It's a perfect toilet tank book. Flipping through it, I found out there's a word for a self-destructive belief I've been suffering with in silence my entire life -- resistentialism: "The theory that inanimate objects demonstrate hostile behavior towards us." (Here's the Wikipedia entry on resistentialism.)

Dalai Lama 'may pick successor'

The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, says he is considering breaking with centuries of tradition and naming his own successor

Usually, following the death of a Dalai Lama, senior Tibetan Buddhist officials, guided by dreams and signs, identify a young child to succeed him.

But the Dalai Lama said he feared China would try to influence this process.

He said he was considering whether his successor should be picked by him, or elected by high ranking Buddhist monks.

"If the Tibetan people want to keep the Dalai Lama system, one of the possibilities I have been considering with my aides is to select the next Dalai Lama while I'm alive," he told the Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun during a visit to Japan.

Tibetans are concerned over what will happen when the 72-year-old Dalai Lama dies, fearing that Beijing will try to take control of the succession.

American and European researchers have made most of the progress so far in biotechnology. Yet they still face one very large obstacle — God, as defined by some Western religions.

While critics on the right and the left fret about the morality of stem-cell research and genetic engineering, prominent Western scientists have been going to Asia, like the geneticists Nancy Jenkins and Neal Copeland, who left the National Cancer Institute and moved last year to Singapore.

“Asian religions worry less than Western religions that biotechnology is about ‘playing God,’” says Cynthia Fox, the author of “Cell of Cells,” a book about the global race among stem-cell researchers. “Therapeutic cloning in particular jibes well with the Buddhist and Hindu ideas of reincarnation.”

Looking up to her dad who knows best.
She would never even think of him less.

She's "Daddy's Little Girl" and loves it that way.
He watches her grow day by day.

Her dad drives her to school everyday.
When he drops her off "I LOVE YOU" are the last words they say.

Her dad watches her walk out the door to the dance.
He's so proud and knows she'll take every chance.

But her dad is getting weak.
Her dad is fighting but this something he cannot beat.

She goes to the hospital and is told her dad died.
She burst out in tears and asks god "WHY?"

"Why did you take my daddy away?"
"Could you just have waited another day?"

"But what can I do now?"
"Just prove I'll be the best I can be and keep that vow."

He watches her now from above,
And now he sees all her love.

She'll always be "Daddy's little girl" in her mind,
Because her daddy was one-of-a-kind.

"I love you" is the message she will always send.

The crafty filmmakers took advantage of one of Mother Nature's tricks called imprinting: If you had grown up thinking your mom was inside that noisy plane—or was that noisy plane—you'd have gladly tolerated it, too.

In the absence of an appropriate stimulus, however, practically any object can become a source of comfort to the newborn. After one to two hours of exposure to the target, a gosling will have formed a strong preference, avoiding novel objects and showing signs of distress when the "imprinted" object is removed.

The World's Worst Web Censors

Human rights group Reporters Without Borders identifies the world's 13 most pronounced Internet “black holes”

Next time you complain about blocked Web sites at work, consider the fate of citizens in North Korea. The government of Kim Jong-Il grants permission to use the Internet to only a few thousand citizens. And once they're logged on, they get access to about 30 Web sites, all of them ladling praise on the Dear Leader.

Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (http://www.rsf.org) tabulated a list of the 13 countries that do the most to restrict access to and use of the Internet. Many of them imprison journalists who dare to use the Web to criticize the government and its policies. This BusinessWeek.com slide show takes a closer look at the 13 most censored nations and shows the number of user votes each received (larger numbers indicating a higher degree of censorship).
