Zaporozhye-based Ivchenko-Progress — the large Ukrainian aircraft engine manufacturer — is expanding its cooperation with China. In its latest success, the company has been chosen as an engine supplier for the new L-15 advanced jet trainer being developed by China's AVIC II. For this application, Ivchenko-Progress will create a special supersonic version of its AI-222 powerplant, opening a new chapter for the engine family that already has been chosen for use on the new Russian Yak-130 trainer aircraft.

A Foldable Helicopter Invented by the Soviets

Say what you like about the Soviets, they still had ingenious engineers. Take a look at this helicopter. It's practically something you can shove inside your suitcase after you fly yourself to work. I mean, it literally only takes 10 minutes unfold to it.

The beautiful thing about it is that it ran on car fuel. Gassing this baby would probably take minimal effort. Too bad it was never actually flown — there wasn't a rotary piston engine found for it.

Still, why is it that I get the feeling that if this helicopter were ever to be taken seriously, it would revolutionize the world of transportation? Just a feeling, like I said.

Charles D. McKinley, 25, of Brooklyn, N.Y., had four weeks of vacation coming, so he decided to visit his parents in DeSoto, Texas. Rather than buy a plane ticket for $320, McKinley, a shipping clerk, packed himself into a shipping crate and air-expressed himself home, charging the fees to his employer. When the crate was delivered to his parents' front step, McKinley pushed out of the box and shook hands with the "shaken and frightened" delivery driver. The driver called the police. After an investigation by the FBI, the U.S. attorney, postal inspectors, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration, McKinley was charged as a stowaway, a federal misdemeanor. (Dallas Morning News) ...If he had only waited for the driver to leave, he would have been home free.
