Athletes get green light to compete overseas

BUKIT JALIL: It’s the green light for our athletes looking to compete overseas.

In spite of the threat of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said that athletes were free to travel – as long as they are aware of the risks.

“We will give them the choice. If they are not willing to take the risk, we will respect their decision.

“But at the moment, the ministry is still sending out athletes,” he told reporters after attending the Cheer 2009 national cheerleading competition here yesterday.

“The decision was made after consulting the Ministry of Health.

“They warned that should our athletes travel overseas, there will certainly be risks.”

The minister also commented on business tycoon Ananda Krishnan’s reported bid for English football club Newcastle United.

He called it a “business decision” and hailed the move.

“We should be proud if it really happens that a Malaysian is involved in such a huge transaction.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- The "wife" of a man charged with committing robberies caused a major stir in the Sessions Court here today when "she" turned out to be a he.

This prompted him to ask the "woman", who was dressed in a brown saree and matching blouse if they were indeed married, to which "she" just smiled and nodded her head Rajandren told the judge they had a traditional marriage but had yet to register the marriage with the authorities because his sex status had not been changed with the National Registration Department (NRD).

SELEPAS sebuah universiti tempatan mendakwa bola Marathon Gen II mampu menghadirkan risiko besar buat penggunanya, tiba giliran Institut Sains Sukan (ISN) untuk berkongsi pendapat yang hampir serupa.

Inilah yang ditegaskan oleh Presiden Persatuan Sepaktakraw Malaysia (PSM), Datuk Ahmad Ismail sebelum ini.

Kajian universiti tempatan terbabit diserahkan PSM kepada ISN pada 28 Januari lalu bagi mendapatkan pandangan institut berkenaan kerana badan induk kebangsaan itu berpendapat ia adalah penting.

ISN dalam satu kenyataan dikeluarkan semalam berkata, berdasarkan kajian universiti terbabit, memang terdapat beberapa keraguan terhadap faktor keselamatan bola berkenaan.

“Kajian itu mendapati bola terbabit berupaya menghasilkan kesan yang lebih berbanding bola biasa kerana ia lebih padat dan universiti berkenaan berpendapat ia mampu menghadirkan risiko kecederaan terutama bahagian kepala pemain.

PETALING JAYA: The cost of living, social issues, the crime rate and illegal immigrants - these are the issues that matter most to Malaysian voters, according to a survey conducted ahead of the general election.

The survey revealed that 96% of respondents were concerned with the current economic situation such as the rising cost of consumer goods, while 88% said they were worried about the incidents of crime in the country.
