My obsession with ancient Roman history is still alive and kicking! I simply can't get enough of it... I have bought couple of more books on the subject, including The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History, a re-visit to one of History's most complex enigma.

Where (the Western) Roman Empire ends, there is another millenium of the Byzanthine Empire for me to get my teeth into!

I discovered these series of free lectures by accident while browsing iTunes. Lars Brownworth's narrative is simply great, well structured and and a joy to listen to.

Hey cool site! I re-discovered it last night while trawling through my bookmarks. What struck me was the speed at which clips are being loaded following the matches. Theo Walcot's first goal at the Croatia v England last night was already on the site during the second half of the game!

Well, folks, I must admit, I have been disappointed with the YouTube podcast tool I posted previously. Despite my earlier enthusiasm, the tool is not reliable. After some Google search, I found some nice tricks and web tools to make your YouTube experience more productive:

1. Paul Thurrott points out to a superb tip in making each YouTube you view in high quality format by appending the expression "&fmt=18".

2. The Google blog has a neat trick to download each viewable clip as an mp4 file. Simply click drag the bookmarklet 'Get YouTube Video' to your toolbar. When you want to download a YouTube video, click on the bookmarklet and you should see a new option with a link ' Download as MP4'.

Fascinating...Addictomatic lets you type a query and then instead of displaying the results from the entire web, it shows the results from certain other sites like some top social media sites, in a single page.

You could use this as a portal of news on a particular subject. The data loading is fast.

What?! Someone did not love this action-packed blockbuster? Blasphemy!

I eventually watched the movie everybody is talking about last Friday. I gave a lot of thought whether I should write a review ...Well why not? I have been actively watching movies for over 35 years so I do feel I have an opinion to share.

Hey, I like this...I was fed up of sending so many emails to my non-tech friends explaining bitorrent, how it works and so on. Now, Torrent2Exe takes torrent download links (the kind you'd normally pass to your favorite BitTorrent client) and creates tiny .exe programs that do all the download work for whoever double-clicks them. Love it!

Web Surfing: How I overcame information overload

When I fire up my browser in the morning, I am faced with 60 RSS channels, each listing an average of 7 story items. That is potentially 420 web stories to read, though (thankfully!) this is highly unlikely, as the majority of websites will not update more than a couple of times in the space of 24 hours.

Anyway, the big question is what is the best way to deal with this information overload, especially if you have a day job and you have only a coffee break first thing in the morning and a meagre 45 minutes at lunchtime?

I know...I know...Star Wars 30th anniversary is an 'old' story now but I felt quite nostalgic this morning when I saw this excellent post on Flickr. As a genre collector, I was compelled to bookmark this site for future reference. The author brings not only expertise in the movie's memorabilia but also provides some interesting facts young fans should know about the fateful year 1977...And of course, the photo montage is indeed superb!

O yes...I like this. Just when there is a flurry of eBay auctions I need to bid for, here is a handy tool to easily set (by entering Item # or URL) reminder in my Google Calendar for ending auctions. Superb.

In the late Nineties, I very much enjoyed a superb BBC TV documentary called I Caesar. This was a beautifully crafted series of features (6 parts) on a selection of major Roman Emperors including Julius Caesar, though the latter was not an Emperor but gave the title to subsequent rulers.

The Roman Emperors always fascinated me, the intrigue, their power and their madness.

Less than a year ago, I came across Imperium by Robert Harris. A so-called political thriller recounting the life of Cicero, Roman senator and Consul, before the rise of Julius Caesar. This led me to find out more about Roman Republic before the age of the Emperors: I recently finished a book called Rubicon by Tom Holland...

While perusing the DVD section of Amazon.com a couple of years ago, I came across a review of my all-time favourite science TV series Cosmos by Carl Sagan. One of the reviewer rightly pointed out that Carl Sagan ignored the impact the Muslim Scholar between the great years of ancient Greek discoveries and the Renaissance period.

I found the review so compelling and enlightening that I had share this. I went a step further and sourced the named individuals to Wikipedia.

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus): Antiviral and immunity-enhancer. If you tend to get every bug that goes around during the winter, you can build up your resistance to disease by taking this Chinese tonic herb on a daily basis. It's safe to take indefinitely.

Garlic (Allium sativum): Antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer and cardiovascular tonic par excellence. The best home remedy for colds is to eat two cloves of raw garlic at the onset of symptoms. Chop or crush the cloves to release the allicin (a sulfur compound with strong antibiotic effects) and put them on a sandwich or swallow them in apple sauce. Don't chew and the garlic won't stay on your breath.

Seven gold medals of the 7th British Invention Show have brightly adorned the Iranian inventors at the UK's largest innovation expo.

Iranian inventors won seven gold, six silver and four bronze medals of the British Invention Show, grabbing the fifth place at the event.

Entries included a diverse array of unique ideas from ice blasting to an engine that runs on air. From ray absorber material and football skate board machine to production of electricity from sea waves, the Iranian inventors displayed their brilliant ideas at the show for the benefit of humanity.
