What culture tells us about love is generally young love. Songs and movies and literature show us the rapture and the betrayal, the breathlessness and the tears.

That is beginning to change, Dr. Cole said, as life expectancy increases, and a generation more sexually liberated begins to age. Nursing homes are being forced to confront an increase in sexual activity.

And despite the stereotypes, researchers who study emotions across the life span say old love is in many ways more satisfying than young love — even as it is also more complex, as the O’Connors’ example shows.

“Young love is about wanting to be happy,” she said. “Old love is about wanting someone else to be happy.”

Young brains tend to go to extremes — the swooning or sobbing so characteristic of young love. Old love puts things in soft focus.

“As you experience them, they’re more precious, they’re richer.”

A Harrah's waiter

Al Castro found a lost wallet last week, with no identification inside.

Dr. Thomas McCauley, a Rhode Island eye surgeon in New Orleans for a convention, said he stashed some money he'd won in a spare wallet he carries in case his pocket is picked. He said he figured the cash had been stolen.

But Castro tracked down McCauley and returned the money, initially refusing to take a reward.

McCauley called Castro "the saint of New Orleans," and in recognition of his honesty, McCauley gave him all the money Monday.

Castro is also a student at a local university, in addition to working full time at the downtown hotel and casino to support his wife and 1-year-old child. McCauley said Castro was " getting the wallet back as a stipend for his college."

Police Superintendent Warren Riley, city officials, the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau, Harrah's and the San Francisco-based American Academy of Ophthalmology also honored Castro on Monday.

For Bruce Masse, an environmental archaeologist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, there is no confusion as he looks at this ancient petroglyph, scratched into a rock by a Native American shaman. “You can’t tell me that isn’t a comet,” he says.

In Masse’s interpretation, the petroglyph commemorates a comet that streaked across the sky just a few years before Europeans came to this area of New Mexico. But that event is a minor blip compared to what he is really after. Masse believes that he has uncovered evidence that a gigantic comet crashed into the Indian Ocean several thousand years ago and nearly wiped out all life on the planet. What’s more, he thinks that clues about the catastrophe are hiding in plain sight, embedded in the creation stories of cultural groups around the world.

Noah's Ark flood spurred European farming

LONDON (Reuters) - An ancient flood some say could be the origin of the story of Noah's Ark may have helped the spread of agriculture in Europe 8,300 years ago by scattering the continent's earliest farmers, researchers said on Sunday.

Using radiocarbon dating and archaeological evidence, a British team showed the collapse of the North American ice sheet, which raised global sea levels by as much as 1.4 meters, displaced tens of thousands of people in southeastern Europe who carried farming skills to their new homes.

The researchers said in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews their study provides direct evidence linking the flood that breached a ridge keeping the Mediterranean apart from the Black Sea to the rise of farming in Europe.

The researchers created reconstructions of the Mediterranean and Black Sea shoreline before and after the rise in sea levels. They estimated the flood covered some 73,000 square kilometers over a 34-year period, causing mass displacement of people.

Woman, 102, strips for nude charity calendar

A woman of 102 has stripped off for a nude calendar in aid of her village football club.

Nora Hardwick, who was born in 1905, posed as Miss November behind the bar of the Ermine Way pub in Ancaster, Lincolnshire, for a charity calendar to raise funds for the local team, Ancaster Athletic.

"They draped a bit of pink cloth around my shoulders, but at my age I just don't have the model body to be taking it all off," she said.

"It was all very tastefully done. You couldn't see any of the bits or anything."

"I suppose they asked me because I'm the oldest person in the village and I'm all for it if it's for charity. It's just a bit of fun really."

Mrs Hardwick, who already has two great-great grandchildren, said her own children Maureen, 80, Janice, 74 and Robert, 62, had been very supportive.

She has lived in the village since 1933 and was the village postmistress for 35 years before retiring at the age of 72.

Chemists Concoct Part of Life's Recipe

For decades, scientists have argued about and pondered over whether biology began on our planet or arrived from above. If it started here, it presumably took millions of years for Earth to cook up life's essential molecules from scratch.

Now a team of chemists has computed a possible real-world recipe for one of these biomolecules, in research that suggests life started in a local pond rather than raining down from space.

Living cells are like tiny chemical factories, assembling long molecular chains such as DNA and proteins. But prior to life's emergence on Earth, these complex molecules must have come together by themselves, without the help of living cells.

"Just where these biomolecules originated isn’t known," said Paul von Rague Schleyer from the University of Georgia. "They could have formed from smaller molecules present on primitive Earth, either very slowly over millions of years or rapidly before the Earth cooled down."

A gray, grim landscape used to greet residents of the Northeastern United States each November, but autumn's riot of red, orange and yellow came late this year. Delayed fall foliage also occurred in Chicago and parts of Europe.

Some say droughts and a warm summer played a role, while others wonder more broadly about global warming. In fact, it's rising levels of carbon dioxide, not the warmer temperatures fueled by the greenhouse gas, that have been delaying the transformation of green leaves, at least in Europe for a few decades, a new study suggests.

In the past 30 years, leaf color change across Europe has gradually occurred later and later, with a delay of about 1.3 to 1.8 days per decade. Like the early onset of spring blooms, this phenomenon has been explained as a result of Earth's rising temperatures.

But the correlation between rising temperatures and leaf color change, known as autumnal senescence, isn't as strong as it is for the spring bloom.

According to Carl Jung, what prevents people from becoming autonomous, fulfilled and ultimately happy is their refusal to open themselves to experiences that are new and unfamiliar, and thus potentially threatening to their sense of self. When we have passed from childhood to adolescence to adulthood, nature abandons us to the world of consciousness, which is to say, to culture. We are thus forced to say "goodbye to childlike unconsciousness and trust in nature." The question then arises, "What kind of person shall I then become in this strange new world?" Each of us must confront it.

As Jung sees it, people desire a life that is safe, uncomplicated, familiar and in many respects unchanging. But such a life is ultimately constricting: it forecloses the possibility of learning and evolving, and thus, of developing a "wider and higher consciousness."
