The Art of Sand Mandalas

The Sand Mandala is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition which symbolizes the transitory nature of things. As part of Buddhist canon, all things material are seen as transitory. A sand mandala is an example of this, being that once it has been built and its accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished, it is systematically destroyed.

Historically, the mandala was not created with natural, dyed sand, but granules of crushed colored stone. In modern times, plain white stones are ground down and dyed with opaque inks to achieve the same effect. Before laying down the sand, the monks assigned to the project will draw the geometric measurements associated with the mandala.

The sand granules are then applied using small tubes, funnels, and scrapers, until the desired pattern over-top is achieved.

The 36 Views of Mount Fuji is a series of woodblock prints created between 1826 and 1833 by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. Popular in the West, it’s one of the most well known Japanese art works due the widespread pop-culture reproduction of The Great Wave of Kanagawa (the first picture in the series) into posters, t-shirts and postcards.

clipper's remarks: The MacGuffin (the term was popularized by Hitchcock) is the vaguely-defined object that all the characters in a thriller are trying to get -- you know, the mysterious briefcase, or the cache of jewels, or whatever. Adapted by Slavoj Zizek into his Lacanian theory of jouissance (the "objet petit a" is the MacGuffin). The first word of the day was "interpellation."

A MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin) is a plot device that motivates the characters or advances the story, but the details of which are of little or no importance otherwise.

The element that distinguishes a MacGuffin from other types of plot devices is that it is not important what the object specifically is. Anything that serves as a motivation will do. The MacGuffin might even be ambiguous. Its importance is accepted by the story's characters, but it does not actually have any effect on the story. It can be generic or left open to interpretation.

The MacGuffin is common in films, especially thrillers. Commonly, though not always, the MacGuffin is the central focus of the film in the first act, and later declines in importance as the struggles and motivations of characters play out. Sometimes the MacGuffin is all but forgotten by the end of the film.

Modern egg master Franc Grom creates eggs which give Ferberge a run for his money. Grom uses a small electric drill to create approximately 2,500 to 3,500 holes in each eggshell. Inspired by traditional Slovenian designs, he has been known to pierce a shell as many as 17,000 times. They’re so fragile and beautiful. Imagine the patience!

Learning Light Painting

1. The tools

Besides your camera you will need a tripod and a torch

2. Light

I use a little light also used as a key chain. It s powerful enough to draw the characters and can be turned on/off just by pressing a button.

3. Camera settings

Shutter speed: As long as you need to create the scene.

ISO: I usually put it on 100 so I can set the shutter speed on a very slow value and I don t get any noise on my photographs.

Aperture: Set it doing a test shot without drawings, focusing on an element close to what you are going to draw.

Flash: Can be used to fix a person or a moving element in the scene.

White balance: Set it doing a test shot. Street lighting is usually yellow.

Focus: Obviously on manual if there is not enough light.

4. Tips

Light is your friend, you could use moving lights from cars etc.. for exemple, I did one while a train was passing under a bridge.

Wear dark clothes if you want to lower the chance of being visible on the photograph.

Are you ready? May Challenge, let’s go!

As you know, this challenge has us shooting a new object each week of May. This week is the first week in May, and right now I’m announcing the first object.

beverage

It’s that easy. Select a beverage and shoot it for the next 3 days. If you have speed-lights or strobes, set up a studio and get creative. Get out and shoot it as many different ways as possible. Below I’ve selected a sample beverage, coffee.

Now, let me make it clearer. You need to stick to the same object. So, the samples are geared to get your imagination going. But, what I’m looking for is a constant use of the same object. That doesn’t mean that you have to shoot the same cup of coffee. Just stick with the same identifiable object.

Don’t forget to tag all your submissions correctly; “photochallenge”, “maychallenge, “maychallenge2008″.
