A California lawmaker has proposed slapping a tax on popular
soft drinks to help reduce rocketing rates of childhood obesity.
A number of U.S. states, including Arkansas, Virginia and
Washington, currently impose excise taxes on soft drinks. But
most use the proceeds to fight litter, not the "epidemic" of

overweight children in U.S. schools.

Bookstore Owner Stages Book-Burning

Tom Wayne amassed thousands of books in a warehouse during the 10 years he has run his used book store, Prospero's Books.

His collection ranges from best sellers like Tom Clancy's "The Hunt for Red October" and Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities," to obscure titles like a bound report from the Fourth Pan-American Conference held in Buenos Aires in 1910. But wanting to thin out his collection, he found he couldn't even give away books to libraries or thrift shops, which said they were full.

So on Sunday, Wayne began burning his books to protest what he sees as society's diminishing support for the printed word.

"This is the funeral pyre for thought in America today," Wayne told spectators outside his bookstore as he lit the first batch of books.

The fire blazed for about 50 minutes before the Kansas City Fire Department put it out because Wayne didn't have a permit to burn them.

SANTIAGO, Chile - A rare, one-year-old white tiger named Pampa had a coming-out party Thursday at a Chilean zoo.

Weighing 265 pounds and measuring more than 10 feet from nose to tail, he was introduced to dozens of photographers and children by at Santiago's Metropolitan Zoo.

The blue-eyed Pampa was born in Argentina and will be mated with Luna, a two-year-old female from a Mexican zoo. Officials expect cubs as soon as December.

Maybe you didn’t know but WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, 40th attempt. Name was coined by the chemist, Norm Larsen, while he was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion by displacing water. Norm's persistence paid off when he perfected the formula on his 40th try.

"I know in elementary school I wanted to be [in my brother's] class, but if someone has a dad who is all about independence and wants to split them up maybe that's not what the kids really want and they don't get a say in it," Nate said.

"Definitely through middle school and high school, I liked being away from him in classes. We have one or two classes together now, which isn't bad. But I don't want to be around him all day because when we go home I'm still around him."

The kids should have a say. Why is that not obvious to the adults?

• Since the 1860s, increased industrialization and shrinking forests have helped raise the atmosphere's CO2 level by almost 100 parts per million—and Northern Hemisphere temperatures have followed suit. Increases in temperatures and greenhouse gasses have been even sharper since the 1950s.

Water vapor is the most important greenhouse gas. Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide also contain heat and help keep Earth's temperate climate balanced in the cold void of space. Human activities, burning fossil fuels and clearing forests, have greatly increased concentrations by producing these gases faster than plants and oceans can soak them up. The gases linger in the atmosphere for years, meaning that even a complete halt in emissions would not immediately stop the warming trend they promote.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- For months, the city's most famous reptile eluded paparazzi and faithful fans who gathered at the edge of a park lake to catch a glimpse of the A-list alligator.

But when "Reggie" decided to come out, the gator did it in true Hollywood style: Swarmed by fans and photographers as it sunned by the water, the reptile was whisked away with a police escort as TV helicopters gave chase and broadcast live footage of the cagey critter's freeway journey to the zoo.

"We were petting him, talking to him," said City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, whose district includes the park. "I feel like I know him because I've invested a lot of time and energy in him."

The 6½-foot alligator believed to be Reggie, who lurked in Harbor Regional Park's Lake Machado for two years, was wrestled into captivity Thursday. The wily beast became a celebrity as it eluded would-be wranglers and managed to disappear for 18 months until it recently resurfaced.

My dad has long departed since then, but every time I read these words Lincoln wrote to his son's teacher, they bring a tear to my eyes. Beautiful and sincere advice for anyone to follow.

The world is now on track to experience more catastrophic damages from climate change than in the worst-case scenario forecast by international experts, scientists have warned.

The research, published in a prestigious US science journal, shows that between 2000 and 2004 the rate of increase in global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels was three times greater than in the 1990s.

That is faster than even the worst-case scenario modelled by the world's leading scientists in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, published over recent months, because the updated emissions figures were not available in time to be included.

The climbing emissions mean that average global temperatures are now on track to rise by more than four degrees this century - enough to thaw vast areas of arctic permafrost and leave about 3 billion people suffering from water shortages, including in Australia.

clipper's remarks: Just an fyi...in a few hours, we'll be uploading a fairly big set of changes to the clipmrks site aimed primarily at achieving two things.

The first is making the site easier and more intuitive to navigate (get anywhere from anywhere in less clicks).

The second is a much greater ability to learn about and connect with other clippers on the site. This will be a continuing driving force behind much of our development in June. The first stages will be introduced tonight.
