BEIJING, Feb 16 (AP) -- China plans to recruit villagers who live near the Great Wall to guard against vandalism that has damaged sections of the country's most famous landmark, a news report said Thursday.

Patrols will focus on a 630-kilometer (390-mile) stretch of wall north of the Chinese capital, the official China Daily newspaper said.

Near Badaling, north of Beijing, almost every brick on a popular section of the centuries-old wall has been carved with people's names and other graffiti, the report said.

"Saturated tourism is often blamed for damage to the Oriental epitome of ancient Chinese civilization," the newspaper said.

The earliest sections of the wall were built more than 20 centuries ago to guard against Mongols and other invaders.

The government also is considering a buffer zone to keep the public away from some sections, the China Daily said, citing Yu Ping, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage.

I received an email this morning from Ken Carroll of ChinesePod telling me that China has blocked Technorati at the great firewall - it would appear that Technorati will no longer be available to anyone to use in China.

Co-incidentally, when I interviewed Technorati’s CEO David Sifry on the PodLeaders show a couple of weeks back, Ken submitted the following question for David -

Do you have a China strategy? What do you foresee there in terms of blogging and blog search?

Does this mean Technorati isn’t censoring search results into China like Google, MSN, Yahoo are? And if this is the case, will Technorati now have to start doing the Chinese government’s censorship job for them if they wish to be seen in China once more?

I have posted about this topic in the past and, in my naive opinion, unless all the search engines come together to formulate a common China strategy, China will continue to pick them off one by one.

UPDATE:
I see the Mad About Shanghai blog is also reporting that Technorati is being blocked in China.

Who’s the web2.0 killer? Nobody but Chinese government.

After blocking WikipediA, Blogspot, Technorati, etc, Feedburner, another wonderful web service may be blocked in some areas of China.

This morning when I got up and want to burn my feed of my English Blog through Feedburner, I suddenly found that I cant access the site. I tried TOR (an anonymous internet communication system) later and everything is fine. Then I asked some of my friends in China. Some of them are in the same trouble, other lucky guys have no such problem (obviously I’m not one in those lucky). So I cant say that our Great FireWall has already blocked Feedburner, but I’m sure that some ISP did.

zephyrgong
clipper's remarks: They're top 10 widely spreadly elves in Chinese folklore, sorry it's too hard to translate their names to English, but the Chinese names are bellow:

狐仙(Fox spirits),龙女,夜叉(Yaksha),判官,牛头(Ox heads),马面(horse faces ),二郎(Erlang Shen ),七郎,刑天(Xing Tian),辟邪

I hope I can have time and ability to do some short description to each of them. There's already have a detailed list about Chinese mythology on Wikipedia(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_mythology), most of them have well described, but I think have some pictures will make more sense. The Chinese media have estimated that 1,000 children – some as young as eight years old – were drugged or kidnapped near train And bus stations and then sold to factory owners for as little as 500 yuan (about $70).

The children were forced to work as many as 14 hours a day in cruel conditions with little food. Some were beaten by their bosses. Others were burned by hot bricks as they worked. Some of the children have spent up to seven years in slavery.

Another worker, also mentally handicapped, was beaten to death with a hammer last year. The workers were forced to sleep on the ground and were not permitted to wash or change their clothes. Their bodies were covered with bruises and burns from the hot bricks.

The factory was owned by the son of the local Communist Party boss. He employed five guards and six dogs to prevent the workers from fleeing.

Tags: brick, factory, slaves, children, china

<clipSource>http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070614.wslaves0614/BNStory/International/home</clipSource>

Firefox Girl

clipped by: zephyrgong
clipper's remarks: People in big cities works a whole life, just for their own apartments.Furthermore, in China, when we say "buy a house",what we mean is buy the ownership for 70 years, after that the house has to give back to government. That's the policy.
<div border="2" style="margin-top: 10px; According to some BBS posts, Zou Tao was taken away by the public security bureau before he boarded a plane at Shenzhen Airport on May 11. Zou Tao's blog at Tianya has been shut down. The whereabouts of Zou Tao is unknown.

I have previously predicted such an outcome. It is a fool's dream to think that an individual's efforts can affect the huge interests with the real estate moguls and the government. Housing prices in Shenzhen and Beijing are extremely high, and there are signs that certain groups of buyers are speculating to take profit while the real estate developers are jacking up the prices. But there is nothing that we can do. Individually, we can refuse to buy. We can write essays to condemn this kind of behavior. But if we organize several tens of citizens to take certain actions against certain things, it would be anathema to the government. No matter how pure and good your motives are, you will be banned.

The "Not Buy House" movement originally appears to be directed against the bad real estate groups. In practice, it has touched upon the related interests of the government. Through auctioning off the land, the government obtains revenues. Obviously, the higher the price, the better off the government will be. If the developers have higher costs, they will seek higher returns for which the government will receive high tax revenues. Under this win-win situation for the government and developers, it was a fool's dream for Zou Tao to hope that housing prices will come down.

Zou Tao appears to have left Shenzhen now.
