The paper has been published in the Astrophysical Journal (Gott et al., 2005, ApJ, 624, 463), and you can also find the manuscript here (note: Figure 8. of the manuscript has been published as an inset poster, and has to be downloaded separately (see below)).

Holding a Program in One's Head

A good programmer working intensively on his own code can hold it in his mind

You hold the whole program in your head, and you can manipulate it at will.

Even the best programmers don't always have the whole program they're working on loaded into their heads. But there are things you can do to help:

Avoid distractions.

Work in long stretches.

Use succinct languages. More powerful programming languages make programs shorter.

Keep rewriting your program. Rewriting a program often yields a cleaner design.

Write rereadable code.

Don't have multiple people editing the same piece of code. You never understand other people's code as well as your own.

Start small. A program gets easier to hold in your head as you become familiar with it. You can start to treat parts as black boxes once you feel confident you've fully explored them.

It's striking how often programmers manage to hit all eight points by accident.

Nissan to unleash Pivo 2 concept at Tokyo

Nissan has unveiled the second installment for the Pivo vehicle it displayed in Tokyo in the year 2005. The new Pivo 2 runs on compact Lithium ion batteries and is without a reverse gear. Anyways, what is the need of a reverse gear in a vehicle whose cabin is capable of rotating 360 degrees!

Each of the four wheels is powered by Nissan’s in-wheel batteries and each wheel is capable of turning through 90 degrees. With a cabin that can rotate 360degrees and wheels that can turn 90 degrees, Pivo2 can be driven in any conceivable direction on the road.

The concept is a one-seater but you will never be alone in this vehicle; an interactive robotic agent will keep you company on the roads and provide an interface for basic vehicle communications as well as parking assistance.

One-Person Car Fuelled by Two AA Batteries

Looking for a way to avoid those rising gas prices? How about a car that runs on AA batteries?

Panasonic’s dry battery car was on display at the Toronto Congress Centre Wednesday as part of its 2005 Consumer Electronics Show. The one-seater, 40-pound car, uses two Panasonic Oxyride dry AA batteries.

The car, just shy of 3 metres in length, can carry a 47-kilogram driver for a distance of over a kilometre with the batteries. Panasonic was promoting the batteries, which were eight years in the making and go for about the same price as typical Nickel-Zinc batteries.

The show included everything from microwaves to massage chairs, home theatre systems and DVD recorders, as well as Panasonic’s plasma television, which according to Panasonic, still holds the largest market share among plasma televisions in Canada.

Two Panasonic Oxyride dry AA batteries fuel a Panasonic dry battery car. Using the Oxyride batteries, the car is able to propel a 47-kilogram driver 1,230 meters
