40,000-year-old site discovered in Australia

Archaeologists have discovered that an ancient occupation site in north-west Victoria (Australia) is much older than first thought. Tests on charcoal and stone fragments found in Box Gully, near Lake Tyrell, confirm the site was occupied 44,000 years ago. This would make the gully the oldest Indigenous site in Victoria, and one of the oldest in Australia - a finding welcomed by Tati Tati traditional owner Brendan Kennedy.

Archaeologist Tom Richards said the site could one day rival Lake Mungo in New South Wales for its cultural and scientific importance. "Certainly it has demonstrated that the Victorian mallee has human occupation going back at least 30,000 years, probably past 40,000 years," he said. "If we've got one site that's away from the Murray River out in the mallee, there's bound to be more, many more."

Deep in the heart of the California desert lies one of the natural world's most puzzling mysteries: the moving rocks of Death Valley. These are not ordinary moving rocks that tumble down mountainsides in avalanches, are carried along riverbeds by flowing water, or are tossed aside by animals. These rocks, some as heavy as 700 pounds, are inexplicably transported across a virtually flat desert plain, leaving erratic trails in the hard mud behind them, some hundreds of yards long. They move by some mysterious force, and in the nine decades since we have known about them, no one has ever seen them move.

The Racetrack is a unique attraction of Death Valley

that not many park visitors get to see. It's a dry lakebed in a very remote and beautiful area. On the north end of the lakebed is a rock formation known as the grandstands. Rocks from the grandstands and other nearby formations break off and fall onto the lake. There, they perform feats that make this remote playa world-famous.

Believe it or not, booking a hotel in space may become a reality sooner rather than later, and if things go as planned, the Galactic Suite will actually be welcoming in guests sans gravity in just five short years. Folks who make the trip will be able to "see the sun rise 15 times a day and use Velcro suits to crawl around their rooms by sticking themselves to the walls," and while spas with floating water sure sounds like something we'd be interested in, the nightly fees are quite literally out of this world. How much? Try $4 million for a three-day stay -- better bring your camera, eh?

Prehistoric settlement unearthed in China

Archaeologists recently excavated prehistoric settlements dating back to early Neolithic (9,000 to 8,000 years ago) in the Peiligang Cultural layer of Tang Period at 13 kilometers south Xinzheng City, Henan Province of China. It is not only the first time for China to excavate such a large prehistoric area, but also is the first time to discover a 'double-room' house (a large and a small).
Zhang Songlin, director of the Zhengzhou Cultural Relics and Archaeological Institute said that the unearthed site include 60 houses, covering more than 6,000 square meters. It is divided into three groups, about 20 for each. At the regional center of each group, there is the so-called 'double-room' house, which was most likely belonging to important figures in the ethnic groups.

A Texas Church Cancels a Funeral.....the deceased was GAY!

A nondenominational mega-church offers to plan and pay for the funeral of the brother of one of its members, reneges on the deal at the last minute when they discover the deceased was gay. The pastor said some of the photos that were to be displayed at the service showed hugging of two men. The mother wanted those pictures shown. The pastor felt that the mother of a murderer wouldn't expect to display photos of her son committing a murder, so why should this woman want to display a photo of her son indicating he is gay. This is enough to make me want to vomit. I am so sick of religious hypocrites causing pain for innocent and good people because of their own inborn sickness. Shame on this church and its so-called spiritual leader. My wish is for him to become a spirit as soon as possible.

Church Denies Navy Vet a Funeral After Discovering He Was Gay

A church in Grand Prairie, Texas that volunteered to host a funeral for the brother of one of its members took back its offer after officials discovered that the deceased brother, who had been prayed for by the congregation when he was ill, was gay

Mr. Sinclair, 46, died Monday. He was a native of Fort Worth, a Navy veteran who served in Desert Storm helping rescuers find downed pilots, and a singer in the Turtle Creek Chorale, said his mother, Eva Bowers. He did not belong to a church. His brother, Lee, is an employee and member of High Point, a nondenominational mega-congregation led by the Rev. Gary Simons. Mr. Simons is the brother-in-law of Joel Osteen, nationally known pastor of Houston's Lakewood Church."

Church members had prayed for Sinclair after he was diagnosed with a heart condition six years ago and had even sent staff to minister to the family as soon as he had died.

clipper's remarks: Definitely what I've always believed- I've only believed in assigning home reading [getting students to do some reading at home], optional spelling practice, reviewing for tests, and finishing projects that they had some class time to do as well. If a student has been away, or is going on vacation, catch up work is a good idea, otherwise piles of worksheets with no reason makes no sense whatsoever.

CHICAGO - Artists, sculptors and photographers knew Abraham Lincoln’s face had a good side. Now it’s confirmed by science.

Laser scans of two life masks, made from plaster casts of Lincoln’s face, reveal the 16th president’s unusual degree of facial asymmetry, according to a new study.

The left side of Lincoln’s face was much smaller than the right, an aberration called cranial facial microsomia. The defect joins a long list of ailments — including smallpox, heart illness and depression — that modern doctors have diagnosed in Lincoln.

The director of a Christian boot camp and an employee were arrested Friday for allegedly dragging a 15-year-old girl behind a van after she fell behind the group during a morning run, authorities said.

Charles Eugene Flowers and Stephanie Bassitt of San Antonio-based Love Demonstrated Ministries, a 32-day boot camp, were arrested on aggravated assault charges for the alleged June 12 incident.

The two are accused of tying the girl to the van with a rope then dragging her
