The so-called ‘combination therapy’ prevents HIV from mutating and spreading, allowing patients to rebuild their immune system to the same levels as the rest of the population.

This thin-section transmission electron micrograph depicted the ultrastructural details of two "human immunodeficiency virus" (HIV) virus particles, or virions. They grow into adults who may be the great shapers of humanity, or succumb to the tragedy of their isolation. Education really should pay more than lip service to the 'gifted child'.

Clip Source: giftedkids.about.com

The emotional overexcitability is probably the most significant of the five overexcitabilities. It is most easily recognized by parents of gifted children because these children display heightened and intense emotions and emotional responses to events and experiences.

Children with this OE have the capacity for great emotional depth. They develop strong attachments to people, places, and things. Because of their emotional intensity, they are often accused of over-reacting or being melodramatic. However, the emotions they feel are real. The molehills to them are truly mountains.

The emotional OE is also manifested in a deep concern for others, as well as self-criticism and anxiety.

The depression that those with emotional OE often experience is existential depression, which means that they become depressed over issues concerning the basic questions

They can also feel a deep sense of responsibility, which can lead to feelings of failure and guilt.

they tend to be highly self-critical.

Tags: gifted, intelligence, depression, anxiety oe syndrome

<clipSource>http://giftedkids.about.com/od/gifted101/qt/emotional_oe.htm</clipSource>

The Mind Shapes the Brain

clipped by: abailart
clipper's remarks: "The mind is its own place" (John Milton)

Clip Source: books.google.com

A landmark work that offers new answers to one of the oldest mysteries in human thought: the connection between mind and brain. Conventional science has long held the position that "the mind" is merely an illusion, a side effect of electrochemical activity in the physical brain. Now comes a major work, grounded in two decades of research, that argues exactly the opposite: that the mind has a life of its own.

our emerging understanding of adult plasticity -- the brain's ability to be rewired not just in childhood, but throughout life, a trait only recently established by scientists. But in this paradigm-shifting work, Schwartz and Begley take neuroplasticity one critical step further.

by actively focusing their attention away from negative behaviors and toward more positive ones, Schwartz's patients were using their minds to reshape their brains.

self-directed neuroplasticity in quantum physics

its connections with the ancient practice of mindfulness in Buddhist tradition.

Tags: neurplasticity. ocd, mind-brain

<clipSource>http://books.google.com/books?id=5RlDm8d_2AsC&pg=PP1&ots=BG1eTHHiHf&dq=%22the+mind+and+the+brain%22&sig=-v5Qm_vgkLF1LsNSHuh5lQPigF4</clipSource>

Ladybugs take Manhattan

clipped by: ljsdesign
clipper's remarks: "Plus, if one buys into a common superstition, the 720,000 ladybugs should bring a torrent of good luck."

Clip Source: www.msnbc.msn.com

It sounds like a horror movie: 720,000 ladybugs on the attack in Manhattan.

n this real life story, however, the red-and-black bugs have been unleashed on the 80-acre grounds of one of New York's biggest apartment complexes with a mission: eat pests infesting the neatly landscaped property.

The ladybugs from Bozeman, Mont., arrived at the Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village complex on Manhattan's East Side on Thursday afternoon, packed in boxes shipped by a natural gardening company.

From mesh bags filled with wood shavings, groundskeepers scattered them in clusters of 72,000 per box.
