Title should be decided in playoff, says Chelsea's Grant

LONDON, May 9 (Reuters) - The Premier League should be decided in a playoff in future if teams finish level on points at the top, Chelsea manager Avram Grant said on Friday.

Chelsea go into the final weekend of the season level on 84 points with leaders Manchester United but they will lose the title race on goal difference if both clubs record a similar result on Sunday. United's tally is 17 goals better.

Grant, whose team face Bolton Wanderers while United visit Wigan Athletic, said: "I prefer the system in Italy. If you have the same points you play a playoff and it is decided on that.

"Of course, I have interest now to say that, but I like it anyway. Sometimes, you score more goals against the weakest teams. If you have the same points, you are at the same level so you need to play to see who is the better," he told reporters.

Concern over rent-a-dog service

Animal welfare organisations expressed concern about a rent-a-dog service introduced in Britain which allows busy people to own part-time pets.

Flexpetz is an American concept enabling dog lovers craving canine companionship to borrow a pet at a cost of £279 for once a week for a month.

Gucci, an 18-month-old Pomeranian, has been the first canine recruit to Flexpetz's London operation but more are expected to be available in the future.

Massive eggs marks the spot

Square meal: The fried eggs take up Wilhelmina Square in Leeuwarden, in the northern Dutch state of Friesland and are proving a big attraction for visitors

Talk about out of the frying pan... when controversial Dutch artist Henk Hofstra does public art he really goes for it – in fact you could say he really has the eggs factor.

His extraordinary – or should that be eggs-ordinary – series of giant fried eggs has been unveiled in Leeuwarden in Holland.

Hofstra's new work, apparently inspired by his breakfast, is appropriately called Art Eggcident, and features eggs most of which are more than 30m wide.

Man operates on his own throat with steak knife

A man who was suffering breathing difficulties took medical matters into his own hands in a rather extreme way – by performing a tracheotomy on himself with a steak knife.

Steve Wilder, of Omaha, Nebraska, woke in the night struggling to breathe. Fearing that he was about to die, and not believing that an ambulance would reach him in time, he took the obvious course of action – he went to the kitchen and picked up a steak knife.

He used the knife to cut a hole in his throat, allowing air into his lungs.

Wilde has previously suffered from throat cancer, which caused breathing problems when his air passages became so swollen that they wouldn't let air through. Wilder says he thinks the same thing happened this time.

Doctors say that they expect Wilder to make a full recovery from his throat-cutting experiment, and that once the wound heals he shouldn't suffer any adverse effects.

Man loses 35,000 dollars in 'marinaded money' scam

OSLO, May 10, 2008 (AFP) - A Vietnamese man in Norway lost around 35,000 dollars after he was led to believe that mixing the cash with a special liquid would double its value, Norwegian media reported Saturday.

A 32-year-old Frenchman is set to stand trial in a lower court near Oslo next week on charges that he cheated a gullible Vietnamese man out of 180,000 kroner (35,00 dollars, 23,000 euros) earlier this year, local daily Romerikes Blad (RB) reported on its website.

The victim of the con, who was not identified, was reportedly told by the Frenchman to leave a mixture of real cash with blank bills to marinate in a special liquid overnight, and the next morning he would have double the amount of cash at his disposal.

But when he showed up the next morning to collect his prize, both the cash and the suspected con-artist, whose name was not revealed, had disappeared.
