Knit a Poem

The Poetry Society rolled out its giant centenary poem at the British Library, London, on 7 October. Revealed in its full glory, the eye-popping, 13 x 9 metre, hand-knitted version of Dylan Thomas’s ‘In my Craft or Sullen Art’ (which can be read in full below) stopped passers-by in their tracks and quickly drew an admiring crowd. This included knitters and crocheters who had helped to make the piece (and for whom it was the first opportunity to see it fully assembled), as well as the national press.

The poem is the work of more than one thousand knitters and crocheters worldwide, who furiously clicked needles and hooks throughout September, to turn the individual letters of Thomas’s poem into colourful 12-inch squares.

Kindle comes to Australia

Australians will finally be able to buy a Kindle – Amazon.com’s electronic ink display that wirelessly downloads and displays books, magazines, newspapers and personal documents – on October 19.

It’s available for pre-order from www.amazon.com/kindle for US$279 (about $314).

The press release says “readers living in or travelling to Kindle’s 3G wireless coverage areas can wirelessly shop at the Kindle Store, download books in less than 60 seconds, automatically receive newspaper and magazine subscriptions, and receive personal documents – all without a PC, Wi-Fi hot spot, or syncing.”

The 22 year-old fears deportation to Kenya, where she will be genitally mutilated, while a bill that could prevent that fate awaits parliamentary debate.

The Mungiki sect that killed her mother for refusing to have her clitoris cut off has threatened her life for the same reason, Ms Gichuhi said yesterday.

As it stands, Ms Gichuhi does not meet refugee criteria. However, she and a fellow Kenyan, Teresia Ndikaru Muturi, could be protected under legislation introduced to Parliament.

Called complementary protection, the changes would expand rigid criteria that require a refugee's fear of persecution to be based on ''race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion''.

This means people facing genital mutilation or torture for other reasons can miss out.

The Holy Grail of the Unconscious

This is a story about a nearly 100-year-old book, bound in red leather, which has spent the last quarter century secreted away in a bank vault in Switzerland. The book is big and heavy and its spine is etched with gold letters that say “Liber Novus,” which is Latin for “New Book.” Its pages are made from thick cream-colored parchment and filled with paintings of otherworldly creatures and handwritten dialogues with gods and devils. If you didn’t know the book’s vintage, you might confuse it for a lost medieval tome.

So for the better part of the past century, despite the fact that it is thought to be the pivotal work of one of the era’s great thinkers, the book has existed mostly just as a rumor, cosseted behind the skeins of its own legend — revered and puzzled over only from a great distance.

Dennis Haskell spells out his literary goals

His appointment strengthens WA's representation on the seven-member literature board: Perth-born Gail Jones and Fay Zwicky, who went from Melbourne to Perth to work at UWA many years ago, are also on it.

The Literature Board's primary role is to grant funds directly to writers as well as to organisations such as publishers, literary magazines and writers centres, which make up the infrastructure of the literary world.

Haskell describes three aspects of the task of fostering literature: "The creation of literature, getting it published and marketing it, which includes writers festivals and encouragements to readers."

The board's five members are now Haskell, Jones, Zwicky, John Romeril and Margo Lanagan. Last month, according to an Australia Council spokesperson, the federal Arts Minister received recommendations for filling two vacancies, one of which opened when Nicholas Jose recently left to take up the chair of Australian studies at Harvard.

Poetry confronts the Taliban in Pakistan

People in a Pakistani frontier region threatened by the Taliban are trying to preserve a culture rich in poetry and dance from religious extremism.

The culture of the ethnic Pashtun peoples often delights in worldly pleasures - like sex and alcohol - considered un-Islamic by religious conservatives.

Khan celebrated such pleasures as "my beloved, my youth, and a cup of wine".

He also offers a more immediate answer to any preaching about rewards in paradise:

Give the promises of eternal bliss to the Mullah after my death;
Could dreams of nymphs in the afterlife ever satisfy the poor?
Give me here just one nymph, smart, exalted and mesmerizing;
O God, if you do not do this, then keep your heavenly bounties;
I need them neither here nor in the afterlife.

In the course of this exercise I spent a bit of time at the home pages of the respective magazines, and it gave me an idea: each mag has a 'current issue' page listing all contributors, and it was reasonable to expect that other magazines would as well. So here are some numbers I gathered, as at last night, from the 'current issue' pages of Australian magazines -- monthly, quarterly, bi-annual -- that are partly or wholly literary in content.

The numbers show the ratio MEN:WOMEN. I offer them in a spirit of scientific curiosity, without comment.

Stolen inflatable clown found with list of demands

Police in Alice Springs say an inflatable clown recently stolen from the Moscow Circus has been found.

She says a handwritten note found with the clown demanding better working conditions has been seized by police for forensic testing.

Can Birth Control Hormones Be Filtered from the Water Supply?

Trace elements of prescription drugs have been found in city water supplies

It is true that trace amounts of birth control and other medications—as well as household and industrial chemicals of every stripe—are present in many urban and suburban water supplies around the country, but there is considerable debate about whether their levels are high enough to warrant concern.

In 2008 the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) tested water in nine states across the country and found that 85 man-made chemicals, including some medications, were commonly slipping through municipal treatment systems and ending up in our tap water. Another report by the Associated Press found trace amounts of dozens of pharmaceuticals in the drinking water supplies of some 46 million Americans.
