Chickens Are People Too!

clipper's remarks: *LOL* I've had lots of pet chickens. My last one, Molly was a fiery little "Red Dwarf" with an awesome attitude! She was queen of the roost even over all the cats. Aah, I loved that funny hen. *LOL*

Anyway! I'm not a vegan. I believe chickens are "meant" to be eaten by us, just as we one day will be food for others, be it worms or Azaleas. (or White Pointers, if you're an Aussie. Ha ha!) The point is respect. Treat animals with dignity and respect and be thankful for the nourishment they provide. We're all just part of the food chain. Don't waste or squander, but be thankful for the food you are lucky to have. (Not all are as lucky as us, to be able to eat every day.) Check out all the cool comments from fellow clippers on the clip about plants having feelings, for some really cool thoughts on consciousness and awareness and interconnectedness. Mind-expanding!

NY Times helps blur distinction between "pets" and "food animals"

While it appears that the profiled chickens came from a couple that uses the eggs of their birds, the reason this article ended up at AAFL and in The New York times is the author's marvelling over how chickens defy our rather limited knowledge of their behavior and personalities:

Whoever coined the phrase “dumb cluck” never met our chickens. All I had to do was open the refrigerator door and both would come running.

Not news to me or my constant readers, but I'm sure many of you will find the piece useful in disabusing your friends and families of their stereotypes about birds.

Please send the editor your letters in support of chickens, the most abused and consumed animal in America. This is a good time to remind readers of the arbitrary distinction between animals kept as pets and those turned into food, and to recommend a vegan diet as a way to eliminate this moral schizophrenia from their diets.

My dad has long departed since then, but every time I read these words Lincoln wrote to his son's teacher, they bring a tear to my eyes. Beautiful and sincere advice for anyone to follow.

clipper's remarks: Just an fyi...in a few hours, we'll be uploading a fairly big set of changes to the clipmrks site aimed primarily at achieving two things.

The first is making the site easier and more intuitive to navigate (get anywhere from anywhere in less clicks).

The second is a much greater ability to learn about and connect with other clippers on the site. This will be a continuing driving force behind much of our development in June. The first stages will be introduced tonight.

The world is now on track to experience more catastrophic damages from climate change than in the worst-case scenario forecast by international experts, scientists have warned.

The research, published in a prestigious US science journal, shows that between 2000 and 2004 the rate of increase in global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels was three times greater than in the 1990s.

That is faster than even the worst-case scenario modelled by the world's leading scientists in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, published over recent months, because the updated emissions figures were not available in time to be included.

The climbing emissions mean that average global temperatures are now on track to rise by more than four degrees this century - enough to thaw vast areas of arctic permafrost and leave about 3 billion people suffering from water shortages, including in Australia.

Fluoride, added to the water supply of many cities and counties and sold by WalMart in its nursery water, has a tendency to accumulate not only in developing teeth causing discoloration, and in bones making them brittle. The mineral is associated with cancer and it also accumulates in the pineal gland, an important hormone control center, where it wreaks considerable havoc. Paul Connett of Fluoride Action Network comments on Jennifer Luke's research which was part of her PhD thesis and had just been published in Caries Research under the title: Fluoride Deposition in the Aged Human Pineal Gland.

Fluoride is a poison, yet we add it to our water and toothpaste and even call it a supplement, although it has no nutritional value. Its medicinal value - the prevention of tooth decay - is the official explanation for adding the toxic mineral to the water supply. But that value is far outweighed by its toxic side effects - amply documented by Paul Connett in his Statement of Concern.

Bookstore Owner Stages Book-Burning

Tom Wayne amassed thousands of books in a warehouse during the 10 years he has run his used book store, Prospero's Books.

His collection ranges from best sellers like Tom Clancy's "The Hunt for Red October" and Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities," to obscure titles like a bound report from the Fourth Pan-American Conference held in Buenos Aires in 1910. But wanting to thin out his collection, he found he couldn't even give away books to libraries or thrift shops, which said they were full.

So on Sunday, Wayne began burning his books to protest what he sees as society's diminishing support for the printed word.

"This is the funeral pyre for thought in America today," Wayne told spectators outside his bookstore as he lit the first batch of books.

The fire blazed for about 50 minutes before the Kansas City Fire Department put it out because Wayne didn't have a permit to burn them.

SANTIAGO, Chile - A rare, one-year-old white tiger named Pampa had a coming-out party Thursday at a Chilean zoo.

Weighing 265 pounds and measuring more than 10 feet from nose to tail, he was introduced to dozens of photographers and children by at Santiago's Metropolitan Zoo.

The blue-eyed Pampa was born in Argentina and will be mated with Luna, a two-year-old female from a Mexican zoo. Officials expect cubs as soon as December.

Maybe you didn’t know but WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, 40th attempt. Name was coined by the chemist, Norm Larsen, while he was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion by displacing water. Norm's persistence paid off when he perfected the formula on his 40th try.
