Shooter Sent Package to NBC

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Between his first and second bursts of gunfire, the Virginia Tech gunman mailed a package to NBC News containing images of him brandishing weapons and video of him delivering a diatribe about getting even with rich people.

NBC said that a time stamp on the package indicated the material was mailed in the two-hour window between the first burst of gunfire in a high-rise dormitory and the second fusillade, at a classroom building. Thirty-three people died in the rampage, including the gunman, 23-year-old student Cho Seung-Hui, who committed suicide.

Bush gets moles removed

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two moles President Bush had removed from his face Friday were benign, White House spokesman Alex Conant said Saturday.

Dermatologist Steve Krivda from Walter Reed Army Medical Center/ National Naval Medical Center and Bush's regular doctor, Richard Tubb, removed the moles from Bush's left temple using a local anesthetic, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

Bush has a 1-inch scab on his left temple that is expected to heal in a week to 10 days, but he does not have a bandage, Stanzel said.

He said Bush noticed one mole and had Tubb examine it Monday. Tubb then noticed the second mole and suggested they both be removed. Tests indicated they were not cancerous, according to the White House.

Bush had lesions removed from his face in December 2001 and December 2004. His most recent physical was in August 2006, the White House said.

US scientists have found that regular players of shoot-em-ups, such as Half-Life and Medal of Honour, have much better visual skills than most of the population.

The researchers have shown that gamers were particularly good at spotting details in busy, confusing scenes and could cope with more distractions than average.

The two scientists also found that with a little game playing the visual skills of anyone can be improved.

Sight skills

Researchers Shawn Green and Daphne Bavelier pitted keen players of computer games against people who never play in a series of psychological tests that measure basic visual skills.

The tests demanded that subjects match shapes appearing in a series of circles with ones displayed at the side of the screen.

Although video game playing may seem to be rather mindless, it is capable of radically altering visual attentional processing

Keen players were vastly better at this task, and completed it much faster, especially when the test was made more difficult by the circles being filled with distracting shapes.

Gamers also showed their skill in another experiment that measured "attentional blink" which captures how easy it is to catch someone's attention.

The test asks subjects to identify a symbol flashed up very soon after the appearance of a first one.

The second symbol appeared between two-tenths and half a second after the first symbol.

Gamers managed to correctly identify the second symbol correctly far faster than non-players.

"Video game playing enhances the capacity of visual attention and its spatial distribution," wrote the researchers in a paper published in the journal Nature this week.

(CBS) Gift cards used to be a panicky, last-minute present, but they've become the perfect gift. They're never the wrong size or the wrong color, CBS News correspondent Anthony Mason reports.

"It's so small. I don't have to wrap it," says a woman at an Apple store.

"Gift cards are the phenomena of the time-pressed consumer. And when you're running out of time, it's a very convenient out," says Pat Conroy with Deloitte & Touche.

Gift card sales are expected to jump more than 30 percent this holiday season, to a record $25 billion. Two out of every three shoppers are expected to give somebody a gift card. And this year, for the first time ever, gift cards are expected to outsell toys and games, music and movies, even jewelry.

Chris Bachmann says he picked up a gift card at Starbucks for his future father-in-law.

"If he drinks a good cup of coffee, he'll be on my good side in the morning, you know," he says, laughing.

But be careful. Some cards come with expiration dates or service fees.

"For the individual merchants you buy from, the local restaurant, the chain store, they usually don't expire," says Tod Marks of Consumer Reports. "It's the big-name, credit card-issued cards that have strings attached."

Many of us even forget to use them. Best Buy reported a $43 million revenue gain this year from gift cards that hadn't been redeemed. Still, one survey found that gift cards are the thing women ask for most.

"I do like getting gift cards," Pat Demetrio says. "I'm ashamed to say that." She's "ashamed" because her mother used to have a rule that "the tackiest thing in the world would be to give anything resembling money."

But some gift cards don't even look like gift cards anymore. They can laugh like Elmo, light up like a Nintendo game or like a Star Wars light saber — so you're not giving someone an impersonal piece of plastic.

"You give them the gift of shopping," one shopper explains.

And we know how much Americans love to shop.

Ear Infection Symptoms

Symptoms

Symptoms of acute otitis media usually develop suddenly and can include:

Pain or discomfort in the ear. (It is difficult to determine if a preverbal child or infant has an ear infection. Some children may indicate pain if they have trouble swallowing food and rejecting it. Some parents believe that tugging on the ear indicates an infection, but this gesture is more likely to indicate pain from teething.)
Coughing.
Nasal congestion.
Fever.
Irritability.
Sleeplessness.
Loss of appetite.
Vomiting.
Pus in the ear may cause hearing loss in some children.
If the ear infection is severe, the tympanic membrane may rupture causing the parent to notice pus draining from the ear. (This usually brings relief from pain.)

Fevers and colds often make children irritable and fussy, so it is difficult to determine if acute otitis media is present as well. In about a third of children with acute middle ear infection, symptoms are not apparent.

Symptoms of Otitis Media with Effusion

Otitis media with effusion (OME) often has no symptoms at all. Some hearing loss may occur, but it is often fluctuating and hard to detect even by observant parents. The only signal to a parent that the condition exists may be when a child complains of "plugged up" hearing. Other symptoms can include not responding to verbal commands, talking louder, and turning up the television or radio.

Older children with OME may have difficulty targeting specific sounds in a noisy room. (In such cases, some parents or teachers may attribute their behavior to lack of attention or even to an attention deficit disorder.) OME is often diagnosed, however, only during a regular pediatric visit.

Wash your hands frequently. This is often your best defense. Wash the entire hand using warm water and soap. Don't forget to clean under fingernails. Wash for about 10 seconds.
Avoid putting your hands near your eyes, nose or mouth, unless you have washed. Most bacteria and germs are spread from a surface to your hands to your face. Few germs are transmitted through the air.
Clean your 'shared spaces' more often than other times of the year. Remember phones, keyboards, steering wheels, office equipment and other items used by several people during the day.
Get a flu shot. Flu shots are especially beneficial for those with wekened immune systems, the elderly or those who come in contact with a lot of people. Check with Health Services for more information.
Get enough sleep. During sleep, your body's immune system goes into high gear to protect you from illness. Lack of sleep can reduce immune functioning making you susceptible to sickness.
Drink more water. In the fall and winter, it is easy to overlook your thirst and get dehydrated. Make sure you consume 8 glasses a day.
Continue a moderate exercise program. Try to maintain a 3-4 day a week exercise routine. Consistency is key.
Eat healthily. A good rule is to eat 10-15 calories per pound of "desired body weight." If your ideal weight is 170 lbs, then consume 1700-2550 calories a day (1700 for sedentary individuals and 2550 for extremely active types.)
Limit alcohol intake. Alcohol can be dehydrating which, in turn, may decrease your resistence to bacteria.
Finally, listen to your body. If you are less than 100% you will feel better and recover faster if you let yourself rest.
