A vast swath of the Pacific, twice the size of Texas, is full of a plastic stew that is entering the food chain. Scientists say these toxins are causing obesity, infertility...and worse.

Fate can take strange forms, and so perhaps it does not seem unusual that Captain Charles Moore found his life’s purpose in a nightmare. Unfortunately, he was awake at the time, and 800 miles north of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean.

It happened on August 3, 1997, a lovely day, at least in the beginning: Sunny. Little wind. Water the color of sapphires. Moore and the crew of Alguita, his 50-foot aluminum-hulled catamaran, sliced through the sea.

The UK could, says the government, build a tidal barrage across the river Severn, which would generate 5 per cent of the UK's electricity. Yet this will be fiercely opposed by environmentalists. The same is true of nuclear power, which is back in favour.

A lack of decisiveness and conviction pervades the detail of the white paper. A weak transport section gives no clue as to whether the government prefers hydrogen fuel or just more efficient petrol and diesel engines. Where the UK has a technological lead, as in wave power, there is no sign of urgency that the government is pushing to create world-beating products. An imaginative foreign company could easily steal a march.

Instead, the UK is hedging its bets and waiting to see which way the rest of the world will go. This is not the vision of a technological trendsetter. Blair's destination for the UK looks right, but how the country will get there is far from clear.

Have you heard about designer vaginas? Of course, since my poo has a natural Yves Saint Laurent look, I have no concerns.

But, I've been reading that a sizeable number of women are seriously distressed about the size of their honey pot. More particularly, it’s the wrapping. They don't like protruding labia.

And these ladies are going to plastic surgeons who accommodate them by replicating the coochie of a twelve-year-old girl. Often the patients bring pics of their ideal vagina.

Archaeologists digging in western Japan have excavated what they believe to be the oldest remains of a melon ever found,

Based on a radiocarbon analysis, researchers estimate the half-rounded piece of fruit to be about 2,100 years old,

The remains are believed to be the oldest of a melon that still has flesh on the rind,

Previously, the oldest such find was believed to be remains found in China that date back to the fourth century A.D.,

The melon might have been so well-preserved because it was in a vacuum-packed state in a wet layer below the ground, an environment hostile to microorganisms that might otherwise have broken down the remains

Melon seeds have been often found in archaeological digs around the country, but researchers rarely find the remains of melon flesh,

Moriyama is about 330 kilometers (205 miles) southwest of Tokyo.

A recent trip to South Africa reveals a land of stark contrast and an ever-growing need for hope.

South Africa is a story of great wealth and immense poverty—robust economies and faltering infrastructure—state-of-the-art healthcare and a widespread epidemic of AIDS—Mercedes-driving yuppies and endless intersections lined with beggars—peaceful, gated communities and rampant crime.

A large extraterrestrial object exploded over the heads of the first Americans about 13,000 years ago, wiping them out and making big mammals and other prehistoric creatures disappear, according to a new U.S. study.

Nine Hurricanes Forecast for Atlantic

With the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season a few hours away, researcher William Gray released his newest forecast Thursday still showing an expectation for 17 named storms and nine hurricanes, five of them intense.

Gray, based at Colorado State University, described it as a very active season. He said there was a 74 percent chance of a major hurricane making landfall somewhere on the U.S. coast.

There is a 50 percent chance of a major hurricane making landfall on the East Coast, including the Florida Peninsula, according to the new forecast; the long-term average is 31 percent.

The chance of a major hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast between the Florida Panhandle and Brownsville, Texas, is 49 percent; the long-term average is 30 percent. There is also an above-average chance of a major hurricane making landfall in the Caribbean, according to the forecast.

Worldwide the giraffe must be one of the most recognisable animals. They grow up to 5.5 meters in height and to get blood to these extremities giraffe have possibly the strongest heart of all animals. While lowering and lifting its head to drink water, the rush of blood to and from the brain would cause serious damage if there were not mechanisms in place to control it. At the base of the brain a network of spongy tissue, the "rete mirabile" collects the excessive flow of blood from the carotid artery when the head is lowered and normal blood pressure is maintained in the brain. The jugular veins have a series of one-way check valves to stop blood from rushing back to the brain when the head is lower than the heart.

All the veins and arteries in the giraffe's legs are situated close to the bones and the capillaries that reach the surface are very small. This prevents severe bleeding from superficial cuts and wounds.
