Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, the former top commander in Iraq, has issued a devastating critique of the “incompetent strategic leadership within our national leaders” in planning and executing the Iraq war, which he called a “catastrophic failure.” Sanchez also warned that the president’s “surge” might “stave off defeat” but will not lead to victory.

“After more than fours years of fighting, America continues its desperate struggle in Iraq without any concerted effort to devise a strategy that will achieve victory in that war-torn country or in the greater conflict against extremism,” Mr. Sanchez said, at a gathering here of military reporters and editors.

“There was been a glaring and unfortunate display of incompetent strategic leadership within our national leaders,” he said, adding later in his remarks that civilian officials have been “derelict in their duties” and guilty of a “lust for power.”

While politicians of both parties have repeatedly denounced Alberto Gonzales for public mendacity and abuse of office, a few of them finally have stepped up to do what must be done. On July 31, Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., and several colleagues—including four former prosecutors—filed a resolution directing the House Judiciary Committee to open an impeachment investigation of the attorney general.

The logic of Inslee’s initiative is inescapable to anyone who has been listening to the congressional complaints about Gonzales. If legislators from both branches and both parties believe that the attorney general has repeatedly deceived Congress and the public about matters of importance, if they believe that he has committed those deceptions under oath in the Capitol, and if they believe that the president will do nothing to remedy these wrongs, then impeachment is their only serious response.

Cheney Escapes Cross-Examination

The lawyer of alleged perjurer “Scooter” Libby revealed Tuesday that neither his client nor the vice president will testify for the defense. Dick Cheney would have been the first vice president to testify at a criminal trial, open to a range of uncomfortable questions from the prosecution.

BBC:

The prospect that Mr Cheney might take the stand in defence of Mr Libby had prompted great excitement.

But Mr Libby’s lawyer, Theodore Wells, said on Tuesday he would not call the vice-president - after suggesting in December that he would.

Mr Wells also said Mr Libby would not take the stand - prompting Judge Reggie Walton to ask Mr Libby to rise and confirm he was giving up the right to defend himself.

Mainstream Media Try to Hide the Impeachment Question Part 2 Poll Results

The Poll

The impeachment question was part of a Zogby International poll conducted early last week, and released on Thursday.

It found that Bush’s job approval ratings had slipped a point from the previous week, to 43 percent.

But the jaw-dropper was that 42 percent said they would favor impeachment proceedings if it is found that the president misled the nation about his reasons for going to war with Iraq.

Zogby noted: "While half (50%) of respondents do not hold this view, supporters of impeachment outweigh opponents in some parts of the country.

"Among those living in the Western states, a 52% majority favors Congress using the impeachment mechanism while just 41% are opposed; in Eastern states, 49% are in favor and 45% opposed. In the South, meanwhile, impeachment is opposed by three-in-five voters (60%) and supported by just one-in-three (34%); in the Central/Great Lakes region, 52% are opposed and 38% in favor....

Pollingreport.com offers the results broken down by party. Among Democrats, 59 percent answered the impeachment question affirmatively -- as well as 25 percent of Republicans.

Shailagh Murray of The Washington Post made the poll results the third item in the paper’s Sunday politics column: "Even the pollster couldn’t believe his eyes. ’It was much higher than I expected,’ John Zogby said of the 42 percent....

"By comparison, in October 1998, as the House moved to impeach President Bill Clinton over the Monica S. Lewinsky scandal, a Zogby poll found that 39 percent of voters supported the House action, while 56 percent opposed it....

"Zogby said the hypothetical question ’reveals just how badly divided this country is over the war,’ but also that people may be more comfortable with the idea of throwing a president out of office....

The latest poll shows more support for impeaching Bush now, than there was for impeaching Clinton when Congress did so in 1998. But the mainstream wimpmedia are reluctant to report on this. Here are portions of an article that managed to sneak into the Washington Post.

by Dan Froomkin More than four in 10 Americans, according to a recent Zogby poll, say that if President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment.

But you wouldn’t know it from following the news. Only three mainstream outlets that I can find made even cursory mention of the poll last week when it came out.

Nevertheless, could there be anything that 42 percent of Americans agree on that the media cares about so little?

But they also suggest an appetite for more investigation into Bush’s reasons for war and specifically -- in light of the assertions in the Downing Street memos -- whether his public rationales were in fact at all like his private rationales.

One topic for further inquiry, for instance, could be whether in private conversations Bush expressed the same kind of reticence about war that he advertised publicly. Some evidence -- stories like this one in Time, for instance, which quotes Bush saying in March 2002: ’[Expletive] Saddam. we’re taking him out.’ -- suggests otherwise.

Was Bush motivated more by personal animosity toward Saddam Hussein than by a post-Sept. 11 desire to protect America from a grave threat? Did he exaggerate that threat? At what point was war inevitable?

Those are not settled questions. And evidently quite a few Americans would like to see some accountability if Bush deceived them.

clipper's remarks: Evidence from the Scooter Libby trial shows that the Valerie Plame outing is small potatoes in comparison to the deliberate fabrication of evidence that led the United States into an ill-conceived war. Did Bush know that he lied to the Nation when he claimed in his State of the Union speech that Saddam Hussein planned to obtain enriched uranium from Niger? I've often wondered why Bush rewarded Tenet with the Medal of Freedom when at the time he was considered to have failed in his job to prevent 9/11 and the supposed weapons of mass destruction had not been found. An impeachment trial is needed to answer many questions about the conduct of this Administration.

The Libby case testimony, centered on the chicanery of the vice president, certainly suggests that impeachable offenses occurred at the highest level of the White House. Just how conscious the president was of the deceits conducted under his authority, what he knew and when he knew it, is precisely what an impeachment trial would determine.

Consider the testimony concerning White House use of former CIA Director George Tenet in the cover-up of the president’s distortions. The record is unmistakably clear that the CIA and other intelligence sources warned the White House before the president’s speech not to make the bogus Niger claim, and that the reference had been voided out in a previous speech. Yet, after Ambassador Joseph Wilson exposed this fact more than a year after the invasion, Cheney orchestrated a new deception to shift the blame to Tenet.

That is the smoking-gun revelation in the testimony of Cheney’s former spokeswoman, Cathie Martin, a Harvard-educated lawyer who still works in the White House. Her word is that of a sophisticated and top-level White House insider and, as described by the Washington Post, one that offers a devastating glimpse into the moral depravity of this administration:

“At length, Martin explained how she, Libby and Deputy National Security Adviser Steve Hadley worked late into the night writing a statement to be issued by George Tenet in 2004 in which the CIA boss would take blame for the bogus claim in Bush’s State of the Union address that Iraq was seeking nuclear material in Africa. After ‘delicate’ talks, Tenet agreed to say the CIA ‘approved’ the claim and ‘I am responsible’—but even that disappointed Martin, who had wanted Tenet to say that ‘we did not express any doubts about Niger.’ ” Tenet later was awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
