Have you ever found yourself confused in the supermarket? Do you want to buy the right foods for yourself and your family? Fed up wading through the small print on the back of food packaging?

You’re not alone. We’re strongly in favour of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) ‘traffic light’ colours on the front of their labels. The traffic light front-of-pack nutrition label uses red, amber and green to indicate whether fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt levels are high, medium or low.

Asda, The Co-operative Group, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, M&S, McCain, New Covent Garden Food Co, Budgens/Londis, Avondale, Moy Park, Bombay Halwa, Brittania and S&B Herba have already agreed to use the FSA system.

A red light on the front of the pack means the food is high in something we should be trying to cut down on. It's fine to have these occasionally, or as a treat, but try to keep an eye on how often you choose these foods, or try eating them in smaller amounts.

If you receive an email or letter offering you a large sum of money to help transfer millions of dollars from abroad, it's probably a version of the 419 scam.

The 419 scam (named after the relevant part of the Nigerian penal code) has been around for well over 10 years.

Police say that although these scams are associated with Nigeria, they are often also carried out from other African nations, and from European cities with a large Nigerian population, notably London and Amsterdam.

This scam often revolves around some major event or misfortune, such as the overthrow of a government, which, it is claimed, has resulted in large sums of money being held in a foreign country.

The person who contacts you claims to need help in transferring the cash to another country. A proportion of the money is offered for help in arranging the transfer.

Mobile snap nails dog sex man

A Washington state man faces prosecution for bestiality under a new animal cruelty law after his wife discovered him having sex with the family's pit bull terrier, kirotv.com reports.

According to the Pierce County sheriff's office report, Michael Patrick McPhail, 26, of Spanaway, Pierce County, was caught red-handed last Wednesday night "having intercourse with their four-year-old female pit bull terrier" on the couple's back porch. The dog was "squealing and crying", charging papers note.

The unnamed wife quickly "took photos with her cell phone and called the sheriff's office". McPhail was duly hauled before the local Superior Court last Thursday where he pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree animal cruelty. He posted $20,000 bail, and is set to appear before the court on 11 December.

Watson added that the dog was "taken by animal control". ®

Wear red to win: psychologists

WASHINGTON (AFP) - If three German psychologists have it right, the crimson-clad Chinese team has all the advantage in the Olympics: they found that sports referees have a distinct bias for competitors in red uniforms.

In research on referees of tae kwon do matches, Norbert Hagemann, Bernd Strauss and Jan Leibing of the University of Munster found evidence that the color of a uniform can affect the split-second decisions a referee has to make, and lead to possible bias in scoring.

The three tested referees on videos of tae kwon do matches which pitted one competitor in red against another in blue.

And then the psychologists showed the referees a second set of matches -- in fact the same matches, but with the colors of the competitors digitally reversed.

They discovered that overall red-clad competitors earned an average 13 percent more points that those in blue -- even though each athlete appeared in both red and blue at different times.

Olympic Fireworks Faked For TV

Parts of the spectacular Beijing Olympics opening ceremony were faked, it has emerged.

The global television audience of more than three billion people watched in amazement as a series of giant footprints outlined in fireworks proceeded through the night sky from Tiananmen Square to the Bird's Nest stadium - except they were watching a computer animation.

Even the giant television screens within the stadium itself broadcast the fake images.

Stunned viewers thought they were watching the string of fireworks filmed from above by a helicopter.

But in reality they were watching a 3D graphics sequence that took almost a year to produce.

It even included a 'camera shake' to mimic the effect of filming from a helicopter.

The dupe was revealed by China's Beijing Times. Speaking to the paper, the man responsible for the animation said he was pleased with the result.

"But most of the audience thought it was filmed live - so that was mission accomplished."

In a shipyard in New Orleans, survivors of one disaster are building a monument to another

Bringing together America’s two great calamities of the 21st century, the USS New York is being built in New Orleans with 24 tonnes of steel taken from the collapsed World Trade Centre.

There is no shortage of scrap metal in New Orleans these days, but the girders taken from Ground Zero have been treated with a reverence usually accorded to religious relics. After a brief ceremony in 2003, about seven tonnes of steel were melted down and poured into a cast to make the bow section of the ship’s hull.

Some shipworkers say the hairs stood up on the backs of their necks the first time they touched it. Others have postponed their retirement so they can be part of the project.

38 dead after being bitten by vampire bats

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- At least 38 Warao Indians have died in remote villages in Venezuela, and medical experts suspect an outbreak of rabies spread by bites from vampire bats.

Laboratory investigations have yet to confirm the cause, but the symptoms point to rabies, according to two researchers from the University of California at Berkeley and other medical experts.

The two UC Berkeley researchers -- the husband-and-wife team of anthropologist Charles Briggs and public health specialist Dr. Clara Mantini-Briggs -- said the symptoms include fever, body pains, tingling in the feet followed by progressive paralysis, and an extreme fear of water. Victims tend to have convulsions and grow rigid before death.

Dr. Charles Rupprecht, chief of the rabies program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, agreed with their preliminary diagnosis.

Amazing picture of whale taught to blow bubble rings

Like children blowing little bubbles through rings, beluga whales are astounding onlookers by learning to blow bubbles of air underwater.

The whales have delighted thousands of visitors since being taught the impressive trick by scuba divers in a pool.

They are given a breath from the diver's regulator to give them enough air to blow the big bubbles.

Following a clap from their instructor they exhale the air, about 30cm (12in) wide, towards a glass wall. They also sometimes direct the bubble right at members of the audience standing by the glass. The three belugas form a group as the diver blows air out of his regulator for them to draw into their lungs.

The act also includes juggling balls, twisting around and swimming through hoops at the Aquas aquarium in Hamada, 700km (434 miles) south-west of Tokyo.
