxophone and deep-fried potato slices that somehow are called French.

But the back story of this flat country of 10.4 million is of a bad marriage writ large - two nationalities living together that cannot stand each other. Now, more than three months after a general election, Belgium has failed to create a government, producing a crisis so profound that it has led to a flood of warnings, predictions, even promises that the country is about to disappear.

"We are two different nations, an artificial state created as a buffer between big powers, and we have nothing in common except a king, chocolate and beer," said Filip Dewinter, the leader of Vlaams Belang, or Flemish Bloc, the extreme-right, xenophobic Flemish party, in an interview. "It's 'bye-bye Belgium' time."

Women in Bihar break social taboo

Breaking the tradition and an orthodox mindset, two women of a sleepy village in Nawada district in central Bihar not only carried the body of their father to the cremation ground but also lit the pyre.

Traditionally, women are forbidden from entering cremation grounds.

However, backed by a local social organisation called Arjak Sangh, sisters Sharmila Devi and Meena Devi did something women in the state had never done before, even though they have three brothers in the family.

Even in families where there are no sons or where they are away, cremation is done by some other male family member. In some states, Hindu women are allowed to go to the cremation grounds, but they are not supposed to light the funeral pyre.

"We wanted to send a message to the society that there is no difference between sons and daughters. Even daughters can do anything in the world," Sharmila Devi told a private news channel. Interestingly, men in and around the village supported this call for change

The Blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) Is a deepwater fish rarely seen by humans. It is found along the shores of Australia and Tasmania. Blobfish are made mostly of jelly. This jelly flesh weighs less than water, allowing them to float, and conserving energy otherwise spent in an attempt to stay off the sea floor. It is also an alternative to a gas-filled swim bladder, a feature of many fish in shallower water. At 800 metres deep, the pressure is about 80 times higher than at sea level, so any gas would be too compressed to serve the purpose. Their lack of muscles is no hindrance – they have a feeding strategy that consists of sitting and waiting for something edible to pass.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders revealed his daughter as a lesbian during a surprise reversal of his stance on marriage equality yesterday.

he mayor, a Republican and former police chief, made his dramatic announcements during a press conference yesterday afternoon, saying that despite past opposition to marriage equality, he had decided to support, rather than veto, a resolution in favor of allowing California gays and lesbians to marry.

An emotional Sanders, accompanied by his wife, Rana, disclosed that his daughter, Lisa, is a lesbian, and said, "I’ve decided to lead with my heart... to do what I think is right and to take a stand on behalf of equality and social justice."

Added the mayor, "I just could not bring myself to tell an entire group of our community they were less important, less worthy, or less deserving of the rights and responsibilities of marriage than anyone else, simply because of their sexual orientation."

"Nonexistent" Flying Fox Discovered

September 18, 2007—This unusual species of flying fox was recently discovered in the Philippines not long after it was deemed not to exist.

"When we first arrived on Mindoro, a local resident that we hired as a guide described the bat to me in great detail, and he asked me what it was called," Esselstyn said.

"I politely told him that there was no such bat. I was wrong."

he Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has gone to many strange places in its search for ways to identify terrorists before they attack, but perhaps none stranger than this lab on the outskirts of Russia's capital.

SSRM Tek is presented to a subject as an innocent computer game that flashes subliminal images across the screen -- like pictures of Osama bin Laden or the World Trade Center. The "player" -- a traveler at an airport screening line, for example -- presses a button in response to the images, without consciously registering what he or she is looking at. The terrorist's response to the scrambled image involuntarily differs from the innocent person's, according to the theory.

The very walls of the mighty Ur of the Chaldees cracking under the strain of massive troop movements, the privatisation of looting as landlords buy up the remaining sites of ancient Mesopotamia to strip them of their artefacts and wealth. The near total destruction of Iraq's historic past - the very cradle of human civilisation - has emerged as one of the most shameful symbols of our disastrous occupation.

Evidence amassed by archaeologists shows that even those Iraqis who trained as archaeological workers in Saddam Hussein's regime are now using their knowledge to join the looters in digging through the ancient cities, destroying thousands of priceless jars, bottles and other artefacts in their search for gold and other treasures.
