But Westerners are more accustomed to names that describe the ingredients and how they are cooked -- such as pot roast.

The government realizes local names are a matter of taste, but don't want them to get lost in translation.

Hence, the spicy Sichuanese dish "Bean curd made by a pock-marked woman" has been bestowed the more palatable "Mapo tofu."

Tags: china, chinese, food, olympics, cuisine

<clipSource>http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/06/19/olympic.dishes/index.html</clipSource>

Obama says bin Laden must not be a martyr

clipped by: wiccantexan

Clip Source: abcnews.go.com

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Wednesday he would bring Osama bin Laden to justice in a way that wouldn't allow the terrorist mastermind to become a martyr, but he may be killed if the U.S. government finds him.

On the day before West Virginia's primary election, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama called for passage of the new GI bill Monday in Charleston, while taking a jab at U.S. Sen. John McCain - his likely opponent in the fall presidential election - for refusing to support it.

The proposed 21st Century GI Bill would allow soldiers to receive free tuition for college. Obama said it is one of a number of upgrades to GI benefits and healthcare the federal government should provide.

"It would provide every returning veteran with a real chance to afford a college education, and it would not harm retention,"

The Illinois Democrat said McCain, whom he added he greatly respects as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, doesn't like the new plan.

"He is one of the few senators of either party who oppose this bill because he thinks it's too generous," Obama said. "I couldn't disagree more.

Tags: politics, obama, military, education, mccain, government

<clipSource>http://www.wvgazette.com/News/200805120364?page=1&build=cache</clipSource>

Teachers’ private postings may make waves in school

clipped by: wiccantexan

Clip Source: www.firstamendmentcenter.org

Free expression is an essential guarantee of the First Amendment — the

He criticized cases in which a Caucasian student might be denied a college slot in favor of a black student with a lower grade-point average.

Tags: race, government, affirmative action, education, school

<clipSource>http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/03/07/affirmative.action/index.html?iref=mpstoryview</clipSource>

Court Rejects ACLU Challenge To Wiretaps

clipped by: wiccantexan

Clip Source: ap.google.com

The Supreme Court rejected a challenge Tuesday to the Bush administration's domestic spying program.

The justices' decision, issued without comment, is the latest setback to legal efforts to force disclosure of details of the warrantless wiretapping that began after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The American Civil Liberties Union wanted the court to allow a lawsuit by the group and individuals over the wiretapping program. condemnation lawsuits to frightened landowners, Brownsville resident Eloisa Tamez,
72, has one simple question. She would like to know why her land is being targeted
for destruction by a border wall, while a nearby golf course and resort remain
untouched.

Tamez, a nursing director at the University of Texas at Brownsville, is one of
the last of the Spanish land grant heirs in Cameron County. Her ancestors once
owned 12,000 acres. In the 1930s, the federal government took more than half of
her inherited land, without paying a cent, to build flood levees.

Now Homeland Security wants to put an 18-foot steel and concrete wall through
what remains.

While the border wall will go through her backyard and effectively destroy her
home, it will stop at the edge of the River Bend Resort and golf course,

Tags: texas, mexico, border, homeland security, politics, wealth, rights, home, government

<clipSource>http://www.texasobserver.org/article.php?aid=2688</clipSource>
