Woman Recycles Herself

Firefighters say a woman is lucky to be alive after becoming stuck in the slot of a recycling bin in Sittingbourne, Kent, UK.

She had apparently dropped off some clothes and then changed her mind and tried to get them back. But despite being slightly built, she became trapped in the slot with only her feet showing.

Another recycler spotted her plight and raised the alarm when he couldn't drag her back out.

Fireman Mark Innes said: "We were originally told it was a child stuck in the bin but when we got there, we discovered it was a fully grown woman. "Apparently she had put something in the bin that she hadn't meant to and when she went to retrieve it, she fell in. It was a very strange job." ::Daily Record via ::Splurch

Science Daily — A sheet of molten rock roughly 10 miles thick spreads underneath much of the American Southwest, some 250 miles below Tucson, Ariz. From the surface, you can't see it, smell it or feel it.

But Arizona geophysicists Daniel Toffelmier and James Tyburczy detected the molten layer with a comparatively new and overlooked technique for exploring the deep Earth that uses magnetic eruptions on the sun.

"We had two goals in this research," says Tyburczy. "We wanted to test a hypothesis about what happens to rock in Earth's mantle when it rises to a particular depth -- and we also wanted to test a computer modeling technique for studying the deep Earth."

He adds, "Finding that sheet of melt-rock tells us we we're on the right track."

Raytheon Ships ARTEMIS Sensor For On-Demand Surveillance From Space

The ARTEMIS sensor was developed for the Department of Defense's Tactical Satellite program.

A hyper-spectral imaging sensor developed by Raytheon to demonstrate and assess military applications from satellites launched on demand has been delivered to Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. The delivery marks the sensor's first leg of a journey into space scheduled in December aboard a vehicle known as TacSat-3.

The ARTEMIS (Advanced Responsive Tactically Effective Military Imaging Spectrometer) program called for Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems to design and build the sensor within 15 months as part of a rapid development experiment funded by a $15 million contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory.

The typical development cycle of such a program would be four to five years, according to Brian Arnold, vice president for Raytheon's Space Systems business.

Coca-Cola Co. Announces Plan to Offset the 76 Billion Gallons of Water it uses Annually

Coca-Cola Co. today dropped a sustainable bombshell announcing it is funding a $20 million project to try and offset the 76 billion gallons of water it uses each year to make Coke, Sprite, Fanta and its other drinks. Yes that is not a typo Coca-Cola uses 76 billion gallons of water annually.

According to a company press release Coca-Cola Co. will work to conserve seven major rivers worldwide and will also revamp its bottling practices to reduce pollution and water use.

The campaign was announced at the World Wildlife Foundation's (WWF) annual meeting in Beijing. Information on the announcement and apparent Coca-Cola/WWF partnership is prominently displayed on both parties web sites.

"Essentially the pledge is to return every, every drop we use back to nature," Coca-Cola Chief Executive E. Neville Isdell said at a news conference.

Climbers from Japan and Nepal picked up 500kg of tins, old tents, food and medicines littered on Mount Everest over decades by mountaineers, the climbers said on Monday.

Hundreds of climbers carrying tons of supplies try and climb the 8, 850 metre (29,035 feet) mountain every year, adding to the piles of trash on its slopes.

Japan's Ken Noguchi, who led the latest in a series of cleaning campaigns on Everest, said most of the garbage his team collected on tehn orthern side of the mountain in the past month had been handed over to authorities in Tibet.

"We have brought some of the garbage with us which will be displayed in Tokyo and Seoul to raise public awareness to keep the mountain clean", Noguchi told Reuters after returning to Japan from Nepal.

The history of nuclear weapon accidents is as old as their introduction
The US Department of Defence (DoD) first published a list of nuclear weapon accidents in 1968 which detailed 13 serious nuclear weapon accidents between 1950-1968. An updated list released in 1980 catalogued 32 accidents. At the same time, documents released by the Navy under the Freedom of Information Act cited 381 nuclear weapon incidents between 1965 and 1977.

A number of nuclear cases involve ships or submarines colliding at sea or, in some cases, submarine nuclear power units becoming unstable and the subs having to be abandoned. According to Greenpeace there have been more than 120 submarine accidents since 1956. The most recent incident, in August 2000, was the loss of the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk in the Barents Sea. The Kursk is the seventh nuclear submarine lost, five of them Russian, two American. There are 92 known cases of nuclear bombs lost at sea.

When Johann Vaaler patented his paper clip in 1901, therealready were similar designs on the books. William Middlebrook of Waterbury, Connecticut patented his design in 1899. Cornelius Brosnan of Springfield, Massachusetts patented his Konaclip in 1900.

So, who was first? Well, it is thought to be Johann Vaaler. Drawings of his design date to early 1899, but since Norway had no patent law at the time, he had to seek patent rights in Germany and the US in the following years.

Johann Vaaler was born on 15 March 1866 in Aurskog, Norway. Known as an innovator in his youth, he graduated in electronics, science and mathematics. He was employed by the owner of a invention office when he invented the paperclip in 1899.

Several designs followed the original. Only a few remain, such as the Ideal, Non-Skid, Owl and Gem.

The first double-oval clip, the Gem, was launched in early-1900 by Gem Manufacturing Ltd of England.
