Contractors fired for hanging noose at company facility

HOUSTON — An oil-field services company that banned four contract workers for hanging nooses at a factory has contacted state and federal authorities for guidance handling the cases, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.

FMC Technologies disclosed the noose-hangings Tuesday, saying it had permanently barred the contract workers from all its facilities. The first incident — which involved two men and a woman — occurred about a month ago. The second, involving one man, was last week.

In both incidents, nooses were displayed in a factory at the company's Houston headquarters.

The incidents are among a number of reported noose-hangings around the country, including high-profile incidents at a high school in Jena, La., and Columbia University.

What local officials are calling an isolated event that led to charges against a high school student in Gurnee is apparently the latest in a series of incidents across the country causing heightened concern in the racially explosive aftermath of the Jena 6 case in Louisiana.

A Warren Township High School student was charged with disorderly conduct for making "racially charged" statements to two female students, police said. The student drove into a campus parking lot with a noose hanging from his rearview mirror and a Confederate flag displayed in his vehicle, officials said.

"I think what all of these incidents reflect -- from Jena to the reaction to Jena -- is the worsening of race relations in America," said Mark Potok, a hate-group expert at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala. "What one would hope is that an event like Jena starts a real dialogue that takes us forward and not backward."

Noose Found on Utility Pole at Anniston Army Depot

ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) - Authorities are trying to determine who tied a noose to a utility pole in the industrial area of the
Anniston Army Depot. A passerby spotted the noose yesterday at about 10 a.m.

Army officials said in a statement that an investigation is underway. So far there is no word on any suspect or suspects or a possible motive. Depot leaders said prompt disciplinary action will be taken to make sure inappropriate activities do not occur again on the depot.

PITTSBURGH -- The Port Authority of Allegheny County wants to know who left a threat at one of its garages.

Officials said a black baby doll, with a racist threat, was found hanging Monday in a hallway at PAT's East Liberty garage. The threat was directed at an unspecified black woman.

A PAT spokesman said the agency is working to find out who is responsible.

CRANBERRY, Pa. -- A Butler County Verizon worker said she's the target of a racial threat.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, claimed someone left a noose around a doll's neck with a note saying she didn't deserve a promotion. The doll was left on her desk in an inner-office envelope at the Verizon Wireless complex in Cranberry.

The alleged victim said, “How is this happening to me? Why does someone think I don't have the right to earn a living just like them? I was horrified. I never felt unsafe at my job. Now I just feel unsafe.”

A spokesperson released a statement: "We are aware of this allegation. We take it very seriously, and we are investigating it now."

Nooses Left at O'Hara Township Work Site

O'HARA TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A third possible incident of racial workplace intimidation in the Pittsburgh area this week was reported on Thursday morning.

Errol Madyun told WTAE Channel 4 Action News reporter Ari Hait that he found a noose on Wednesday at the construction site where he's working in O'Hara Township.

Madyun said the site had been great to work on, without even a hint of trouble, until this incident.

Madyun said there was also a noose waiting for another African-American man on the job site, and they both notified the job superintendent.

"Soon as you told him, he should've did something right away," Madyun said.

But Madyun said he and the other man who found a noose did not get the reaction they expected from the superintendent.

"He said it was a joke," Madyun said. "I don't see the humor in this. I think it is very, very serious."

"These are going to be our future leaders. The last thing you want are your leaders not being tolerant," Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, told CNN before heading for the academy with Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen.

A 6-inch string tied as a noose was found in an African-American cadet's sea bag in July while he was serving aboard the historic tall ship Eagle.

And during race-relations training in August -- set up in response to the first incident -- a white female civil rights instructor found a small noose in her office at the academy in New London, Connecticut.

"The noose, to African Americans, is a symbol of hatred and it takes us back to the times when African-American people were being hung from trees for no reason at all," Cummings said. "And so it's a very offensive kind of thing."

Noose Found on Professor's Door at Columbia University

The noose was found Tuesday, hanging from a door at Columbia's Teachers College.

The apparent target, Madonna Constantine, 44, is a professor of psychology and education at Teachers College. She co-wrote the book "Addressing Racism: Facilitating Cultural Competence in Mental Health and Educational Settings."

The student paper reported the noose's discovery came on the heels of several recent politically and racially charged events at Columbia, including the controversial visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

It also follows news reports of racial tensions in Jena, Louisiana, that attracted national attention. In the "Jena 6" case, white students in the small town hung nooses from a schoolyard tree after black students sat under it. Marchers last month protested how authorities handled the cases of six black teenagers accused of beating a white student at the same school, several weeks after the noose incident.

Websites with anti-Jena 6 rally messages on them are popping up all over the net.
One man is selling nooses for ten dollars each while another has listed all of the names of the Jena 6 teenagers as well as their parents addresses and phone numbers on it.
An internet radio host says his message is not of hate but of pro-white.
Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco issued a statement Saturday saying: "Harassing families involved in the legal issues in Jena can not and will not be tolerated. Public attacks on private citizens done out of ignorance and hatred is appalling, and anyone who stoops to such unspeakable persecution will be investigated and subject to the full penalty of law. I have asked law enforcement agencies to investigate this matter, and as Governor I will do everything in my power to put a stop to these cowardly threats to Louisiana citizens."
