Summerlicious 2008 couldn't have launched with any more pomp and style than it did today in Toronto. Using a massive industrial crane to hoist up and suspend a 5-tonne, 22-person table over a red-carpeted Yonge-Dundas Square, the American Express sponsored harrowing-stunt-meets-gourmet-cuisine Dinner in the Sky event most certainly created summer food festival buzz.

Watch What You Drink At Pride

The Rockstar energy drink is ubiquitous throughout bars and corner stores in Toronto, but consumers may not be aware that the Las Vegas-based company was founded by Russell Weiner, the son of virulent anti-gay radio talk show host Michael Savage. Savage (né Weiner) has called same-sex parenting "child abuse," frequently calls gays "sodomites," and famously told one caller to "get AIDS and die." On gay rights, Savage asked his listeners to "think only one thing: someone who wants to rape your son."

For the consumer avoiding the caffeine and high fructose corn syrup of Rockstar energy drinks, Bolthouse Farms may be a popular all-natural choice. The company was founded by William Bolthouse, who most recently donated $100,000 to the National Organization for Marriage California, which aims to overturn the California Supreme Court decision that allows same-sex marriage.

A gaggle of border collies have become Toronto's most rambunctious beach sanitation engineers

The dogs regularly traverse 161 kilometres of waterfront, from the Pickering border to the edge of Mississauga, on poop patrol, scaring geese away in the interests of preserving water quality.

The average goose produces a kilogram of feces daily, which washes into the lake, boosting phosphorus levels.

Brampton and Oakville have also used dogs to relocate geese. Guy emphasizes the dogs don't chase the geese, but herd them as their ancestors did sheep.

"They're not running at them and they're not barking at them. They're moving them, they're relocating them, to sewage treatment plants and unoccupied green space," she said.

On Monday, Marnina Norys, a Toronto resident and PhD student studying Social Political Thought, was put through the bureaucratic and culture-of-fear rigmarole while trying to board a place in Kelowna - all because she wore a necklace with a pendant in the shape of a gun (the classic Colt45, and the actual pendant depicted in the above photo).

First she was told by an agent at security that she couldn't wear it, and that the "replica" would have to go in her carry-on bag. But a second agent who was tasked with searching her carry-on bag found the gun pendant and told her that although harmless (and against all common sense) her gun would have to go in her checked baggage.

Racing back to the check-in desk, concerned that she was going to miss her flight, Norys ended up just checking her whole carry-on bag (since her checked luggage was already long gone).

20 odd things about Toronto

Toronto's parks were a mid-Victorian innovation. Before that there were cemeteries, the only green spaces where inner city families could find a peaceful place to have a picnic.

Toronto's first non-denominational cemetery, known as the Potter's Field, is underneath Yorkville. Some 6,700 people were buried north and west of Yonge and Bloor Sts. until the cemetery closed in 1855. It's a good guess that under the office towers along Bloor and the boutiques and restaurants on Cumberland Ave. plenty of settlers still rest peacefully.

The island became an island in 1853 when a violent storm created the Eastern Gap. More storms and landfill created other islands.

In the 1850s you didn't take the kids to the Island for a good time. It was home to a rough crowd who frequented the seedy bars, brothels and gambling joints. Toronto's first racetrack ran between Ward's and Centre Islands.

How Bush's grandfather helped Hitler's rise to power

George Bush's grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany.

His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.

The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator's action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

Putting the 'great' in Great Lakes

Like buffalo blanketing the prairies, giant sturgeon once filled the Great Lakes.

They were one of the world's largest freshwater fish, growing to a whopping 130-plus kilograms – like toothless ocean sharks – and living for up to 200 years.

Lickley's film, just opened at the Ontario Science Centre, traces the efforts of one biologist to save them from the brink of extinction. It shows Wisconsin scientist Ron Bruch, along with a galvanized local community, helping mature females to spawn, most spectacularly a female thought to be born in 1885 and still productive.

The lakes are great. The sturgeon are giant. The photography is beyond spectacular. And the world's largest film format still uses cameras weighing 30 kilograms, as huge and unwieldy as when the medium was introduced nearly 40 years ago.

Lawrence of A-rack-ia

"someone has installed a new type of bike post along Yonge north of Lawrence,"

Inspired by a similar project in which psychiatric survivors designed bike stands for the curb in front of the Parkdale Activity and Recreation Centre (PARC), the Yonge Lawrence Village BIA commissioned two of the artists behind that project, Phil Sarazen and Jack Gibney, to fashion sixteen pieces, each featuring "a different aspect of community living." Studded into each block on both sides of Yonge Street north from Lawrence to Yonge Boulevard, they succeed in being everything that Astral's street furniture is not and should serve as an inspiration to all neighbourhoods and BIAs as to what is possible when you're willing to invest in your community rather than sell it out.

In typical last minute style, I made a trip out to Home Depot to pick up a few things needed to put the final touches on the outdoor summer gazebo my brother and I built for my mother this morning (Happy Mother's Day!). I was pleasantly surprised to find that Toronto Hydro was there, giving away free clotheslines as part of their energy-saving promotion (a timely promotion that comes on the heels of a province-wide lifting of all municipal clothesline bans). I filled out the short survey, chatted briefly about CF light bulb recycling with the rep, and was on my way, free clothesline in hand.
