My dad has long departed since then, but every time I read these words Lincoln wrote to his son's teacher, they bring a tear to my eyes. Beautiful and sincere advice for anyone to follow.

Clip Source: vnicholas.wordpress.com

Lincoln’s letter to his son’s teacher

He will have to learn, I know,
that all men are not just,
all men are not true.
But teach him also that
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish Politician,
there is a dedicated leader…
Teach him for every enemy there is a friend,

Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books…
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky,
bees in the sun,
and the flowers on a green hillside.

In the school teach him
it is far honourable to fail
than to cheat…
Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas,
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong…
Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people,
and tough with the tough.

Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he’s right.

This is a big order,
but see what you can do…
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son!

Tags: abraham lincoln, lincoln, wisdom, proverbs, teach, learn, advice, life, father, son

<clipSource>http://vnicholas.wordpress.com/2006/12/28/lincolns-letter-to-his-sons-teacher/</clipSource>

Adult breast-feeding sucks

clipped by: laceym
clipper's remarks: I don't know what to say.

Clip Source: www.iol.co.za

Cairo, Egypt - Al-Azhar University, one of Sunni Islam's most prestigious institutions, ordered one of its clerics Monday to face a disciplinary panel after he issued a controversial decree allowing adults to breast-feed.

Ezzat Attiya had issued a fatwa, or religious edict, saying adult men could breast-feed from female work colleagues as a way to avoid breaking Islamic rules that forbid men and women from being alone together.

In Islamic tradition, breast-feeding establishes a degree of maternal relation, even if a woman nurses a child who is not biologically hers. It means the child could not marry the nursing woman's biological children.

Attiya - the head of Al-Azhar's department of Hadith, or teachings of the Prophet Muhammad - insisted the same would apply with adults.

He argued that if a man nursed from a co-worker, it would establish a family bond between them and allow the two to work side-by-side without raising suspicion of an illicit sexual relation.

Tags: wtf

<clipSource>http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=3&art_id=nw20070522065034319C480927</clipSource>

How to Become an "Outside the Box" Thinker

clipped by: bioplasmik

Clip Source: www.canadaone.com

Inside The Box
Thinking inside the box means accepting the status quo. For example, Charles H. Duell, Director of the US Patent Office, said, "Everything that can be invented has been invented." That was in 1899: clearly he was in the box!

In-the-box thinkers find it difficult to recognize the quality of an idea. An idea is an idea. A solution is a solution. In fact, they can be quite pigheaded when it comes to valuing an idea. They rarely invest time to turn a mediocre solution into a great solution.

Outside the Box
Thinking outside the box requires different attributes that include:

Willingness to take new perspectives to day-to-day work.

Openness to do different things and to do things differently.

Focusing on the value of finding new ideas and acting on them.

Striving to create value in new ways.

Listening to others.

Supporting and respecting others when they come up with new ideas.

Out-of-the box thinking requires an openness to new ways of seeing the world and a willingness to explore.

Tags: thinking, news

<clipSource>http://www.canadaone.com/ezine/april02/out_of_the_box_thinking.html</clipSource>
