(This event is different from the National Prayer Breakfast, held outside the White House gates every year on the first Thursday of February.)

President Obama opted not to have a service in the White House this year.

"Prayer is something that the president does every day," explained White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, adding that Obama will sign a proclamation to recognize the day. "I think the president understands, in his own life and in his family's life, the role that prayer plays."

President Truman signed the first National Prayer Day proclamation, and President Reagan made it a permanent occasion. Protect the fetus, but kill the adult if it's homosexual. Oh, Prince of Peace ...

Clip Source: blog.newsweek.com

Rick Warren

on the defensive again, this time for his affiliation with Martin Ssempa, a Ugandan pastor who has endorsed proposed legislation in Uganda that makes certain homosexual acts punishable by life in prison or even, in some cases, death. Ssempa has made appearances at Saddleback and has been embraced warmly by Warren and his wife, Kay

Warren won't go so far as to condemn the legislation itself. A request for a broader reaction to the proposed Ugandan antihomosexual laws generated this response: "The fundamental dignity of every person, our right to be free, and the freedom to make moral choices are gifts endowed by God, our creator. However, it is not my personal calling as a pastor in America to comment or interfere in the political process of other nations

As a pastor, my job is to encourage, to support. The last fortune cookie I got in a restaurant said, “You Will Know the Future In Time,” which I always suspected, and the Truth is that Time will make truth irrelevant because by the time you find it you won’t have any feelings about it. About truth, I mean. Time is truth and there is no truth in time, as John Keats never said, but time-keeper is the best job you can have. This is my job, I’m a watch with feelings.

the poet who’s so in the avantgarde herm will never have to write anything. So in time you’ll find a stash of my letters dated in the future that will be well past by the time you find them, and they’ll say things like, “I told you so,” and “If you say that again it will be a quote.” Happy New Year

Tags: andrea codrescu, exuisite corpse, time, poetry, prose, fortune cookies, truth

<clipSource>http://www.corpse.org/</clipSource>

Understanding Chinese, birds and Glaswegians

clipped by: zizzy
clipper's remarks: From PRI (Public Radio International). Before the summit Diouf said that the FAO budget does not permit it to do much alone about such a huge problem, pointing out that individual states, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the regional development banks are the ones with the serious money.

Furthermore, a large portion of the hunger problem is related to unfair international trade conditions - caused in part by First World support of domestic agriculture - where the FAO has no role. It is up to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to engineer a deal to iron out these distortions.

Clip Source: www.ipsnews.net

At best it reflects the limits of the U.N. and its flagship body in the fight against hunger, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), activists say.

At worst, they say it shows wealthy countries’ leaders lack the political will to really to put their backs into solving a problem that - no matter how unjust and scandalous, in a world with more than enough to feed everyone - generally does not directly affect the voters who put them into office.

Either way it is probably bad news for the 1.02 billion people, almost one sixth of the global population, who go to bed every night with empty stomachs.

Eliminating hunger from the face of Earth requires 44 billion dollars of official development assistance (ODA) per year to be invested in infrastructure, technology and modern inputs,

a small amount if we consider the 365 billion dollars of agriculture producer support in OECD countries in 2007

consider the 1,340 billion dollars of military expenditures by the world in the same yea

Tags: world hunger, development food and agriculture organisation, world trade organizations, united nations, failure, 1.02 billion hungry people

<clipSource>http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=49299</clipSource>

China: Postscript to Obama Visit: When Bejing Blinked

clipped by: zizzy
clipper's remarks:
Advocating the G2 is in fact an American strategy, not China’s" said Shi Yinhong, an expert on international relations at Renmin University in Beijing.
