Sound Art Concert in Second Life

That concept is anathema to the listening rules of classical music, where the music is understood as the sum of its movements. The audience at a traditional concert has a static relationship to sound. They quietly sit for a discrete amount of time, immersed in a bath of sound waves, as physically passive receivers of music.

Sound art is not quite so static, and this is why the Philharmonic’s performance was more installation than classical performance. During the Second Life concert, avatars listened while removing their clothing, gyrating in the aisles, conversing with other concert-goers, or reading newspapers. As in all installation art, part of the point for the Second Life show was that the audience and its antics were an integral part of the performance, changing the way that the music was heard and experienced.

It's not piracy when kids swap music over the Internet using Napster or Gnutella or Freenet or iMesh or beaming their CDs into a My.MP3.com or MyPlay.com music locker. It's piracy when those guys that run those companies make side deals with the cartel lawyers and label heads so that they can be "the labels' friend," and not the artists'.

Recording artists have essentially been giving their music away for free under the old system, so new technology that exposes our music to a larger audience can only be a good thing. Why aren't these companies working with us to create some peace?

There were a billion music downloads last year, but music sales are up. Where's the evidence that downloads hurt business? Downloads are creating more demand.

Why is the RIAA suing the companies that are stimulating this new demand? What's the point of going after people swapping cruddy-sounding MP3s? Cash! Cash they have no intention of passing onto us, the writers of their profits.

Violinst Travels World Busking For Children's Music Education

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Concert violinist David Juritz has performed in many of the world's greatest halls as a soloist, guest artist and concertmaster of London's famed Mozart Players.

The violinist left his London home on June 9 and has since traveled the globe as a street performer, raising money to fund music education for some of the world's poorest children.

I remembered saying to somebody, 'I bet you could busk your way around the world if you put your mind to it.' That's all it took, only about a minute's thought. If I'd given it four or five, I'd never have done it.

In Montevideo, Uruguay, Juritz feared street children might rob him but instead they gave him what money they had. In Singapore, Juritz played in an area inhabited largely by immigrant construction workers where an observer who looked anything but wealthy gave him 5 Singapore dollars ($3.30)

Music Industry Targets Music Sharing On Usenet

Oct 17th, 2007 | NEW YORK -- The recording industry is going after an old-fashioned online bulletin board system called Usenet, filing a lawsuit against one provider on grounds it allows users to illegally distribute copyright-protected music.

Usenet has its roots in the late 1970s and, unlike the scores of Web-based bulletin boards that followed, it runs over a dispersed collection of computer servers worldwide with no one company or individual in control.

Federal copyright law offers online providers some immunity from copyright lawsuits over their users' activities.

The lack of a central administrator didn't stop the music labels from targeting Usenet. They went after one specific provider, Usenet.com Inc. of Fargo, N.D.

In their lawsuit, filed last week in U.S. District Court in New York, the labels accused the Usenet company of touting its service as a haven for sharing music in such formats as MP3.
