1. To join two independent clauses, use a comma followed by a conjunction, a semicolon alone, or a semicolon followed by a sentence modifier.

2. Use commas to bracket nonrestrictive phrases, which are not essential to the sentence's meaning.

3. Do not use commas to bracket phrases that are essential to a sentence's meaning.

4. When beginning a sentence with an introductory phrase or an introductory (dependent) clause, include a comma.

5. To indicate possession, end a singular noun with an apostrophe followed by an "s". Otherwise, the noun's form seems plural.

6. Use proper punctuation to integrate a quotation into a sentence. If the introductory material is an independent clause, add the quotation after a colon. If the introductory material ends in "thinks," "saying," or some other verb indicating expression, use a comma.

7. Make the subject and verb agree with each other, not with a word that comes between them.

8. Be sure that a pronoun, a participial phrase, or an appositive refers clearly to the proper subject.

9. Use parallel construction to make a strong point and create a smooth flow.

10. Use the active voice unless you specifically need to use the passive.

11. Omit unnecessary words.

George Bush goes to a primary school to talk to the kids to get a little PR. After his talk he offers question time. One little boy puts up his hand and George asks him his name. “Stanley,” responds the little boy. “And what is your question, Stanley?” asks ol’ Dubya.

“I have 4 questions” the kid responds.

“First, why did the USA invade Iraq without the support of the UN?”
“Second, why are you President when Al Gore got more votes?”
“Third, whatever happened to Osama Bin Laden?”
“Fourth, why are we so worried about gay-marriage when 1/2 of all Americans don’t have health insurance?”

Just then, the bell rings for recess. George Bush informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess. When they resume George says, “OK, where were we? Oh, that’s right question time. Who has a question?”

Another little boy puts up his hand. George points him out and asks him his name. “Steve” the kid responds. “And what is your question, Steve?” el presidente asks.

“Actually, I have 6 questions” the kid responds.

Okay peeps, I’m sure most of you know how to use Limewire and Bittorrent these days. But, I’ll bet you haven’t used Google to perform a quick Mp3 search for the nagging song that’s been stuck in your head all day. The truth is that Google can be used to conduct a search for almost any file type, including Mp3s, PDFs, and videos. This functionality has been available for a long time, but most users haven’t caught on to it. So here’s a quick example of how to use Google to search for Mp3s. It’s like turning Google into the Napster of 2000.

The following is a Google search string for searching open web directories containing downloadable Nirvana music files. Substitute the term Nirvana in the search string for any other band of your liking. You can always bookmark the search result for future use.

With some very slight modifications the same search string can easily be used to search for ebooks in DOC and PDF format:

Those Who Read Fiction Better at Reading People

A study published in the Journal of Research in Personality and led by Raymond Mar, a doctoral candidate in psychology at the University of Toronto, found that people who read narrative fiction often have improved social abilities, while for those who read non-fiction, the opposite holds true.

"All stories are about people and their interactions -- romance, tragedy, conflict," says Mar. "Stories often force us to empathize with characters who are quite different from us, and this ability could help us better understand the many kinds of people we come across in the real world."

The participants were asked to identify fiction and non-fiction authors from a long list of names (which included non-authors). Research has shown that the more authors a person identifies, the more the person reads.

They were then tested on measures of social awareness and empathy (such as recognizing a person's emotions from seeing only a picture of the person's eyes). The study found that:

People who frequently read narrative fiction scored higher on tests of both empathy (the ability to understand and identify with another person's feelings) and social acumen (the ability to make quick judgments of people and situations).

Frequent reading of non-fiction was associated with poorer empathy and social acumen.

The researchers developed two theories to explain why reading fiction may be good for social skills. First, it exposes people to examples of the way people behave socially. Second, fiction readers practice inferring people's intentions and closely watching their relationships.

How to Write Good

Always avoid alliteration.

Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

Avoid cliches like the plague—they're old hat.

Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.

Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.

Parenthetical words however must be enclosed in commas.

It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.

One should never generalize.

Don't be redundant; don't use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous.

It behooves you to avoid archaic expressions.

Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.

Don't use commas, that, are not, necessary.

Never use a big word when a diminutive alternative would suffice.

Subject and verb always has to agree.

Be more or less specific.

Use youre spell chekker to avoid mispeling and to catch typograhpical errers.

Don't never use no double negatives.

Poofread carefully to see if you any words out.

Eschew obfuscation.

Don't indulge in sesquipedalian lexicological constructions.

Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.

Avoid trendy locutions that sound flaky.

Take the bull by the hand and avoid mixing metaphors.

If you reread your work, you can find on rereading a great deal of repetition can be by rereading and editing.

And always be sure to finish what
