Description: I recently clean installed Windows XP on my laptop, and this meant that I had to re-install all the essential software that I use. It also presented an opportunity to write a posting about how you can outfit your computer with all the essential (and non-essential) software you need using strictly 100% freeware and/or open source titles.This posting could have been titled any of the following:

How to never use a paid program again (aside from Windows).

53 essential freeware programs that can take care of the majority of your computing needs.

I am writing this from the perspective of myself clean-installing Windows and re-installing all the software I find to be essential afterwards. This post took a long time to write, please Digg and/or Stumble it ;).

Pre-installation: before reformatting my hard drive, I used the following programs:

The Western perception of Iranian women is that they live difficult, oppressed lives. Yet these pictures taken by the British photographer Olivia Arthur show Teheran's young women to be independent, party-loving, and leading surprisingly liberal lives.

Fatima is 11 years old and lives in a poor neighbourhood on the outskirts of Teheran with her mother and three aunts. Her father was a drug addict and left the family.

The poster on the wall is of Fatima’s uncle, a local wedding DJ who plays ‘cheesy Iranian pop music’

Edyanita lives in Teheran and is Christian. She is a graphic design student

The Christian community in Iran has a special legal status – Christians are permitted to drink alcohol and dance so long as they are not in the company of Muslims.

Temple built 4,000 years ago unearthed in Peru

LIMA (Reuters) - A 4,000-year-old temple filled with murals has been unearthed on the northern coast of Peru, making it one of the oldest finds in the Americas, a leading archaeologist said on Saturday.

The temple, inside a larger ruin, includes a staircase that leads up to an altar used for fire worship at a site scientists have called Ventarron, said Peruvian archaeologist Walter Alva, who led the dig.

It sits in the Lambayeque valley, near the ancient Sipan complex that Alva unearthed in the 1980s. Ventarron was built long before Sipan, about 2,000 years before Christ, he said.

"It's a temple that is about 4,000 years old," Alva, director of the Museum Tumbas Reales (Royal Tombs) of Sipan, told Reuters by telephone after announcing the results of carbon dating at a ceremony north of Lima sponsored by Peru's government.

"What's surprising are the construction methods, the architectural design and most of all the existence of murals that could be the oldest in the Americas," he said.

When the last episode of the Sopranos was broadcast this year, finishing with a sudden cut to black and silence, many baffled viewers assumed there was a fault with the signal.

We live in a society with a growing aversion to the emptiness that comes not just with silence but, more generally, with a fear of not knowing what to say.

Silence is golden, but it's under threat in a world where as business booms and prosperity looms, noise is growing.

But there was a time when it was said that a true friend is someone with whom you can sit in complete silence, without a hint of embarrassment or need to fill the space.
