'Superbug' NHS chief seeks bigger pay-off

The former boss of the hospital trust at the centre of Britain's worst superbug outbreak has begun a legal claim for a bigger pay-off, it has emerged.

But Ms Gibb has lodged papers at the High Court rejecting the sum and claiming tens of thousands of pounds extra. She refused to disclose how much she was seeking but denied a report that she wanted her full £250,000 severance package.

She left her job by mutual consent last October after a report by the Healthcare Commission stated that poor hygiene standards directly caused 90 deaths from C diff and contributed to a further 241 over a two-year period. More than 1,100 people were infected in what was described as Britain's worst outbreak.

It found that a shortage of nurses meant wards and washing facilities were filthy.

Tony Charlton, 63, of Mayfield, East Sussex, whose mother-in-law Florrie Field, 86, was among the victims, said: "I'm astounded. How can she do this after all the misery?

clipper's remarks: If the government intrudes to this degree in the family life, then I say that the now impotent parent should have the right to just dump the child onto the government and let them raise them.

I was whipped as a child and while I certainly did not like it, I know it did no damage to me and quite likely helped me not do even dumber things than I did do!

Yes my home was bad, but not because of whippings. It was bad because my father was abused very badly as a child (basically hated and treated as a slave) and no law could make my family into something it was not able to be.
My mother had her own issues and was perhaps the worst person my father could have married.

And what alternatives were there? Would I have been better off bundled elsewhere by the state?

I wouldn't want to bet on it!

Good parents bad parents, they must have the right to be parents unless they are causing willful permanent physical injury!

Couple who smack their daughter as 'last resort' cannot be foster parents

A couple have been prevented from fostering children after insisting on the right to smack their own daughter "as a last resort".

David and Heather Bowen told an adoption panel that they would never smack a foster child but might physically chastise their own daughter "once or twice a year".

He added: "Our birth daughter is only chastised physically as a last resort amongst a whole range of other forms of behaviour management strategies which include rewards and sanctions. The council has made us feel we are bad parents and yet we do nothing that hundreds of thousands across the UK do as loving and responsible mothers and fathers."

It called for leniency, recommending light sentences for parents who are prosecuted for smacking but did not intend to hurt their child.

Causing a bruise, reddened skin or psychological injuries can result in an assault charge and five years’ jail.

Child maths prodigy 'working as a prostitute'

A child prodigy who was one of the youngest students to be admitted to Oxford University is now working as a prostitute in Manchester, it has been claimed.

Sufiah Yusof was just 13 years old when she was admitted to the prestigious university to study mathematics.

But 10 years on, Miss Yusof now earns £130 an hour working as a prostitute from her flat in Salford, Manchester, according to the News of the World.

The newspaper claims it sent an undercover reporter to the 23-year-old's home, where Miss Yusof, who allegedly works under the name Shilpa Lee, described the services she reportedly offered.

The gifted student sparked a massive police hunt in 2001 when, at the age of 15, she ran away from Oxford after passing her end-of-term examinations at St Hilda's College.

At the time she sent her family an e-mail, accusing her father of making her life "a living hell" and of putting her through "15 years of physical and emotional abuse".

Bear Stearns chairman sells stake

The chairman of beleaguered US investment bank, Bear Stearns, has sold his entire stake in the firm as a takeover by JP Morgan Chase looms.

James Cayne received $61m (£31m) for his holding which at one stage was worth close to $1bn.

News of Mr Cayne's move - revealed after Thursday trading - pushed Bear's share price down by about 5%.

Personally I do suspect hidden political purposes and propaganda lie behind much of the trash.

Merely getting a name mentioned in order facilitate certain unconscious associations for example may be the real reason the rest of the meaningless time waste is introduced for example!

The new threat to withhold compensation follows a public outcry last year when Post Office bosses were accused of "blackmail" after they told postmasters they would lose thousands of pounds if they did not stick to an officially approved script on closures.

They were told undercover staff would be sent around the country to check that they were saying the right things to customers asking about closures. The plan was hastily withdrawn after details were leaked.

More than a thousand village shops are facing the threat of closure over "draconian rules" that will ban them from offering rival postal services after their own Post Office sections are shut down.

About half of the 2,500 post offices earmarked for closure double as local shops. Most want to carry on in business after the nationwide closure programme is complete.

In many rural areas they are the only stores for miles around.

Obama's Black Support Shows Its Limits

CHICAGO (AP) — Barack Obama would not be leading the Democratic presidential race without the enthusiasm and high turnout of black voters.

They spearheaded his comeback win in South Carolina, where Obama trounced Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Edwards with the backing of four out of every five black voters. They provided his margin of victory in many other states, and will play a key role in Tuesday's primary in Mississippi, where Clinton is the underdog.

But Obama's campaign saw the limits of black support in last week's losses in Ohio and Texas, which kept Clinton's campaign alive. And the role black voters will play in the next big contest, Pennsylvania's April 22 primary, is unclear.

Moreover, some analysts think it's possible Obama's heavy black support is nudging some working-class white Democrats into Clinton's camp. If true, it could be an important factor in a contest that remains remarkably tight after a year of campaigning.
