What makes this man so interesting? Why do people around the world care about a simple Buddhist monk who heads an unrecognized government-in-exile and an unrecognized nation of 6 million Tibetans? Maybe because he is also a diplomat, a Nobel laureate, an apostle of nonviolence, an advocate of universal responsibility and a living icon of what he calls “our common human religion of kindness.”

As Robert A.F. Thurman wrote: “In this climate of manifold desperations, the Dalai Lama emerges from another civilization, from a higher altitude, as a living example of calm in emergency, patient endurance in agony, humorous intelligence in confusion and dauntless optimism in the face of imminent doom. Through his teachings and writings, he serves and inspires Buddhists worldwide, as well as followers of other faiths.” And here are ten of his timeless lessons:

1. Dalai Lama said: “Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.”
Why he is right: People who consistently perform at a higher level have certain things in common. They are committed to their success, have passion for what they do, have clear goals and are uniformly more comfortable taking risks than most. Their ability to take intelligent risks is an important ingredient in their success and a huge determinant in anybody’s level of achievement. I don’t know what rewards you will enjoy by your willingness to take thoughtful risks, but I know for sure that those rewards will not occur unless you are willing to take those risks. And wouldn’t it be a shame to forgo some wonderful, if unknown, rewards just because you just can’t seem to find your way out of your comfort zone?

• Why FYROM should not be named "Macedonia"

FYROM's residents have no historical cultural or linguistic ties with ancient Macedonia.

The heart of ancient Macedonia was not in the teritory which FYROM occupies but in the Greek part of Macedonia were all the major archaeological discoveries took place.

The name "Republic of Macedonia implies a teritorial threat against Greece and other countries and it creates a great risk of renewed ethnic conflict in the Balkans.

The area of FYROM was never called "Macedonia" before the 2nd World War. This name was given to the Southern Yugoslavian providence by General Tito aiming to create conflicts in the region and to obtain Greek and Bulgarian teritories. Before the 2nd World War FYROM was called Vardarska.

FYROM's population is a mixture of many different ethnic groups. Only 60% of them are "Macedonians". There is also a large minority of Albanians (30%) and smaller groups of Serbs Turks, Greeks and others.

Ancient Macedonia and its civilization was part of the ancient Greek civilization.

Some suggestions for FYROM's permanent name:

The name this region used since the 2nd world war - Vardarska
The ancient name of the region - Paionia
A name which describes the country geographicaly - Central Balkan Republic

Daar is tie dan: versie 3.0

Hotzaflotz. Nog net voor mijn vakantie. Versie 3.0 van martinnoordzij.nl, release candidate. Dat wil zeggen: nog niet helemaal klaar maar goed genoeg om live te zetten. Maar dan in internettaal ;-). Aangezien ik toch niet kan wachten om heel de wereld versie 3.0 te laten zien, gooi ik em gewoon live. Er zitten heel veel slimmigheidjes in. De template staat helemaal los van de inhoud, ik werk op een aantal plekken met dynamische i-frames, er zijn diverse flash elementen in de website opgenomen en er is een podcast en vodcast beschikbaar! Natuurlijk zijn er een aantal dingen nog niet op orde. Zo is de uitlijning van de 3 kolommen nog niet perfect. Werken de menu's naar de statische onderdelen nog niet en moet ik de bannertjes naar mijn nieuwsbrief en chat nog plaatsen. Maar dat mag de pret niet drukken. De mijne in iedergeval niet. Ik ben benieuwd naar jullie reactie. Geef effe een comment!
