HELSINKI -- Computer specialist Didier Stevens put up a simple text ad on the Internet offering downloads of a computer virus for people who did not have any.

He found as many as 409 people clicking on the ad saying "Is your PC virus-free? Get it infected here!" during a six-month ad campaign on Google's Adword, said the IT security expert.

There was no virus. It was a test showing how easily ads can be misused, Stevens said.

Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy or speculative fiction, which according to Wikipedia, denotes "works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used�usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England�but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date."

This steampunk modified Rhoads Jackson V guitar, called "The Villanizer", recently sold on ebay for $2,275, which I'd say is a bargain. Of course, it plays great, too.

What you see here is indeed an optical computer mouse called "The Bug". The cog for a scroll wheel makes a great touch.

What's the good of a steampunk mouse without a steampunk keyboard to go with it. This contraption was made by a different inventor.

Why not wear some steampunk specs to fit in with all this gadgetry.

The company doesn’t claim that the Q1 will replace your primary computer; neither will they give sales figures, except to say that they’ve sold as many of the original model in the first quarter of 2007 as they did in all of 2006. Samsung also seems to be pushing the idea that the Q1 Ultra is good for business applications, like transmitting maps or data collected in the field. The harshters at Gizmodo have already dismissed it “as a solution in search of a problem,” an admittedly unbeatable phrase: most of what I’d want to do on the road I’d want in a smaller device, like a Treo or Sidekick, and for anything else a small but more powerful laptop.

I suspect there is a market for the Q1 Ultra, but it’s modest. The real question is: once Wi-Max and 3.5G give us wireless ubiquity, will there be important tricks the Q1 Ultra can do that a cheaper device won’t be able to? My guess is not many.
