TAKING it easy ... the bum-breathing Irwin's turtle can save energy by just hanging around on the bottom

SCIENTISTS are trying to figure out why some turtles benefit from breathing through their bottoms and are investigating their diet and lifestyle.

The so-called bum breathers can breathe by absorbing air from water taken in through their cloaca.

James Cook University physiologist Suzy Munns and ecologist Ivan Lawler are investigating the turtles, in particular the Irwin's turtle.

It was found by Bob Irwin and later named after his late Crocodile Hunter son Steve. It is known only in north Queensland's Broken-Bowen River and the lower Burdekin.

"We believe that one of the major benefits of cloacal breathing is the amount of energy spent on having to surface is reduced significantly simply because they can obtain their oxygen from the surrounding water and so don't have to surface to breathe," Dr Munns said.

How to harvest solar power? Beam it down from space!

The satellites would electromagnetically beam gigawatts of solar energy back to ground-based receivers, where it would then be converted to electricity and transferred to power grids. And because in high Earth orbit, satellites are unaffected by the earth's shadow virtually 365 days a year, the floating power plants could provide round-the-clock clean, renewable electricity.

NASA and the United States Department of Energy studied the concept throughout the 1970s, concluding that although the technology was feasible, the price of putting it all together and sending it to outer space was not.

"We could see the first operational power satellite in about the 2020 time frame if we act now," he said.

The club's toilets are made of old oil barrels. The door handles are re-used bike handlebars. Even the ventilation pipes were salvaged from a demolished office building. The club's walls are made of recycled real estate signs. Van Gaasbeek refers the materials used to build Worm as "upcycled, because it's having a better life. It was in a dull office building, and now it's in a cool club."

Michel's goal: to open a Rotterdam club that uses every energy-saving resource available, including the clubgoers themselves. "Certain materials produce electricity when squeezed. So a dance floor can become one big generator. We've called it "harvest your energy." With the electricity-generating dance floor, we're trying to use that power that you've got to power the lights."

Their program would save and store captured solar energy in molten salt, the new solar plant will produce up to 500 megawatts of peak power — comparable to what a regular coal power plant can produce, only with no greenhouse gas emissions.

Unlike other solar power plants, SolarReserve’s will be able to produce electricity at night or in inclement weather.

The mystery of what causes the Northern Lights, one of Nature's most spectacular displays, to shimmer so brightly has been solved.

New data from a fleet of Nasa satellites shows the lights - also known as the aurora borealis - are formed when solar particles are whisked along temporary "magnetic ropes" linking the Sun to the Earth at astonishing spin what is called a substorm.

The geomagnetic storm powering the auroras raced 400 miles in a minute across the sky

The energy released is the equivalent of a magnitude 5.5 earthquake, scientists say

The satellites monitored their first display in March.

"The substorm behaved quite unexpectedly," said Dr Vassilis Angelopoulos, of the University of California at Los Angeles.

Radio Frequencies Help Burn Salt Water

ERIE, Pa. - An Erie cancer researcher has found a way to burn salt water, a novel invention that is being touted by one chemist as the "most remarkable" water science discovery in a century.

The discovery has scientists excited by the prospect of using salt water, the most abundant resource on earth, as a fuel.

The radio frequencies act to weaken the bonds between the elements that make up salt water, releasing the hydrogen, Roy said. Once ignited, the hydrogen will burn as long as it is exposed to the frequencies, he said.

The discovery is "the most remarkable in water science in 100 years," Roy said.

The scientists want to find out whether the energy output from the burning hydrogen — which reached a heat of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit — would be enough to power a car or other heavy machinery.

"We will get our ideas together and check this out and see where it leads," Roy said. "The potential is huge."
