We hoped that we didn't have to hide our ambition or pretend that our goals were effortlessly achieved ("I never really set out to be in public affairs, much less to run for this office," the Governor has said.) We hoped that we could be mothers without having our motherhood be our defining characteristic, as it seems to be for Palin. We hoped that we did not have to be perfect beauty queens to get to where we wanted to be in life, that our looks, good or bad, wouldn't matter. Whether or not you think it's appropriate to comment on Palin's appearance, the fact of her attractiveness exists, and is being used to her advantage by Republican sloganeers ("the hottest Governor in the coldest state," et. al).

she has always embodied that perfectly pleasing female archetype

Tags: women, politics, feminism, gender, culture

<clipSource>http://jezebel.com/5045934/why-sarah-palin-incites-near+violent-rage-in-normally-reasonable-women</clipSource>

McCain Team: Voters Don't Care if Palin Knows the Issues

clipped by: Wisco
clipper's remarks: There you go.
Jay Carney from TIME weighs in:

According to Nicole Wallace of the McCain campaign, the American people don’t care whether Sarah Palin can answer specific questions about foreign and domestic policy. According to Wallace the American people will learn all they need to know (and all they deserve to know) from Palin’s scripted speeches and choreographed appearances on the campaign trail and in campaign ads.

That’s right folks. A McCain spokesperson actually said that the spin coming from their campaign is all we need to know about Palin.

Is that some kind of endearing quality? Is that some kind of characteristic we want in our leadership? I just don't get it. Pit bulls are notorious for attacking innocent bystanders (often children) with fierce vengeance - that's certainly their stigma at least. So why in the world is it something that a potential President of the United States would be proud of comparing herself to? Personally, i find it very scary that she would say that and i honestly find it scary that a room full of people would stand up and cheer the idea.

Clip Source: www.slate.com

A Pit Bull With Lipstick

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/egoldstein/512/7EEBC5ED-664A-449E-A9DE-FE17C37B55BF.jpg" alt="Sarah Palin. I get no pleasure from imagining her in the spotlight on national and foreign policy issues about which she has zero background, with one month to learn to compete with Sen. Joe Biden's 37 years' experience. When asked last month about the vice presidency, she said, "I still can't answer that question until someone answers for me: What is it exactly that the VP does every day?" When asked about Iraq, she said, "I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."

Clip Source: www.latimes.com

Here's the good news: Women have become so politically powerful that even the anti-feminist right wing -- the folks with a headlock on the Republican Party -- are trying to appease the gender gap with a first-ever female vice president. We owe this to women -- and to many men too -- who have picketed, gone on hunger strikes or confronted violence at the polls so women can vote.

But here is even better news: It won't work. Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a new pie.

To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, "Somebody stole my shoes, so I'll amputate my legs."

<clipSource>http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-steinem4-2008sep04,0,7541303.story?track=ntothtml</clipSource>

What the Non-Elite Wear

clipped by: Wisco
clipper's remarks: You know, I think I'm wearing about fifty bucks worth of clothes right now. (see new story that we just posted on this topic).

Clip Source: texasdarlin.wordpress.com

*Breaking* Photo Documents Barry Soetoro: Indonesian Citizen, Muslim Religion [Updated x 2]

We just received this photo of a school registration form, courtesy of reader “curious,” taken by Tatan Syuflana, an Indonesian AP reporter and photographer. <DEL datetime="00">To my knowledge, the AP has not written a story about this</DEL>. [revision: There was an AP story story in Jan. 2007, but it did not include this photo]. The photo has become relevant now in the context of other revelations reported on this blog. Here is the AP folder where Syuflana’s photo was found: www.daylife.com.

“This registration document, made available on Jan. 24, 2007, by the Fransiskus Assisi school in Jakarta, Indonesia, shows the registration of Barack Obama under the name Barry Soetoro into the Catholic school made by his step-father, Lolo Soetoro. The document lists Barry Soetoro as a Indonesian citizen, born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, and shows his Muslim step-father listed the boy’s religion as Islam.

<clipSource>http://texasdarlin.wordpress.com/2008/08/13/breaking-photo-documents-barry-soetoro-indonesian/</clipSource>

Palin's speech

clipped by: lp97702
clipper's remarks: This is what I'm seeing all over the internet. I think she really turned off independent women. Even my 2 low-information type friends tuned in to the "Who wants to be a VP" show, out of human interest. All said they thought she was caustic. They thought it seemed like she really hated Obama as a person. Every single one of them was turned off, in their own words, without any prompting from me.

Tags: palin

<clipSource>http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/09/todays-polls-94.html#comment-2454321319480227594</clipSource>
