Thank you for your interest in One Laptop Per Child. Our mission is to provide a means for learning, self-expression and exploration to the nearly two billion children of the developing world with little or no access to education. While children are by nature eager for knowledge, many countries have insufficient resources to devote to education—sometimes less than $20 a year per child. Imagine the potential that could be unlocked by giving every child in the world the tools they need to learn, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter how little they may have.

Once again, thank you. We sincerely hope you'll join our growing community of people working to create a connected, educated, enlightened future for the world's most essential resource—its children.

Tags: laptop, love, aide, charity, care, social responsibility, technology, information, education

<clipSource>http://www.xogiving.org/</clipSource>

Social Lending: The Big Idea

clipped by: wwjimd

Clip Source: www.zopa.com

Social Lending is a smarter, fairer and more human way of doing money. It's like borrowing and lending with your friends and family - except there are thousands of people you can lend and borrow with.

Both lenders and borrowers get better rates, because Social Lending is more efficient than the traditional banking model. Banks have massive overheads, with thousands of employees to pay and hundreds of branches to maintain. So they have to take large margins on the money that passes through them.

An online marketplace where people meet to lend and borrow has huge cost advantages – which is why Zopa members get a fairer deal when it comes to their money.

Zopa was the world's first lending and borrowing marketplace. By demonstrating that Social Lending works on a large scale, Zopa has changed the financial sector for good.

In Zopa's wake, copycats – such as Prosper in the US, Smava in Germany and Boober in the Netherlands – have sprung up across the world.

do to help:

Avoid distractions.

Work in long stretches.

Use succinct languages. More
 powerful programming languages
 make programs shorter.

Keep rewriting your program. Rewriting a program often yields
 a cleaner design.

Write rereadable code.

Don't have multiple people editing the same piece of code. You
never understand other people's code as well as your own.

Start small. A program gets easier to hold in your head as you
become familiar with it. You can start to treat parts as black
boxes once you feel confident you've fully explored them.

It's striking how often programmers manage to hit all eight points
by accident.

Tags: programing, meta, social engineering, effecincy, logic flow, steps, reasoning

<clipSource>http://www.paulgraham.com/head.html</clipSource>

Nissan to unleash Pivo 2 concept at Tokyo

clipped by: wwjimd

Clip Source: www.hybridcarnews.org

Nissan has unveiled the second installment for the Pivo vehicle it displayed in Tokyo in the year 2005. The new Pivo 2 runs on compact Lithium ion batteries and is without a reverse gear. Anyways, what is the need of a reverse gear in a vehicle whose cabin is capable of rotating 360 degrees!

Video after the jump!

Each of the four wheels is powered by Nissan’s in-wheel batteries and each wheel is capable of turning through 90 degrees. With a cabin that can rotate 360degrees and wheels that can turn 90 degrees, Pivo2 can be driven in any conceivable direction on the road.

The concept is a one-seater but you will never be alone in this vehicle; an interactive robotic agent will keep you company on the roads and provide an interface for basic vehicle communications as well as parking assistance.

Tags: innovation, electric car, japan, japanese car, robot, ai, artificial intelligence

<clipSource>http://www.hybridcarnews.org/entry/nissan-to-unleash-pivo-2-concept-at-tokyo/</clipSource>

One-Person Car Fuelled by Two AA Batteries

clipped by: wwjimd

Clip Source: en.epochtimes.com

Looking for a way to avoid those rising gas prices? How about a car that runs on AA batteries?
Panasonic’s dry battery car was on display at the Toronto Congress Centre Wednesday as part of its 2005 Consumer Electronics Show. The one-seater, 40-pound car, uses two Panasonic Oxyride dry AA batteries.

The car, just shy of 3 metres in length, can carry a 47-kilogram driver for a distance of over a kilometre with the batteries. Panasonic was promoting the batteries, which were eight years in the making and go for about the same price as typical Nickel-Zinc batteries.

The show included everything from microwaves to massage chairs, home theatre systems and DVD recorders, as well as Panasonic’s plasma television, which according to Panasonic, still holds the largest market share among plasma televisions in Canada.

Two Panasonic Oxyride dry AA batteries fuel a Panasonic dry battery car.
