DENVER -- In the muted light of the maternity ward, photographer Sandy Puc' works steadily, composing portraits of David. She focuses on his tiny toes, his curled fists, his mother gently stroking his cheek.

"If you want to put your lips right on the top of his head?" she asks David's father. "There. That's beautiful."

Sandy knows what the pictures will mean; that's why she has come and stayed all night. A photographer who teaches portraiture worldwide, she also runs a volunteer network dedicated to photographing dead and dying infants.

The first time she was asked to photograph a dead baby, Sandy wanted to say no.

"I felt like a wrecking ball hit me," Sandy said. She wasn't sure she could hold herself together.

In this season of thankfulness, it's a good idea to move beyond being thankful for more food than we could ever eat and more family than we could ever argue with and take stock of other issues in our lives that deserve a nod.

We are humans, and this species has a lot to be grateful for.

The first real human trait was bipedalism, walking on two legs, which appeared more than 4.5 million years ago. No one knows why we became bipedal, but walking upright allows us not only to cover a lot of ground in an efficient way; it also allows us to carry things, like shopping bags and purses, or a cooked turkey on a platter.

We do, however, share many characteristics with other primates, and if they could talk, they'd give thank along with us. There's binocular vision—good for leaping through trees or dodging kisses from elderly relatives. And color vision is an advantage when looking about the forest for ripe fruit or in the grocery store through various flavors of JELL-O.

Megan was contacted on My- Space by a boy named Josh Evans. He said that he was 16, that he was home-schooled and that he recently had moved to nearby O'Fallon. He was a dream: He played the guitar and drums; he was handsome; and he told Megan that he liked her a lot.

Josh suddenly told her, "I don't know if I want to be friends with you any longer because I heard you're not a very nice friend."

Josh then apparently passed her messages on to others, unleashing a torrent of insults from others in an Internet pile-on.

Starting with a small block of brain tissue, the researchers bounce electrons off the top of the block to generate a cross-sectional picture of the nerve fibers in that slice. They then take a very thin--30-nanometer--slice off the top of the block and repeat the process.

A Wiring Diagram of the Brain

New technologies that allow scientists to trace the fine wiring of the brain more accurately than ever before could soon generate a complete wiring diagram--including every tiny fiber and miniscule connection--of a piece of brain.

Dubbed connectomics, these maps could uncover how neural networks perform their precise functions in the brain, and they could shed light on disorders thought to originate from faulty wiring, such as autism and schizophrenia.

With an estimated 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion synapses in the human brain, creating an all-encompassing map of even a small chunk is a daunting task. Using standard methods, it would take roughly three billion person years to generate the wiring diagram of a single cortical column.

Several studies by sociologists have looked at whether the effect of money on happiness results largely from the things money can buy (the so called absolute income effect) or from comparing one's income to the income of others (relative income effect) and concluded the latter is most important, even though economists usually only focus on the size of salaries.

"Our findings are in sharp contrast to the typical assumption in economics according to which people care only about their own achievements and performance levels.

"It is also of great practical importance, for example for wage policies of firms, labour supply decision and patterns of savings and consumption," says Prof Falk.

The implications of this work is that we are trapped on a "hedonic treadmill", as one sociologist put it, which means an endless effort to "keep up with the Joneses" to stay happy.

Is the beauty of a sculpture in the brain of the beholder?

Is there an objective biological basis for the experience of beauty in art? Or is aesthetic experience entirely subjective? This question has been addressed in a paper published in this week’s PLoS ONE, Cinzia Di Dio, Emiliano Macaluso and Giacomo Rizzolatti. The researchers used fMRI scans to study the neural activity in subjects with no knowledge of art criticism, who were shown images of Classical and Renaissance sculptures.

The ‘objective’ perspective was examined by contrasting images of Classical and Renaissance sculptures of canonical proportions, with images of the same sculptures whose proportions were altered to create a comparable degraded aesthetic value.

In terms of brain activations, this comparison showed that the presence of the “golden ratio” in the original material activated specific sets of cortical neurons as well as (crucially) the insula, a structure mediating emotions.

It's the birthday of the man who helped spark the Enlightenment in France, writing under the name Voltaire, born Francois-Marie Arouet in Paris (1694). He was already a well-known playwright and poet when, in 1725, he got into an argument with a nobleman. A few days later, that nobleman hired a group of men to surround Voltaire in the street and beat him with cudgels. The nobleman stood by and watched. Voltaire was outraged when none of his political friends came to his defense after the incident. He had thought that his stature as a poet made him the equal of the aristocrats he spent all his time with, but apparently he was still a second-class citizen. He began publicizing the incident and calling for justice, and he was thrown into the prison at the Bastille. He was released only on the condition that he leave France, and so he went to England. He spent most of the rest of his life in exile, and his writings built up support in Europe for what we now think of as basic human rights.

We have, to the maximum possible extent allowed by our intellect and never-ending desire, consumed the planet and therefore traded in tomorrow for today. And we keep making these choices, every day, choosing dams over salmon, oil over whales, cars over polar bears, death over life.

When you jump off a 100-story building, everything seems fine for a while. In fact, the view just keeps getting more clear as you get closer to the ground. What could possibly go wrong? Well, maybe one thing. It's not the fall that kills you. It's the sudden stop at the bottom.

Despite our apparently brief stay on this most wondrous of planets, it has become clear we will take a large percentage of the planet's biological diversity along with us into the abyss.

Caesarea, May 25: Scuba divers swimming under the blue Mediterranean sea surface are not always looking for fish, in one spot they are checking out exhibits in Israel's first underwater museum in the city of Caesarea.

As divers descend, the light dissipates to reveal remnants of what experts say was one of the biggest and most sophisticated sea ports of the Roman Empire.

And for the first time in about 2,000 years, the ancient harbour is open for business. The tourism business, that is.

With waterproof maps and an instructor to guide them, scuba divers can maneuver through the larger artifacts by following ropes tied between the poles in the sea bed. Snorkelers can view remnants found in more shallow waters.

Romans conquered Caesarea in 63 BC. King Herod named the port city in 22 BC to honour his patron Caesar Augustus and commissioned the building of the harbour, as well as other major projects, many of whose remains are now on display.
