LAHORE, Pakistan -- It was close to midnight last
Saturday when Gen. Pervez Musharraf finally
appeared on state-run television. That's when
police vans surrounded my house. I was warned not
to leave, and hours later I learned I would be
detained for 90 days.

The Musharraf government has declared martial law
to settle scores with lawyers and judges.
Hundreds of innocent Pakistanis have been rounded
up. Human rights activists, including women and
senior citizens, have been beaten by police.
Judges have been arrested and lawyers battered in
their offices and the streets.

THE MOST horrifying massacre of the Gujarat riots was the one at Naroda Gaon and Naroda Patiya localities in Ahmedabad. A local Bajrang Dal leader, Babu Bajrangi, was one of the main conspirators. He started planning the massacre soon after the news of the Sabarmati incident broke. Starting in the evening of February 27, firearms and inflammable material were collected; Bajrangi also formed a select team, drawn from the cadre of the VHP and the Bajrang Dal. Members of the Chhara community, a denotified criminal tribe, were also roped in. TEHELKA spoke to two of them, Suresh Richard and Prakash Rathod. Both believed, and were made to believe, that by killing Muslims they were doing a great service to Hinduism.

The dollar is plunging because America has been living beyond her means, borrowing $2 billion a day from foreign nations to maintain her standard of living and to sustain the American Imperium.

Other nations that have kept cash reserves in U.S. Treasury bonds and T-bills are watching the value of these assets sink. Not fools, they will begin, as many already have, to divest and diversify, taking in fewer dollars and more euros and yen. As more nations abandon the dollar, its decline will continue.

'Invisible hand' of Israel in Gaza

Israel controls life in Gaza with an "invisible hand", despite its "disengagement" from the area over a year ago, according to a report by an Israeli rights group.

"Israel has not relinquished control over Gaza but rather removed some elements of control while tightening other significant controls," according to Disengaged Occupiers: the Legal Status of Gaza, a report by Gisha, the Legal Centre for Freedom of Movement, a Tel Aviv-based rights group.

Instead Israel has "changed the way in which such control is effectuated", the report says.

This includes control over Gaza's air space and territorial waters, its borders, the movement of goods and people, the taxation system, fiscal policy and the population registry.

clipper's remarks: According to the BBC’s Galpin, reporting for BBC Radio 4 (19/9/05, 18 hrs news script), Iraqi police sources in Basra “told the BBC the two British men were arrested after failing to stop at a checkpoint. There was an exchange of gunfire. The men were wearing traditional Arab clothing, and when the police eventually stopped them, they said they found explosives and weapons in their car… It’s widely believed the two British servicemen were operating undercover.” Undercover? Dressed as Arabs? What were they trying to do that had caught the attention of their colleagues, the Iraqi police?

According to the Washington Post (20/9/05) [2], “Iraqi security officials on Monday variously accused the two Britons they detained of shooting at Iraqi forces or trying to plant explosives.” Reuters (19/9/05) [3] cited police, local officials and other witnesses who confirmed that “the two undercover soldiers were arrested after opening fire on Iraqi police who approached them.” Officials said that “the men were wearing traditional Arab headscarves and sitting in an unmarked car.” According to Mohammed al-Abadi, an official in the Basra governorate, “A policeman approached them and then one of these guys fired at him. Then the police managed to capture them.”

At a time when Europe was emerging from the Middle Ages, African historians were chronicling the rise and fall of Saharan and Sudanese kings, replete with great battles and invasions. Astronomers charted the movement of the stars, physicians provided instructions on nutrition and the therapeutic properties of desert plants, and ethicists debated such issues as polygamy and the smoking of tobacco. Says Tal Tamari, a historian at the National Center for Scientific Research in Paris, who recently visited Timbuktu: "[These discoveries are] going to revolutionize what one thinks about West Africa."
