News report on serial killer striking again in downtown Miami. In case anybody hasn't seen it yet. UPDATE: Police here and in UK reckon the suspect may have already fled to Europe and are trying to contact people they think could be potential targets for him.

Mental disorders associated with ageing, including Alzheimer's, are far more common in domesticated cats than previously realised, researchers say.

According to a forthcoming paper in the Journal of Small Animal Practice, more than half of all cats over the age of 15 show signs of senility.

The findings support a growing body of evidence suggesting that most, if not all, mammals, can suffer age-related conditions normally associated with people.

Symptoms may also include inappropriate vocalising, forgetting commands, breaking housetraining, pacing, wandering, sluggishness, unusual interest or disinterest in food, and decreased grooming and confusion, such as "forgetting that they have just been fed", says Gunn-Moore.

"Many people will be surprised by the fact that domestic cats can develop a form of Alzheimer's, just like their owners," she says.

Wood adds that pets are also living longer "so this type of distressing disease is only going to get more common".

A distant star that hurtles through space at extraordinary speeds has a huge, comet-like tail trailing in its wake, astronomers say.

The appendage, which measures a colossal 13 light years in length, was spotted by Nasa's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (Galex) space telescope.

The researchers said that nothing like it had ever been spotted around a star.

They believe the star, known as Mira, will help them to study what happens as stars meet their demise.

Mira (also called Mira A) has captivated astronomers for more than 400 years.

It sits about 350 light-years from Earth in a constellation known as Cetus, and is accompanied in orbit by a smaller secondary star, called Mira B, forming a binary system.

Billions of years ago, Mira would have been much like our Sun, but as it now enters its death-throes it has swollen into a type of star known as a red giant.

Yet despite centuries of study, its spectacular tail had remained undetected.

Get Your Music By Mood

another music site that does allow you to choose songs based on mood and energy, but it has a few problems of its own.

Musicovery is available at http://musicovery.com/.

To use Musicovery, you don't specify a song or an artist. Instead you use the control panel to specify a range of years you want your music to come from (from the 50s to now) and the genre (you can choose all genres or any one of a range. Strangely, there's no country music!) Finally, you use a small map to click on the mood you want your music (upbeat/positive all the way to calm/dark. The map is divided into four quadrants.)

The page will refresh, showing a map of music to play, and presenting you with a variety of artists.

I listened to Musicovery for quite a while and appreciated that the music was all upbeat, without the occasional slow-sad song to break the mood

But I did miss the ability to specify specific artists and to thumbs-down those songs I don't want.

Minuscule wind engines could help to take computing power to the next level, scientists believe.

US researchers have developed a prototype device that creates a "breeze" made up of charged particles, or ions, to cool computer chips.

The "ionic wind", the scientists say, will help to manage the heat generated by increasingly powerful, yet ever-shrinking devices.

As computers grow increasingly powerful, computer chips are becoming more and more densely packed with transistors, the basic building blocks of microprocessors.

"In computers and electronics, power equals heat, so we need to find ways to manage the heat generated in more powerful laptops and handheld computers."

Conventional cooling technologies using fans are limited because they can suffer from air-flow problems.

But the new experimental wind engine employs a different strategy.

The team found the prototype engine boosted cooling

The team said the device increased the cooling rate from a conventional fan by up to 250%.

As far back as I can remember there has always been a box of Cheerios in our house. Cheerios are not as glamorous as some of the more sugary cereals, but for better or worse they are a staple in many a household. However, I recently learned that Cheerios can be used for so much more than just a cereal.
